The default button layout is designed with specifically Melee in mind and it makes a ton of sense once you get used to it for the Melee specific tech. I've messed around with my frame1 layout, but always end up going back to the default

Hey Bob. I'm proud of you for starting to use tilt attacks. It REALLY changes the whole game haha. Like you said. New DLC Moves for your character. Also, if you decide to go back to your controller for Smash, try tilt attacks on the C stick. That changed the game for me! :)

"I feel like moves come out quicker." - I kinda get what you mean. I recently build an arcade stick (nothing fancy, regular stick + 8 buttons) and I tested it on TMNT Shredder's Revenge on Steam. It was awesome to play. Fast, responsive and all that jazz. Then I went to the 8bitdo Sn30 pro to compare, and it felt so sluggish... The right controller for the right game can make a difference.

this controller style has always been beyond interesting to me. i personally play Kazuya, a character that has a ton of insane moves locked behind a lot of extremely precise inputs, and I can absolutely see a controller like this making that sort of thing a whole lot easier!

When I was young, in my country, Nintendo was not selling their consoles, there where only clones of them. So Nintendo never have any presence in the market. PC and older consoles clones where only choice for years. Some day I got this fighting game, that needed extra app be played. It turned out to be super smash Bros run via N64 emulator. I played it on my keyboard, so buttons only gaming was my default for years. It was so much fun. It's still may favourite fighting games of all time.

The default layout is actually really good, the pros maybe switch one button (Z and L i think), but for melee it's the best you can come up with. For ultimate it's maybe a bit less important, so you can switch it more. It's definetly hard to get used to, but it's very ergonomic and worth it (at least for melee IMO)

I never played Smash Bros until last week. I mostly play SF, MK, and DBFZ. I borrowed this controller, since my leverless controllers are all the typical layout, and it took me 5 minutes to orient and learn the game. I wouldn't change the layout at all, it actually makes more sense. What I notice with players who had a hard time adapting is because their hand placement is off, they usually rest their palms on the controller which loses their orientation and twists their wrist. When you life your palms and play it like piano keys

I can think about one thing that this thing will probably do better than a gamecube controller. Reliability and consistency. Snapback is a huge issue with gamecube controllers that there's multiple solutions for but for the most part. it's temporary. There is no way you are going to struggle with snap back with this kind of controller

I have a lot of bad luck with snapback inputs with Switch pro controllers (which is when the control stick makes a microscopic input in the opposite direction when flicking back to neutral, which can mess up directional moves in tight situations), so the B0XX-style controller looks really attractive to me right now. If it's programmed with Arduino it should be possible to make it show up as a Switch controller. I've done that for a custom controller for playing pinball.

Captain Falcon is a character that can utilize dash cancels which cancels running animation and allows to do pretty much any move you wouldn’t normally be able out of running animation but requires C tilt stick to do so

I assume it works with mayflash adapters as well because those are just as good as the OG. There are cheaper ones but not as good.

it does, but it requires both cables plugged in because the power isnt bridged properly, and firmware has to be updated on the adapter if it's really old. mayflash adapters aren't as good as official adapters sadly

I've switched from a GC controller to a six-button controller for Smash and never looked back. I don't have the precision under pressure I used to have on an analog stick, the only hurdle I had was walking on a dpad to do tilts, which I figured a workaround for.

Feels like something I might want to try. I enjoy Smash Bros, but I'm an old school gamer who gets a lot more mileage out of a d-pad compared to an analog stick. Which leads me to constantly wishing I could remap the directions, but no standard 'controller' has allowed me to do that.

A wired Pro Controller actually has an additional two-ish frames of latency. That’s a big deal when you’re using a fight pad / box, so it makes sense why they went for the GameCube approach, albeit still inconvenient.

You should get the 8BitDo Retro Receiver for the SNES. You can pair the arcade stick to it.

I use a stock 8bitdo arcade stick for smash and there is misconception I'd like to point out. You CAN still walk and tilts without a c-stick. Hold down to crouch, then roll into whatever direction input you want. And if doing quarter circles for f-tilt sounds bad to you, the arcade stick was never going to be your thing. Having to re-learn the game on a new control setup really helped me clean up my movement and stop depending on shield/rolling for defence. Short hops are also much easier now, which is massive.

I don’t own a switch, but I’ve wanted to get into fighting games like Smash for a while. Brawlhalla was fun for a bit but ultimately bored me after a few weeks of it being released. Multiversus came out recently (played a bit of the open alpha before it went into beta) and I’m having much more fun on there. My main issue, however, is that the game is quite buggy given that it’s a beta. The default controls use the joystick for up down left right, and while that’s pretty normal, the issue is that when remapping these to the dpad (my preferred way of using the directional controls) it bugs out and doesn’t detect inputs half the time no matter which controller I have connected. I wonder if one of these controllers would help that issue as I could just map the directional buttons to certain inputs on the stick and have the game detect it as a stick input rather than a dpad input

I was thinking up on thumb was weird but... if up is jump, and jump is thumb, then thumb as jump (or up) makes sense from a keyboard perspective. As most PC games uses spacebar, or thumb, for jump.

I was seriously considering getting this one very recently, after wanting a button controller for rhythm games. I mostly wanted to find something that had large arcade like buttons. But it being detected as a gamecube controller was a huge turnoff for me. If it could be connected directly to the switch or at least flashable, then it would have been an easy buy. Ended up getting the Gamo 2 instead (which funnily enough just came in today).

If you get the 8bitdo adapter for the SNES (bluetooth) you can use your 8bitdo Arcade Stick. That's what I do with the same Odin mod setup.

Can you get and review a PHOB gamecube controller? Idk if you have heard of them but they are the new hotness in the smash controller scene and they are completely grass roots. They use magnets to determine stick position instead of the old potentiomiter (probably butchered that word) method. Would be cool to see what u think.

In the heat of the moment in a match I've never been able to consistently get tilt attacks to come out. Usually go too fast or too far and get a smash attack instead. It's been one of the biggest reasons I've never gotten to serious about smash. I just don't feel like I have the same level of control as I do with other fighting games, my own fault admittedly. I wish I could get more functionality from the game on a standard fight stick.

I love playing on my Gamecube controller, but I'm getting up there in years and after like 30 years of video games, my hands are pretty broken. Getting competitive in Smash Ultimate was just the final nail in the coffin. I'm sure I'll be moving to one of these to keep my hands happy. Eventually. D-pads were never good to begin with. Nintendo used those instead of sticks because they were cheaper. It made the NES a much worse experience than it needed to be for a pretty small savings in cost.
