This definitely one of the best beat 'em up Arcade games made, even though it never had particularly good combat system. The game is just loaded with charm, cheesy or not, and its simplicity is both what makes it so much fun to play with friends and so monotonous to play by yourself. As for the graphics, at first I wanted updated graphics but after playing the game I realized it doesn't need them. It looks just fine after all these years.

@chuckb11 the game was based on the expiremental cartoon pilot episode called "Pryde of the X-Men". the episode was unsucessful and the series was scrapped in favor of the far better cartoon we all grew up with. this game uses all of the X-Men from that episode, which were Wolverine, Colossus, Cyclops, Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Dazzler. there is your awnser.

@ELI732 you don't own this game on sega because it never came out on sega. The game you own is Spiderman-X Men Arcade's Revenge. It's a completely different game. This is the first time this game has been on any consoles.

@MenkoKun However, this is essentially a re-release of the EXACT same game(not a remake) that was made 20 years ago. Therefore, the nostalgia value should be considered when grading the game. If the graphics was upgraded and improved to cater to the younger gamers without making significant changes to the gameplay, then yeah, the game will indeed be shallow. But this game was released for the older gamers, and not the ones who grew up playing modern warfare and bioshock.

Why is this a youtube promoted video? Everyone -KNOWS- about this game. "Welcome to die!" is a catch phrase that gamers are very familiar with and often quote. Heck this video was even posted 2 years ago. And besides all this EVERY old arcade gamer remembers this game, it was in EVERY arcade. What people might not remember is SImpsons Arcade or TMNT which played a lot like this game too, check it out if you enjoy this one they were well worth the quarters back in the day.

@ryanc519 And I feel it is a completely appropriate statement. It is a review. A review is supposed to point out flaws, that's what they are for. So that the consumer knows what they are buying. Nostalgia is nothing but bias. Hiding a bad game under the cover of "it's 20 years old, therefore we should excuse it for being worse than games that are available today" doesn't work. It misses the point of what a review is. A critical view on on the product in TODAY'S market. Not how good it used to be

Okay this may have been brought up other places, but i have a question. Why are some arcade, and multiplaye modes of non-arcade, games getting shafted on the amount of area the game play takes place on? With all the big screen tv's people seem to be getting you'd think they would let us live a little and get the whole shabam shabam. And i find it annoying when they fill up the unused space with textures, cool dudette.

@ryanc519 OK, I understand your point. But really, Why should nostalgia be part of the review? Reviews are supposed to be critical views on a product/ whatever in the CURRENT market. A feeling of nostalgia has nothing to do with the quality of a game. As such the game being shallow is a valid point to express to the customer, the one reading the review. Quite frankly, if someone is buying a game for the nostalgia, they don't care about the review. It's the people that aren't, that need it.

I only played this game once as a kid. It was pretty cool for a classic beat'm up. Why are so many people complaining? He gave the game a 7.5. Since when is that a bad score? A 4.5 I could understand people being pissed about, but common. This is just immature. Besides, if you all like it so much you should just be happy that it's available to be played in the comfort of your own homes, regardless of what this reviewer thinks. Did I forget to mention that he thinks this game is GOOD!

Seeing as you have to be at least 27 years old to even have any idea about the game from back then. A review should be for the sake of the many, not for the few... To give an unbiased (that word is key) opinion of the game to let people know if it is worth the money. In this situation, nostalgia makes the review COMPLETELY biased.

while the aspects that the game is lacking that they've pointed out can be difficult to hear like some of you have said ( how you can't compare to games of now days), 7.5 is still not a bad score....I wouldn't expect anything higher for a game like this.

This game along with some other arcades games made in the early 90s is the inception of the beat em up genre. Without the creation of those games, series such as God of War, Uncharted, and a myriad of other games would never exisit. Therefore, this game (and the other predecessors) is nothing close to being shallow due to its immeasurable impact on the gaming industry.

