Norris I think here suffered from previous success. You just expect more of him that him being best of the rest in a race doesn’t end up with as high a rating, even though that was outperforming the car most of the time. Does seem odd Perez was so high but he didn’t do much wrong other than not matching Verstappen, which isn’t an unreasonable thing of any driver these days.

Norris should have been so much higher. Consistently finishing 6th-8th pretty much every race, best of the rest and the only midfield driver with a podium. If any other driver had the season Norris did in a sub par Mclaren we'd be hyping it up to no extent.

@@tijgertjekonijnwordopgegeten I'd have put Norris third and probably close to Leclerc. Hamilton was very poor at the start of the season and got beat on points by his teammate. Russell was involved in too many crashes and Lewis had the beating of him basically from Canada onwards when he stopped running experimental floors. Alonso was unlucky with reliability but I'd still say Lando had a better year than him. Ocon wasn't far off Fernando and was beating him on merit a fair few times, Alpine was way better than the Mclaren.

I actually think hamilton is too low. When i actually look at the data I couldnt find a single race where you can clearly say russel beat ham on race pace in clean air. Hamilton was almost always a tenth or two faster all year on race pace largely due to having the lowest tyre deg in f1 most of the year (thanks in large part to the merc but still). Ham also had significantly more overtakes, less racing incidents that he could have done anything about. The only area russel was ever clearly beating ham in was quali early on in the year. And while russel remained more competitive in quali than race pace ham beating Mr saturday 13-9 overall certainly isnt terrible esp with the setup stuff. Really was just bad luck that caused ham to get stuck in drs trains in tracks where almost no one could overtake in drs trains let alone in the early merc with pathetic straight-line speed.
@ryansth16
@ryansth16 Жыл бұрын
Jeddah hamilton beat russel in p1 p2 p3 had a miffed quali setup in 1 session and had better race pace than russel as well when he was in clean air. If the late safety car didnt block the pit entry ham would have finished right behind russel despire being so far behind in the grid and unlucky with the earlier safety car. Singapore ham had incredible pace much faster than sainz just had one incident that punished him. The other tracks you mention nobody was going to be overtaking in that merc on those tracks in drs trains which is why it's generally bad luck being stuck and not anything else. Imola ocons unsafe release in the pits probably cost ham at least 4 places. In monaco ocon got a penalty for holding up hamilton and giving him damage in a critical stage. If you actually try to isolate driver performance, while russel had a really great year hamilton was clearly better almost all year long especially once the porpoising settled down a little

@@ryansth16 Hamilton and Russell have very similar driving styles: analytical and efficient. They are both equally talented imo. The advantage with Hamilton is his years of experience. So for Russell to come in his first year at Mercedes and beat Hamilton is quite impressive unlike sainz beating similarly aged leclerc in his first year which was certainly down to bad luck.

I'm a new fan to F1, but I've been really casually following many of the drivers for a few years now getting slowly more interested. This season, Alonso was such an outrageously fierce and skillful competitor, despite his many DNFs, huge crashes, etc, that my opinion of him went from me thinking something like, "Fernando Alonso is a former all time great, but he's coming down towards the end of his career and talking off," to thinking, "Fernando Alonso is an all time great, and he's still battling anyone around him on a level that simply says give him half the car he needs and he push for a title with a real chance at making it happen." He's just an unstoppable competitor. He's incredible in the literal sense of the word.

For me Mick should have been at least higher than ricciardo. You talked about Bahrein he finished 11th or 12th i think after got spun in the first round by ocon. Before Silverstone he could have scored easy points in canada but the engine said no and often haas was just giving him a bad strategie like in japan when everyone was on inters and he still had to drive on full wets. About the Crashes you were talking about Katy. There were just 2 in saudi and monaco. After that he didn't crashed his car. So I don't really get your point yes it wasn't the best season. But in the end he consitently was faster than kevin and outperformed him in the race by 13-8.

