The car isnot just sidepods. Merc is much worse ballanced than Ferrari, those little vents means worse cooling the engine and less grip from the carosery. It can be dissterous with too much grip from the floor (purposing). Easy man.

It's wild that somewhere out there, there exists an absolutely perfect way to put the car together under the regulations. There could have been, and likely was, some crazy aero configuration that would have put Williams at the front of the grid last year, but they just never found it. That's the true beauty of this sport, intense engineering can sometimes be outdone by blind luck in the way the air ends up flowing over the car, which lead Williams to grab a surprise podium because their setup was accidentally better than the others in extreme wet conditions during qualifying.

Good to mention that the tams generally do certain speed tests while the air rakes are on the car (I forget which team and driver, but I think it was Hulkenberg at Renault who showed that it's 5-6 stages, going from low speed up to 160km/h I think), none of what I just said is certain, but I do believe that there is a video that helps explain the procedures they use.

Yes, I like it how teams use something relatively old school and manual that you can see to develop their cars. But I always worry, with F1's emphasis on safety, that screwing some temporary garbage to the car is never good for following drivers. Is there a minimum distance that drivers should keep behind one of these cars fitted with this (thinking of Massa's incident with the flying nut a few years ago) should it become detached and let go?