@TeamUnholyTriforce I already played the game online with 4 players for free by emulating the Arcade version with MAME! I've been into emulation for 11 years.. so this game is old to me, even as a kid i played it. But I will say this, I did pay for xmen on xbox live.. got all the achievements in 2 hours and the game has very little replay value to me. It's a 25 minute game for the price of 10 bucks.. NOT worth it when other titles that are bigger have a bigger price tag to them.

@ryanc519 I would say not. Movies and games are completely different, the only thing in movies which gets better over time is the special effects. With a game, the gameplay gets better. What's more important? A better looking game? Or better gameplay? Starwars 4, 5 and 6 could still compete with modern movies, because of this (unless you're a stinge, who cares about graphics.). An older game cannot compete with newer games because of the evolution of gameplay mechanics.

@RyunSharp Both of the games that you named. Final Fight and Streets of Rage, were deeper and not nearly as shallow as this game. So you're statement that X-Men would have gotten a 9 back then is completely false. If anyone would drop 10 dollars worth of quarters into this game today, then I say it's worth it for them. But very few people would be willing to do that, including myself. This is only worth it for nostalgia purposes.

I think this reviewer forgets games are supposed to FUN. I mean why does everything have to present a "tear your hair out " "Hulk smash" kind of challenge to be considered a good game. Whatever happened to just sitting down to a game playing it and having fun. I am glad they didn't reboot it as couple other commenters mentioned look at the rebooted Turtles in Time.

@MenkoKun Of course the quality of games has increased dramatically since the inception of the side scrolling genra 20 something years ago. Everyone knows that. I just wanted to point out that it is totally illogical to compare a game made in 20 years ago with those made in the 21 century. If you compare the technical prowess showcases in the games of modern era, then of course the newer games are going to outshine the old ones.

When presented with this and, say, Alien vs. Predator at an arcade, I always played AvP. It's not a god tier game. This game was classic for its massive 6-player cabinet, that's basically it.

@Bman54X Well in my opinion it is worth the asking price considering these games made you spend more than $10 at the arcade if you wanted to beat the game. I remember The Simpsons game was hell when getting to Mr. Burns at the end.

@TeamUnholyTriforce And I will add to this. Give this game 1 month, and the online will be dead. Just like Duke Nukem, Doom, Street Fighter Hyper Fighting, Final Fight, Ninja turtles (both games). All these fans saying "Im a big fan of so and so game" Don't even stick around to that game long after it's out anyways. This game will be dead online really soon. Its replay value is 2/10. The price tag is too high for this small game. Save money and emulate arcade games on MAME instead like I do. =)

@ryanc519 Well, maybe shallow isn't the correct term for those games. Maybe 'Dated'. Doom has no y axis movement for pete's sake -_- . And now there is Super Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2. But Mario 64 is also awesome. I respect the kids that want to know what gaming was like back in the days but they and consumers are completely different. A consumer might not be interested in the history of gaming. A review is made for everyone. Not just the hardcore gamers that could be interested in the history.

Not a bad review.. The game is great, especially if you have the nostalgia of playing it even a little way back when.. but all in all it's not perfect.. THEN AGAIN, it's meant to bring the nostalgia out of people and have them enjoy a game they haven't touched in ages, which doesn't Need perfect anything. It's short.. story is meh.. and dialogue is crap.. but you should already know that when you buy it.. which brings us back to the entire point of the game and hopeful sales.. nostalgia.

He even did state that if you played the game before, that you most likely want to play it this time around. This game is just for nostalgia, but I do give the game lots of points for being online and playable for up to 6 players, which I though was fun.

He is however expecting a new, improved experience, from Konami, as they remake the game for the 360/Ps3, rather than getting the same game, as 20 years ago. I could literally go download an Arcade Emulator, and this rom for free, and have it cost 10$ less. There is nothing in this game, excluding online play, that wasn't in the arcade. And that, is disappointing.