100% this. And the two crashes he had was so unlucky. Monaco crash was because he dipped his rear in the wet and off he went. Saudi crash he went over the curb a bit too much and spun. Alonso almost did the exact same thing a few laps later but had to quickly readjust his car or he would of done the same. There is a reason why the drivers are saying Mick is a really good driver and rating him highly and the fact that he is still only 23, of course he wont be the next Verstappen but he has a high ceiling and Mercedes sees that

I think Leclerc will eventually clean up the mistakes and the reason for this “massive” gap in poise and consistency between him and verstappen is all down to experience. Yes they’re the same age but when Verstappen won his first F1 race, Leclerc was still in Formula 3. Verstappen has loads more experience with facing the pressure of fighting for race wins and fighting for a championship. Give Leclerc a couple more years of fighting for race wins and I could see him being as good if not better than max.

I will, maybe, sound like a broken record BUT there's a few people that i wouldn't have put quite the same place. I'll start from the bottom. How did gasly end up 2 place up magnussen when we barely even heard of him the whole year ? So i'll put Mag p13, gasly p14 & zhou p15 I know everyone like vettel but Bottas had a better season overhaul so i thinks the standing matter here Bot p 10 & vet p11 Sergio had the most deficit to teamate of anyone but williams maybe. Norris p6 Sainz p7 Perez p8 I've heard your argument that fernando is hard to judge from having problem at 75% of the race but even so, that's generous to put him up there with the mercedes bois. Alonso p5 George should be higher than hamilton on result alone but too many avoidable incident with other drivers. At the end of the day, even if we consider this, i thinks they had the same season(hamilton had a few incident himself), that should be a tie for third. Hamilton & russel p3 So yeah, hope it was understandable. If not, honestly i don't care. Have a good one o/

Its a decent list, but I think you have also fallen into the same trap that WTF1 always seem to, of giving the drivers in the best cars the best grades. In terms of pure driver performance how can you say that Perez or Sainz actually outperformed Albon or Magnussen (or Vettel), really? Its just that when you have a great car and have a good weekend you can win the race, but if you have an average weekend you are still on the podium - whereas eg Albon could drive the best race of his career and still finish 12th in that Williams.

Gents, if I may offer a solution to one part of your dilema, provide an end of year grade based on contribution as a whole to the team for the year. This way, there is an added score which can contribute for consistently providing quality points, or not. Also may account for performance versus expectations. Maybe next year?

I don’t think making excuses for Charles is really a valid thing. I’m a Max fan and he would crash a lot in the past because he didn’t know the limits of his car and pushed them too far. You saw much less of that in 2021. As a driver, he just became more experienced. This is Charles’ first real chance at a title, and there’s a lot of pressure that also affects how well he may feel in the car. I don’t think the season says much about him as a driver, other than him just needing a bit more experience running at the top of the field. I think given more time and more opportunities in a championship winning car he could have a solid chance at winning.

Which Season do you think was better, Alonso 2018 or Norris 2022? For us spaniards is a no brainer cause when he wasn't retiring the car, which was almost half of the races, he was scoring points and finishing like 7th or 8th most of the time, finished at 11th in the championship with 50 points, while Vandoorne ended up with 12 points, at number 16, with 3 retirements to Alonso's 8. All of this with like the 6th or 7th best car at the very best. But it seems you brits have Lando in a very high steem, no spaniard would put Lando top 3 on the year i feel like, but a lot of you do, even 2nd. Here in Spain we usually put him between 4th and 6th, as the 2nd or 3rd best brittish driver, often behind Alonso. For a while you all turned into Alonso fanboys, wich was quite funny, i thought we were the only ones bold enough to suggest Alonso being 3rd or 4th ahead of Russell. But i have to say, as a spaniard, hearing you talk about the 3rd best car as if it was the worst thing ever is just pure comedy. The fact that this was the worst car Hamilton ever had in F1 is just ridiculous, he is the luckiest driver ever

He should be at least P13 and Russel is so underrated. He got in a new team against a 7 time champ regarded as on of the best and he was so much quicker at the start and had race win and a pole. He even beat Hamilton on points. He should get the respect he deserved this season and should be third.
