I agree with you. Jackie did make it a point to cover certain issues that he is passionate about. Like the out right thievery of Chinese artifacts and cultural significant pieces at that. It is still going on today. The comedy is spot on in this movie, the underlining story is actually good. These are my opinions and I respect everyone else's. For me, Jackie Chan is the king of Action Cinema. He didn't need to rely on gigantic explosions to push the narrative along or to have massive shoot outs. And his comedy is nostalgic. Laced with antics like the silent film era on top of great martial arts. I read his biography when I was younger. The man is so creative, he came up with the comedy after his other films were bombing repeatedly. It took him such a long time, but when. He was about to give up, he did it with comedy, and it was a hit. He did it again, another hit. My fondest moment of his, is actually my memory of him. He was in the Cannonball Run movie and in the fight scene and every thing seems to finishing up, he does a double kick into the splits and rips his pants. It made me laugh as a child and his work still makes me laugh. He is the King of Action Cinema

I grew up in China watching this amazing movie, it just never gets old or outdated, and I consider this as Jackie Chan's best action movie. What's amazing is he shot this movie when he was 40 years old, simply astonishing! For those who have not seen the entire movie: in the beginning of this fight scene you may notice that Jackie didn't start with the drunken style, that's because it was forbidden by his father. His father explained to him earlier in the movie that alcohol maximize the drunken style effectiveness by numbing the pain and also allowing the practitioner to hit with greater force. However that would mean the practitioner will have to continue drinking which would destroy one's health plus make people lose sense of ethics and more. His father also told him that the alcohol consumption must be at a perfect amount to reach maximum effect, and that's why you see Jackie punched his own stomach to throw up some of the industrial kerosene to find the perfect amount.

Movies like this aren't profitable anymore. There's nothing tangible _stopping_ any team of people with a wushu/acrobatics/martial arts background making an action movie with a focus on long takes and fast, technical choreography again, but there's not a lot of demand for it because Sammo Hung, Jackie, Yuen Biao etc. already sorta perfected it and the commercial demand isn't really there. Samo Hung didn’t just go to the same school. He was one of the older boys when Jackie was dropped off by his parents. So he bullied Jackie. And it’s not just a school. It’s basically an orphanage too. But parents just bring their kids there and leave them there til they’re 18. I think Jackie was around 5 or 6 years old when his parents dropped him off. He had too much damn energy for them to handle so they just got rid of him. And upon doing so they told the master of the school that he was now Jackie’s godfather. And that Jackie was to receive double the punishment than anyone else, even whenever someone else got in trouble if I remember correctly. And this school was hard core. King Fu was considered religious at that point in China and frowned upon by the government. So the opera part was a front. The Kung fu training was secret. In public they would perform acrobatic plays with singing and all that. But in private they trained Kung fu like no other. Jackie said at one point a kid fell asleep while doing hand stand exercises. AND DIDNT FALL OVER. The master noticed and they had to maintain hand stands for another half hour or something crazy like that. Basically everything that happened there was child abuse. Lol. But that’s how we got Jackie Chan. The master was harder on him than anyone else and without that I don’t know if he would have become the insane action star he did. I highly recommend his autobiography: I am Jackie Chan. It’s just mind blowing.

In previous kung fu movies, the main character would fight 3-10 enemies, but some would walk around him and wait for their turn to fight and then get beaten with a single punch. Jackie Chan created a way to make same amount of enemies fight AT THE SAME TIME and each fighter always feels actually human being that aren't knocked out in single punches or kicks.

Just keep in mind, literally EVERY move with "drunken" style (Drunken boxing, Drunken Monkey..etc,etc) is about 2 key elements. 1) Confusion: Your stance and power throws off your opponent. What looks to be sloppy is actually balanced, your power comes NOT from direct strikes, but instead comes from more "sideways" strikes.. more of a "wrecking ball" instead of a "punch". Due to this, when you strike, you are hitting more area than a direct punch but also able to quickly shift a strike on the lower ribs upward to a shoulder or chin strike, as well as across the body to a hip strike or even downward into a leg strike. So, your body stance throws off the opponent as well as makes your own attacks confusing because there is no way of knowing where you are going to strike next. 2) Direction: THIS is the key element of both your attacks and defense. You are DIRECTING the energy of the attacks against you AWAY from you. A punch with just the slightest effort can be thrown off target, making all that energy pass right by you. Even the hits you take, you "roll with" instead of "taking". So you see more "crumbling or wrapping" around strikes to absorb more energy. Meanwhile, you DIRECT your strikes to shift during your own attacks. So a missed punch, you should continue through with a shift to an elbow. A kick moves into either knee or hip movement. Here is the thing. Drunken style is DESIGNED for you to not only take the damage but dish it out as well. It is a "high endurance" style of fighting, not a power or finesse style like Tiger or Snake styles of fighting. Drunken style fights are the type that even if you aren't "beat up" after the fight, you are STILL SORE the next day because of the amount of energy you have either absorbed through contortion, or the amount of energy exerted in order to constantly shift your stance and attacks. My instructor once called it the "Best way to hurt yourself the next morning" ... because no matter how many times we trained to use it, the next day you would see people who could barely move due to sore muscles, twisted joints, or simply just so tired that they haven't been able to fully recover.

