This has happened to me as an adult. I can only imagine how these children feel. Yes it’s a hospital but being in that room with nothing after a while, it starts to feel like jail. Which makes your mental state worse. Thank God I knew some of the doctors there and they were able to get me into a regular room. But it was still horrible because family can’t visit. And it’s just lonely.

My son who is seventeen years old has been suffering from what seemed like schizophrenic behavior from the age of fifteen. ( I was just to uneducated back then to realize this ) He has been admitted once into a Psychiatric Center through Beaumont/ Childrens Farmington where he was in fact, diagnosed as having “Schizophrenia and Bipolar” disorder there. He has since had a two episodes and honestly, it has been really hard to keep him under control with his behavior. Again, ( Not equipped with this type of behavior) We went back to Childrens Hospital, this time Downtown Detroit but eventually kicked out because according to them he “seemed better”. I was genuinely concerned as a Mother and at a lost for words as I cried my eyes out to the Staff at Childrens Hospital! So watching this, brought back a familiar story that I will never forget. Please, something must be done! I need Mother’s in Michigan! Those who have been suffering in silence STAND WITH ME! Lets link up and fight for our Kids! Please comment your contact as I am willing to do the foot work with you! Oh, and I forgot to mention that because my son ended up getting kicked out of the hospital, he of course came back home but went missing for four whole days! And when we finally found him, Doctors had already had him in ICU treating him for a gun shot wound to the foot! In my heart I know that if he had been properly assessed and admitted he would have never gotten shot and almost lost his young life. Yes! THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED US! Moms, we got work to do!

I can tell you from my own childhood experiences that they don't have room because they are putting kids in there that doesn't belong there, and when the children with real mental health problems need it, it's full. I was one of the children who did not belong in this kind of place, yet I was put there at 8 years old in Bradenton, Florida, and then 12 years old in Jacksonville, Florida. These places in hospitals are called children's crisis social units. I was a foster child who needed attention and love. Not mental evaluations to make me feel that I don't belong in a normal setting. It made me feel like I didn't deserve a normal life because theres something wrong with me. There's nothing wrong with me. But there's something very wrong with the system.

The fact that 7 staff members had to restrain him during an episode is quite astounding that his mom and dad managed for so long, just them two. It does take a village with lots of patience and support to ensure our children’s needs are met. There needs to be more responsive supports for families in these circumstances.

As Someone thats been through the adolescent mental health system in Michigan, (pre-covid around 2017-2018) it is SEVERELY LACKING. I have lasting PTSD from being in White Pine and Havenwyck. Luckily, i got to stay in an empty adult wing with 8 other girls that were more well behaved, just had suicidal thoughts. But before we got moved, it was daily fights. Dont even get me started on Saginaw white pine... I was in white pine three times because my parents assumed it would be the best spot, since its less than 15 minutes away from home. They group kids together in one room, regardless of what illness they may have. We had kids with violent illnesses attacking the suicidal patients with abuse in their history, making the whole room chaos daily. The amount of times i had to hear the alarm left me with PTSD for fire alarms and sirens. It is not a safe environment to keep children. Youd probably save more money hiring 3 body guards at home and putting away any potential weapons for 4-10 days. All they do is shove medication down your throat in hopes that it will work. I literally lost most of my memories from before 15 years old because i was switching between so many medications to treat depression. They even tried to give me mood stablizers that they use to treat autism... We NEED to reform the Adolescent Mental Health System!!!!! Edit: White pine also denied me the right to switch doctors in the facility when i felt like i wasnt being treated correctly after they put me in isolation for 13 days. I was depressed. Not crazy or a felon. I was a depressed child and they put me in isolation the whole stay.

This sorta happened to me as well. I had a panic attack and I ended up being in a psych ward. They gave me all sorts medication but none for my anxiety, the doctor diagnosed me with bipolar, but I'm not. It doesn't run in my family nor do I have mood swings, I was just anxious. The medication made it worse, so I detox from it and I was able to feel more like myself again. They just give you whatever medication just so they can kick you out from the ward.

