The 1999 Royal Rumble took place in Anaheim, California on January 24th 1999. This one features an infamous WWF Championship match pitting The Rock against champion Mankind. The "I Quit" match would become one of the biggest matches of the most memorable matches of the Attitude Era, and it's a match that some fans love while others aren't so keen.
The annual Royal Rumble match features some very notable names this year including Stone Cold Steve Austin and Vince McMahon. Mr. McMahon is entering the Rumble match at number 2 while Stone Cold enters at number 1. If Austin or McMahon want to win the Royal Rumble, they'll have to outlast every other competitor in the match and go the distance. The ending of this Royal Rumble was also very newsworthy, and it left fans wondering what was going to happen next.
In the undercard fans got to see X-Pac vs Gangrel, Billy Gunn vs Ken Shamrock, Luna Vachon vs Sable, and Road Dogg vs The Big Boss Man.
This video is part of Wrestling Bios' Reliving The War series.

Sorry your dad had a stroke that day...that's super shi-tty. It's crazy you can say you were there. Nowadays I feel it's consolation just to say you were there for the attitude era, but that was an iconic night in WWF history. I'm sure both of you won't forget it.

I lost my dad too, unexpectedly. He loved wrestling a lot, and after his death I've gotten back into it. I feel your pain, It's been 5 years and it feels surreal, still. he gave you tickets to see probably in the top 5 greatest Royal Rumble's off all time and that is absolutely incredible.

yeah and if you couldn't buy the PPV or use an illegal box, you listened to the PPV like it was a radio broadcast and the TV screen would be a bunch of squiggly lines I listened to this one and I remember the chair shots to Mankind's head sounded painful, and hearing Vince be announced as the Rumble winner made me so angry as a 15 year old , this PPV was chaotic and crazy in the best kind of way those indeed were the days

Did wonders for making the Rock the biggest heel in the company. He was already basically, but this established him as even more sadistic than anyone had thought of him up until that point. Which is what you need when you want to pit Stone Cold against him to headline Wrestlemania. But yah, it’s not an easy watch knowing the full context so it’s not one people tend to rewatch I think.

Iirc, that was during their first feud in 98. Luna was still upset during their second feud in early 99. Sable was more difficult. The first feud excuse was she wasn’t a wrestler and needed to be carried. The second feud was that stage of Sable flat out refusing wrestling and Marc taking over working her matches. Luna (RIP) mentioned Marc reworked the match, and I think some of the stories of arguments and fights with Marc stem from here.

That Sable/Luna match; This was around the time that Sable was at her worst backstage, and I guess she and Mero tried repeatedly to get the match delayed claiming she'd never been in a strap match before and needed more time to train, then also made threats of no-showing, so WWE caved and made it clear to Luna she couldn't hit Sable with the strap. I think in the next month or two after this match is when Sable randomly showed up in the crowd of Nitro while still under contract to WWE. Another wrestling channel actually did a video the other week about Sable during this time period by coincidence.

I have so been looking forward to this. This was the ppv that solidified my obsession with wrestling. Off the back of this, I read mick foleys first book (the first book i ever read outside of school and parents). I used that as a guide to track down every show he ever appeared on. Which in turn, led to me discovering other favourites and collecting ecw, wcw, iwa, wwf, njpw tape available. Thanks Mick! And thanks for this series

This one is special to me, it was the first WWF match i saw in over 2 years, i had completely gotten engulfed in WCW when the NWO came in the scene, but it was ironically the actions of the NWO that ended my fandom. I was so incensed at how stupid it was that Kevin Nash laid down for Hogan that i didn't even watch the thunder, or nitro the next week. The very next wrestling show i watched was this one, and the drama of the entire night completely sucked me in.
