Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and we're back to break down X-men 97.

Episode 3 is now out and it's another banger that pulls heavily from the comics. It's filled with easter eggs, hidden details and things you missed along with the introduction of a major show villain. It's getting very very sinister and we learned a lot in the Pryor episode ey.
Heavy Spoilers ahead from this point out so if you haven't had a chance to check it check out now. Smash the thumbs up button like it's Morph turning into your Ex and with that out the way let's....let's get into the video.

Now episode 2 ended with a big reveal which came knocking at the door of the good ol' X-mansion.
Totally forgot what this reminded me of but it was this episode that the penny finally dropped. Senator Kelly showed up in a similar fashion during the original X-men film with him also looking for the X-men.
We now had two Jean Grays and many of you guessed what was going on. The first clue was given by the fact that she was pregnant and then the kid was born and called Nathan Summers. Fans of the comics will know this as Cable and it seems like the shows telling his origin story.
The comics have always been pretty convoluted and his back story has never fully been nailed down. He's the time travelling son of a clone of Jean who slept with Scott. I think. That's it boiled down to it's most basic points in the comics but they went a bit all over the place since his introduction.

TBF to Scott; he handles this MUCH better then his comic counterpart did. He gets married, they have a child; they actually do leave the X-men; then news of Jean's return and Scott's all like "Bye Bitch" and just leaves Maddie and Nathan in Alaska to go back to Jean in New York. Cartoon Scott trying to make sense of it and reason with her, even with his hesitations is a massive win for the character.

Agreed, it was a nice touch to bring up his own personal trauma with his father leaving him. Granted Corsair couldn't help it, being abducted and all, but still I do love that pseudo-callback for Scott. In the earlier seasons of the Xmen cartoon he's always been the stick in the mud but at least now with this newer season they seem to be fleshing him out decently.

That wasn’t a car nearly hitting Jean, that was her childhood best friend who was hit and killed by a car, it’s how her powers activated in the comics, her telepathy activated just as her friend was dying, and she felt her die like it was herself, it messed her up for years, thus the intervention of Charles was needed. It’s the origin of her powers in the comics.

Jean's powers were brought on by her best friend Annie being fatally hit by a car. Jean psychically linked with Annie and was in her mind as she died. In Inferno the comics,that's how Maddie tried to kill Jean. She fatally wounded herself,and tried to psychically drag Jean into death with her.

Fun fact, the faceless “Jean” in the memories is a reference to a dream Maddie had in the comics where Scott kept ripping off parts of her to add to a mannequin that became Jean whilst Maddie became a mannequin. The Magik and her Darkchild form works well as a reference here because the original Inferno story was dealing with Maddie’s breakdown and Ilyana’s trauma induced transformation into the Darkchild (the trauma isn’t explicit but, when she begs them not to let Rahne, the Calvinist girl abused by a reverend, not look, yeah… you don’t want to think about it).

I believe that wasn’t Jean getting hit by the car, it was her friend. Jean went into her friend’s mind as she was dying the first time she used her powers and saw her friend going into heaven. The phoenix saw this happening, and that’s when the entity became interested in Jean 😊 Also loved the Goblin Queen looking like a dark Sailor Moon transformation! Love this series so much!!

I loved this episode, but I wish they clearly established the amount of time that lapsed since the real Jean appeared or made it more clear when she was swapped out with the clone. It just feels like this storyline was too rushed. I realize that stretching it out will make it feel too derivative of the Phoenix sagas, but now it feels like it created more unnecessary questions that the showrunners didn't mean to make. What I mean is that it took away from pivotal Jean moments from the old series because you don't know if they involved her or the clone. She had a subtle arc of growth in both her powers and as a character, and part of it feels like it was taken away or didn't happen to her specifically. Again, I absolutely loved this episode and this series as a whole, but I hope this story doesn't end here.

This was rushed way too much. Jean, being my favorite character, I feel they rushed Inferno. Made me just think of the spider man clone saga....I wish they gave an actual answer of when Jean was changed for the clone. Like, who really was the Phoenix? Also, how is it that Bishop took cable into the future, yet he saw him in earlier seasons and didn't recognize him.

Thats my personal opinion, both were aware of the phoenix power good and dark due had their peak telepath level when Jean and Madelyne fought each other... either the switch by Sinster was done where had opportunity in season 04 Beyond good and evil episodes due Apocalypse and Mr.Sinister capturing telepath or during Season 05 "The Phalanx Covenant " when he was helping or runing swtich Jean Grey with Madelyne Pryor

In all sincerity, I like this channel better than screen crush cause I feel like it’s more organic in the way the breakdowns are done. Even with the name heavy spoilers you are always quick to not spoil too much or warn us before where as, Ryan Arey, bloody Ryan Arey, just says the spoilers in the invincible breakdowns with no warning

Given whole the plot was told, I'm thinking that Mr. Sinister swapped Jean with Maddie during the Beyond Good & Evil arc as when Maddie was probing Jean's mind, she was reading all the memories from the past including Jean as Dark Phoenix & regular Phoenix.
