Great to see fish being caught on the Wye - what a great river it should be! I can remember my uncle catching a 33 pounder in that exact same spot in the seventies. They were the days and I hope they soon return.

Lovely fish. Enjoyed watching this. Is this water or any other good for the fly as well?

Yes, the fishery is almost 2 miles of left bank fishing with one section of 400m, another of 300m which are excellent fly water and can be waded down the middle to cast to either bank, (15 to 20m each way). There are also a number of croys, (concrete platforms) that cause the river to narrow and these are good holding areas for fish to lie up in. They also increase the flow so a fly will work into each pool; especially with a sink tip or weighted tube-fly! The further upstream you go on the Wye, the more of a fly fishing river it becomes. Many sections just above and below Builth Wells are most like Scottish spate rivers; a lot of deep channels and water flowing fast over bedrock... It's worth a visit for a week to get around the best bits, April/May for mid/lower river or Sept/Oct anywhere!

Well you will be please to hear that my fish has been trumped by a 35lbs monster caught here on Saturday so be prepared for a 20 minute fight; there are fish showing throughout the beat now! And I will be there again this Thursday to pick up any you miss :)

This is my usual happy hunting ground, the Aramstone Fishery, and is available to book through the Wye Salmon Association's Get More Rods on River scheme. Whitney Court is another and I should imagine that there are fish beyond that by now :) High tides and good levels in the river have let the fish get well upstream this season so I think you are in the right place for Monday..

Hello Kurt, as I run the Draw I've had a look at your beat for the day and the tides! Tides won't have any direct influence as they are small and early/late in the day. But, that's not always a bad thing when the river is up like it is now... If you can get a fly away then anything Black & Yellow with plenty of sparkle!!! If you need to resort to the spinning gear, as I had to for this one, then Yellow with a Silver Blade if overcast and a Gold/Bronze Blade if sunny and bright.... But what do I know? The regular rods will know what's best on the day so, as usual, get there a little early and see what they're using :) Otherwise, see what either of the Peters is using and do the opposite (ha ha). And don't forget to send me a picture of anything you land; you have my number ;)
