I m Singaporean Chinese, n have been to China many times, for work trips and holidays. Objectively speaking, I am very impressed by and proud of China's remarkable & impressive growth in such a short period. The Chinese are both smart & hardworking. And I think this growth phenomenon achieved by China does frighten the Americans and threaten its dominant position. Nonetheless, it is in Singapore's interest, as well as ASEAN, to remain neutral in this rising geopolitical tension between the 2 superpowers. But my own take is China will surpass America, like it or not.

Singaporean Chinese says we are culturally closer to China than to America, because of our heritage and culture. As we understand how the media in the west works, we think it’s necessary to assess China in another perspective. At the end of day, China, US and Singapore are politically different, Singapore respect their decisions and sovereignty over their country. I guess if you asked Singaporean Chinese if we are closer to Malaysia or China, most of us will choose Malaysia. Similarly if you asked if we are closer to China or Taiwan, I think most of us will choose Taiwan, cause we grow up watching Taiwanese dramas and variety shows.
This title is too vague and broad for the selected participants to answer well! You need to be more specific; you are referring to politics, culture, entertainment, education, technology, civic etiquettes?!?
I don’t think this interview is very helpful for to understand how Singaporean think. If you’re leaning more to China than of course you won’t have a problem with China. Because let’s face it every country has their own problems. But, if you are standing from a democratic alliance point of view and know how Chinese governments is trying to expand its power by blurring the lines to invade other countries, then you know it’s not a very friendly country. The majority of Singaporean are still very much influenced by Chinese culture. That’s a fact. (and I think my comment is also not very helpful, simply like how they think, because some of them don’t think much and don’t ask many questions. You agree?!)

"In another view, the USA is actually under the autocratic governance of the American government! The officials only offer you limited democracy if you don't harm the elite's interests. Otherwise, they will show you what true democracy is! Israel is a good example. I suspect you haven't heard about the self-immolation of an American veteran in front of Israel's embassy!"

In many aspects, America's democracy and freedom are questioned and challenged. Firstly, the influence of money in politics is significant, with Super Political Action Committees (Super PACs) and lobbying groups manipulating policies and legislation through large donations, thereby drowning out the voices of ordinary citizens. Additionally, the electoral system has numerous issues, including widespread gerrymandering and voter suppression, which restrict or weaken the voting rights of certain voter groups, leading to election outcomes that do not genuinely reflect the will of the people. Media consolidation is another major problem, with a few large corporations controlling the majority of news and information dissemination, thus influencing public opinion and undermining the diversity and independence of the press. Systemic injustices in the law enforcement and judicial systems are also evident, with police violence and judicial bias causing frequent unjust treatment of minority and vulnerable groups, making it difficult for them to receive proper legal protection. These factors collectively make America's democratic system appear fragile and unfair in many ways.

Singapore, the smartest country, as well as the most successful one in ASEAN, has been playing smart geopolitical balancing games between super powers for decades, for the maximum benefit of the country, without being squeezed and sacrificed as cannon fodder by the US or China. Filipino people always look at the success of Singapore with envy, and wonder why they can't replicate the best practices in their homeland and why their country is still deeply trapped in US colony mentality without a clear way out. Truth hurts. A smart leader plays smart geopolitical games and invites American and Chinese companies to build factories in order to generate jobs and increase revenue, while a clueless leader easily gets emotional like a kid, often is played by geopolitical players as chess pieces, invites foreign military to build bases in order to generate tensions and increase the risk of conflicts, and sacrifices the country's development and trade. Japan and S. Korea can sit down for negotiations and cooperations, despite of their long time disputes over the sovereignty of the Liancourt Rocks in the sea between them. That is political wisdom and diplomatic maturity on full display. Other countries such as China and the Philippines can definitely learn from S. Korea and Japan to manage their difference on South China Sea, Taiwan, MILF or whatever, and develop their relationship. Even the leaders of Vietnam and Malaysia are now much smarter, more resilient and pragmatic than P-Noy and BBM. Now the Philippines is the only ASEAN member that works as proxy for Uncle Sam in Southeast Asia, and puts itself into current awkward position of either losing face or losing credibility. Soon, even Laos and Cambodia will become richer than the Philippines. The Philippines will only compare better than Myanmar.
