The Anglo Saxons and Vikings and Danes were at odds from the 8th thru 11th centuries with periodic Norse invasions of Britain and various intertribal raids and conquests in between. Ultimately the Norman descendants of the Vikings and Danes under William I defeated the last Anglo Saxon king Harold and took the crown of England in 1066. Bernard Cornwell's series of books about Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Bamburgh) is set during the years when Alfred the great and his successors from Wessex fought the Norsemen successfully to establish the kingdom of England. The Vikings also raided and settled from Ireland in the west to Russia in the east. I'm sure they'd be metal fans!

The Anglo-Saxon poem 'The Battle Of Maldon' is an account of a battle between Anglo-Saxons and Vikings and is virtually unique in that its written by the losing side. The classic part for me is that responding to taunts of cowardice from the Vikings (that the Anglo-Saxons position meant they could easily repulse their attacks), the Anglo-Saxons allowed the battle to take place 'on a level battlefield'. With predictable results.....

Amon Amarth's "Saxons and Vikings" is indeed a barn-burner of a song. Would be fascinating if they did a version of the song in Old Norse and Old English. As far as I can tell, Johan Hegg sings with a variety of growls and a more melodic clean vocal technique. While not frequently used in his vocal arsenal, I think Hegg can also sing falsetto and scream. King Edmund's remains are believed to have once been at Bury St Edmunds, but they disappeared following the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Therefore, their current location is unknown.

Amon Amarth is my favorite metal band period, and it's really the only band with no clean singing I listen to. Johann's voice is so unique and rich and different while to me everybody else sounds the same while growling. Then they have the best riffs, the best melodies and the best choruses. It's super cool that they have this genius expedient of playing the vocal line with a guitar in tremolo which strengthens the voice's melodic output, delivering a catchy chorus while using growl/scream! And then they know to write a fucking song from beginning to end! Zero self indulgence, just commitment of crafting basically a pop tune in melodeath style. The quality is all there.

I'm not a historian, but I always thought the saxons were German, then they rambled on down to Normandy, and eventually invaded southern England, and then slowly started having sexy times with the Angles (the people not the mathematical shapes) who had also invaded England, and all my sexy Gaelic ancestors said "fuck this, all these Anglo-Saxons weirdos eat strange food and their taste in lute music is terrible so let's head to Scotland and Ireland where we can fondle sheep and wench's freely and drink copious amounts of mead", Everything went well for the Anglo-Saxons until one day a bunch of medieval bikers arrived in big canoes on lindisfarne and said "hey monks, catch my axe with your faces, and we're gonna be talking all your golden religious stuff, and the wine we'll be having that too", Then some Anglo-Saxon king and his army gave the vikings a series of roundhouse kicks and they pissed off home to Scandinavia for a bit. But then they came back and gave a few roundhouse kicks of their own to monasteries the length and breath of both Ireland and England, they also had sexy times with everyone, sheep, monks, wench's, goats and various other types of livestock, true story look it up. I got a bit bored of the song it reminded me too much of history class in school, right down to the needless shouting, now if either Biff or the other dude was to have shouted "Johnson! Wake up and pay attention" then it would have been exactly like school. It even had a whiff of corned beef sandwiches and pencil shavings.

Yay for sunglasses! Just like Eldridge.

Instead of just wearing sunglasses, be known for throwing your sunglasses to a lucky fan at the end of the show. Enjoyed your reaction to this!

Pro tip: do not eat blueberries while watching Justin attempt to growl (no offense, I can't growl either) but I almost choked to death. Also the enthusiasm Justin displays while listening to Amon Amarth is just heart warming. This is how everyone should dance listening to them 😂👏

On the lead break is there a bit of tremelo warble à la Jeff Beck? Great solo! Biff is a legend.

Got to see them open for Ghost in Indianapolis last August. It was awesome. I did not know what to expect, was not disappointed.

Bands like Amon Amarth or Sabaton are great not just because they're all insanely talented, but because they don't take themselves too seriously. Hence, the guy in a polo shirt participating in a medieval battle.

The best and most fun reaction video I've ever seen, no matter the song or the band. I absolutely love Amon Amarth, but I also love The Darkness, even though they are quite different.

Went to a machine head gig and amon amarth were supporting. I already liked amon amarth anyway but they completely blew machine head away, they were by far the better band and could've easily been the main band. 🤘

One thing that immediately jumps in my eyes in this video is thath it's in large part not as dark as the cliché metal video with such a song would be...