So tell me what in the world are you going to do with all the mentally ill. That need to be put where they can’t harm themselves or others. Hospitals don’t have enough beds. Nursing homes are not gonna take them. Jails don’t have the room or staffing . And if someone attempts to take their own life or is talking of harming others. States have laws saying you have to hold them for so long. Then if ordered by a Psychiatrist or judge they can end up having to stay no telling how long. So you got the state saying by law we have to hold them as well. So if there is no where for them to go. They end up sitting in a little ER room with a sitter waiting to be taken to a facility but they end up spending days in the ER where those beds are needed for physically ill people. Instead you have a mentally ill patient sitting in those little rooms for days being watched 24/7 by a live sitter. With little to no attention from ER staff. Because they are taking care of the physically ill trying to also place the mentally ill. So they need to make beds and rooms for these people somewhere.

So true!!!! There was a 12-13yr old in the ER for over a month because of their age there wasn't a facility that would accept the child. Gave the security personnel a run for their money every so often & the ER staff was completely burnt out with the child. So sad for the patient & family

This is everywhere. I’ve been waiting for over a year now. Call weekly to all psychiatric centers within 200 miles of me and still have yet to get an appointment for my son WITH a referral stating his need for an evaluation to determine a diagnosis. Every time I call the list just gets longer and longer. Won’t even add my son to it but apparently can add everyone else. He’s 6 and will fail kindergarten due to whatever he has that is causing him to be distracted and sometimes overly sensitive to his surroundings. There’s no hope for parents of children with psychological needs. The states and country do not care about us, nor have they ever. And they never will.

Teenagers are placed in mental institutions face mistreatment and often lack access to proper medical attention. As a result, many of these teens are subject to physical and emotional abuse, as well as neglect. This kind of abuse is unacceptable and needs to be addressed. The poor kids didnt know what they were getting into when they were placed in these institutions. The mental institutions are meant to provide support and treatment for troubled teens, not to inflict further damage on them. Unfortunately, many of the mental institutions that teens are sent to do not have adequate staffing or resources to provide an environment of proper care. These issues need to be addressed immediately in order to ensure that the rights of troubled teens are respected and protected. Mental health professionals and administrators must be held accountable for providing a safe and supportive environment for teens in need. Without effective mental health services, teens may face further psychological damage due to the harsh conditions they are subjected to in these institutions. Therefore, it is essential to prioritize mental health reform for teens in order to ensure that the facilities they are placed in have the resources to properly handle their needs. This reform should be a priority in order to create an atmosphere of understanding and acceptance for these young people.

This is happening everywhere and it is sad really. My children have the same issue..the issue with being misunderstood in every situation, not having services quickly without destroying the families, providing more services that offer bridge work to help children with disabilities adjust to everyday living and more services for those that cannot with the flexibility as if going into primary care facility. We know our children, we should be able to choose how those services are built with the love and care as those with their PCP that CAN handle children with multiple disabilities. Many actions should be taken now to ensure that gap of an immediate need and prolonged independent and assistant needs.

It’s not insurance. The hospital has no staff or funding. Even large hospitals are having problems. People aren’t able to be discharged, they’re too sick. If you want to open up to have 118 patients you need 3x the staff. With such little pay who wants to deal with children that need 7 security guards to handle them? Only 1 state facility. Imagine the private ones and how bad they are.

A lot of psych centers make different kids top priorities and it’s sickening. I was in the ER for a day and got placed in December for having a plan and some other kids in the psych ward were in there for trying to OD or for drug problems and they were in there for about 2 weeks. The center I went to was full for a while even with two levels and two kids to each room except for isolation rooms. I think young children should be top priority when they’re loosing control over what they do.

Our Nation has too few mental health facilities to handle the people who need help. Something has to be done to make sure people who need observation, diagnosis, medication, and therapy, have facilities to go to when needed. Some mental health units in regular hospitals, and mental health hospitals turn people away, and have overcrowding with beds in the hallways. Most are understaffed, it is a National crisis.

It's emotionally hard to work with children, it's something not everyone can handle, it's painful when adults talk about their trauma but it's at another level when a kid talks about it. They're understaffed partly because of how hard it is but also people want to be paid more. Increase pay, increase workers and there will be more beds available for the children. The remaining staff can't handle it all by themselves, so children have to wait until they can properly take care of them.