Then he was hired as Jackie's bodyguard because back then, Jackie had some trouble with the Triads & needed protection. After seeing Ken's fighting skills, Jackie offered him a role in this movie. This long fight in Drunken Master 2 wasn't supposed to be Jackie vs Ken. It was supposed to be Jackie vs another stunt actor. It was a big deal for him and Jackie to work together for this movie, but due to Jackie's personal differences with things regarding the movie, Kar-Leung was replaced midway through shooting as director of the film by Jackie himself. Around this same era you can see another magnificent collab between Lau Kar-Leung and Sammo during the second big fight of Pedicab Driver. Kar-Leung's earlier films are nearly all classics and were mostly Shaw Brothers productions.

At the Peking Opera School, Jackie Chan trained martial arts and acrobatics for a decade. When he entered the film industry, he learned Hapkido and eventually attained his black belt. He is also known to have trained in other martial art forms such as Karate, Judo, TaeKwonDo, and Jeet Kun Do. I don't know why you wrongly say that it's hard for Jackie to keep up with these guys, his training has been intense and he is master level in Chinese gung fu. Guys don't let the "opera trained" comment fool you as this is NOTHING like what western opera is. Its basically full on martial arts training. If you are going to talk so much through the video (rather annoying, as its a reaction video not a fight commentary) then please inform people of the proper facts! He does this stuff with ease and is an expert in every martial art he's trained in. MASTER LEVEL!

Peking Opera is different than western opera but it's still not exactly martial arts training. It's most comparable to western circus stunts. Which isn't an insult, because that's very physically demanding, but it's not exactly the same as coming from a background in just southern shaolin kung fu or something. If you look at the choreography of somebody with more of a pure martial arts background, like Lau Kar-leung (who worked on parts of DM2, but not all of it), it looks a lot different than the choreography Jackie Chan, Yuen Woo-Ping, etc. Less stunt oriented, more grounded and technical. There's a lot of overlap though. Most performers and choreographers with an opera background also got some martial arts training. "Keeping up" with a lot of great stuntment while filming these wild action scenes is gonna be difficult from time to time no matter who you are. Jackie will freely admit he sometimes felt outpaced and overpowered by guys like Hwang In-shik while filming fights scenes in his prime.

From what I remember from a Jackie Chan biography thing I saw a LONG time ago and please correct me if I am wrong on this, but when Bruce Lee died, they wanted Jackie Chan to become his movie replacement. They made Jackie actually get plastic surgery to try and make him look like Bruce. Didn't do a damn thing to make him look like Bruce, but he was still able to carve out his own niche in cinema without being called a Bruce Lee clone. Still, you have to give it to the man. His movies were insane and the amount of times he was injured on set doing his own stunts. Still remember the movie, Rumble in the Bronx, where he landed on a hoverboat really bad and caused a serious injury to his right foot. He was in a cast for the remainder of the filming and had to wear a special made sock over the cast that had been painted to look like his shoe. But he still finished the film, where if that had happened to anyone else, the film would have either been shut down until the actor healed or they would have just used a stunt double and a lot of wide angle shots, with the occasional close up of the actor's face reacting to things. Not Jackie. From what I remember, he was back on set the next day filming. Man is a Legend, no doubt about it.

I know a friend just like him. I refuse to watch any movie together with him if he has already seen them. He can't help but take all the fun out of the films by talking about it, thus taking any enjoyment out of the film. As much as I want to hate him for it; I've come to realize after 25+ years...... that's just how he is and he can't seem to help himself.

Ha. I asked if you were going to do this and you said no. You said the next Jackie scene was going to be from Armour of God 😁. Glad you did it though. Great scene

The theme song of the Once Upon a Time in China series and used here is based on the Ming Dynasty folk song "Under the General's Orders"; the version used in the films is titled "A Man of Determination" and was written by Wong Jim.

THIS FIGHT SCENE IS NOT ONLY THE BEST FROM JACKIE CHANS WHOLE CAREER BUT IS REGARDED THE BEST AMONG ANY FIGHT SCENE PUT ON FILM. EVER.THE STYLE OF FIGHTING SHOWN HERE IS AMONGST THE MOST DIFFICULT OF ALL THE DRUNKEN STYLE OF KUNG FU THERE IS CALLED THE DRUNKEN DRAGON STYLE. THERE ARE ONLY 3 MASTERS OF THE DRUNKEN DRAGON STYLE EXISTING IN THE WORLD TODAY . JACKIE CHAN IS 1 OF THOSE 3.

The final boss was actually played by Jackie's own former bodyguard. Lately he's been playing a lot of comedic roles and such but yeah, him and Jackie here looks really, really good. Like some sort of great chemistry there.
