they used to have some really cool music in those segments in lieu of commercials.

At the "Weekend in Review" at 4:22, the news given sure speaks of a different era: not only Henry Kissinger suggesting that the US help beef up China's military, but a Presidential aide suggesting that the US accept business strikes instead of exceeding a Federally-set industry-wage-increase limit. Today, the US government encouraging either the strikes or setting business wage limits would evoke cries of socialism (or fascism) to no end! Back then, Americans accepted tighter government control and a healthier business-management relationship as necessary for the health of the nation, although these things were already under attack to some extent.

As to the last question . . . this was when ABC's newscasts were in third place behind CBS and NBC (notice the other two didn't have their newscasts captioned on PBS), and evidently they were trying to add viewers beyond when they aired live on ABC stations.

Still I'm sure this was a noble effort to provide news to the hearing impaired on TV.

@@wmbrown6 Probably, but this was the late 70's and there wasn't enough room to get all then aboard this for one station to show.

@@wmbrown6 given the rise of closed captions in the 80s, they probably did.
