I'm impressed with the fact that nothing fell over or was broken in the building at the beginning of the video! It shows how well the engineers and architects have adjusted their designs so that the buildings don't break with the movements of the earth - they sway and bend. What a way to start the New Year!

Japanese building codes are basically: Step 1: Build everything out of indestructible material. Step 2: Bolt everything big to the indestructible material. Step 2.5: Bolt everything small to the big things that are bolted into the indestructible material.

I have such a great affinity for the Japanese people and there culture. It saddens me what happened to them during the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. And to have something like this happen again granted on a smaller scale. But on the FIRST of the new year...!!! Man they can't get a break...!!! It often amazes me how they are so used to these things over there. Cars driving while it's happening, people walking around, etc...Plus how much the infrastructure can withstand with all that shaking. I live on Cape Cod, MA year round here in the USA. And so we know what it's like to live on the ocean. I just can't imagine what it would be like if one of our local beaches got a tsunami wave. It would quite literally wipe out our entire peninsula. And we are A LOT smaller than Japan. I guess i should count my blessings because we don't earthquakes or tsunami's here. But that's not to say our Atlantic storms/hurricanes aren't fierce. We've had some really big storms of the years. Which has caused a lot of our area to have beach erosion. Where literally pieces of land just fall into the sea. I think it's probably a good thing we don't get quakes and tsunami's here. Because it would quite literally make it uninhabitable. And we need the summer tourist money/revenue for our businesses here to thrive successfully.
Por Dios! Admiro la calma con la que afrontan una situación así 😢😢😢

As someone living in an area where these kind extreme natural disasters are basically non-existent, i feel incredibly lucky and cannot fathom how terrifying it must be to experience it and have the constant realization something like this could happen at any time. The only thing we Dutchies had/have to worry about was/is flooding, but we basically took measures into our own hands and protected the whole country with dikes, dunes and the Delta Works. But the scary thing about earthquakes, in contrary to flooding, is that you can't prevent or stop them, you can only alleviate the damage a bit with building houses that can withstand the quakes and teaching people how to react.

One thing to remember when you see earthquake footage in Japan is that buildings and other structures have gone thru it several times over. Meaning, the japanese know how to build better than most. Its one things to survive a single earthquake as most building world wide would fall to major structural damage, but japanese building are made to withstand major earthquakes several times over, and that includes their equally power aftershocks. now take all this into context when you see old structures in japan especially those built in the far past. still standing to this day. amazing.
