This video is an addendum to a previous video I published on the routing needed for Live Streaming and Multitrack Record, across USB, at the same time. This is a dive into the X32-Edit software which is slightly more confusing than the console.

Thank you as always for all of your explanations! I'm going to be down this weekend to help out at my buddy's church and I think this is another one of the problems they're having... kind of. Specifically they are trying to run tracks via card AND do virtual soundcheck. Their inputs consist as follows: Channel 1-8: User In 1-8 (Inputs 1 and 2 are Local 1 and Local 2 [for Pastor's and MC's mics], Inputs 3-8 are AES50-A 3-8, routed 1:1) Channel 9-16: AES50-A 9-16 Channel 17-24: Card 17-24 Channel 25-32: Card 25-32 Their Card section lists Outputs as follows: Outputs 1-8: Local 1-8 Outputs 9-16: Local 9-16 Outputs 17-24: AES50-A 1-8 Outputs 9-16: AES50-A 25-32 They are routing backing tracks into the x32 on channels 17-32 via the card; the tracks are being run in Ableton Live, all set to outputs 17-32 within the DAW (again trying to maintain a 1:1 routing). When they attempted a virtual soundcheck, their recording in Logic (which was setup all 1:1) ended up having the console channels 3 through 16 recording onto tracks 19-32 in Logic, and nothing being recorded on channels 1-18 (not sure about channels 17 and 18 or 1 and 2 because neither the pastor's mic nor the MC mic were being tested). It seems like they need to adjust outputs on the Card section, does this sound right? I am wondering if this is what is confusing me: in X32 Edit, underneath the routing section of the Card, when you set the source for the Card Outputs, do these "outputs" equate to the X32 Inputs that you see within your DAW? In other words, if I adjust the Card output source, do you think that will fix our 1:1 routing when I switch over to Play mode for virtual soundcheck? Sorry to bother you with such an in-depth query, I don't have access to an x32 unit myself to test, and they are a mobile setup so I'm trying to make sure I have everything figured out in advance.

I think the short answer here is that to record their "non tracks" across USB they will need to match the Routing > Inputs settings to the Routing > Card settings. Again, keep in mind this is just for the non-track inputs. Currently it seems like they are set to record Local 1-16 which it didn't seem like they have anything running across outside of the two speaking mics. I hope that makes sense.

In this example though you wouldn't be able to mix all the inputs in the DAW (mixing in a box) then send them out as a livestream mix AND record in the DAW, correct? I guess I'm not understanding why you would have your live stream left and right come into the doll if you're not going to mix in a box specifically for the stream. And if you wanted to mix in a box wouldn't you have to have two computers running a DAW - 1 for backing and click tracks for live production, and the second one for mixing in a box to send out to the stream or even the house mix (just use the board as a glorified interface)? I think that's how Luke at Bethel does it (at least for streaming, the in-house they have a huge board).

I’m assuming you already have your audio properly moving from Ableton to the ATEM so I will just speak to troubleshooting your volume concerns. 1) Usually this is due to low (improper) gain structure on the console. This video discusses this issue and can help you get that corrected. This will give you more signal coming into Ableton to work with. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXOrqX-En8iNsNE 2) Now that you have a solid signal coming into Ableton you can properly EQ and compress your inputs and build a great mix. The last step before pushing to your stream is a step referred to as Mastering. This helps you get your mix volume level up to a broadcast level. This video speakers to how I do basic mastering in Studio One with plugins. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXO4ioejpteNjKs

Thanks. I was struggling with this. We mix our livestream in Reaper. I record our sessions and then mix from there. Not perfect but it gets it close. Really hard to mix a livestream in the house because the house sound bleeds right through the headphones. Plus I can remote connect and mix from home. I was wondering how you can get 32 up and down plus a master stereo feed. You can't. :)

The next best solution (depending on the rest of your gear) is to run 32 into the DAW, a 2trk stream mix from the DAW back to the console and then out from the console to a video switcher (or other device). This video covers that setup. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaG9oaaFlNFnh9U

Curious on the CPU load running both at the same time as I am thinking about doing the same with Reaper and ECAMM if I can figure out the routing.

I do not personally have a Dante card to explore, but the way I understand you can route all signals on the Dante network to any other device assuming you have the Dante software installed. With this in mind you can run your mix out to VMix and all 32 out to another computer for multitracking.

I setup multitrack with reaper and it worked but now when I go to Vmix, nothing comes out. Audio is not loud and I have mixbus 1-2 as my livestream buses. We have an s32 digital box so our channels 1-16 are all on AES and then 17-26 are microphones connected directly to x32. I used output 31 and 32 within user to output 1-2 which is my livestream buses but yeah nothing comes out.
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse Ай бұрын
For starters, make sure a mix is set to the X-USB audio driver. And understand that Vmix will be looking at whatever is coming across USB 1/2. You need to get that live stream audio set (using the custom user outside) to go out USB 1/2 and then you can fill in the remaining tracks you want to multitrack record. Since your DAW is working, I would get it setup properly for 1-stream L, 2-stream R, 3-input 3, 4-input 4, etc where you put your input channels 1 and 2 at the end of your list. Record into the DAW and then listen to channels 1/2 in the DAW to confirm it is your livestream mix (keep in mind you might need to pan them to sound correct). Once this is working you can load up Vmix and you’ll have your stream audio on USB 1/2. Also, keep in,ind the security settings where you might have to give Vmix access to your “microphone”

I actually record all 32 inputs and while recording I send the master directly to obs via the ReaStream plugin, all this with Reaper. So I record 32 channels and stream at the same time with zero latency.

ReaStream sounds like a cool tool to look into as there are plenty of people that would like to go direct from their DAW to stream. Most Windows machines give that option, but Mac doesn’t allow it, but maybe this is a solution. Thanks for sharing.

@@AllamHouse Instead I'm stuck with a problem on the X32. I'd like to connect a Korg Kaosspad to the reaper master via the X32's aux, but I can't. I'm probably doing something wrong with the mixer's routing or with Reaper itself. Do you have any tips for me on how to connect hardware effects to the mixer and Reaper?
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse Жыл бұрын
I'm not familiar with this Korg device and a quick search only showed the face of it and not the connections. If it is providing one or two 1/4" cables as outputs you can plug these into the AUX In slots on the console. This would allow you to mix them as any other instrument (using the third layer) and a little routing will allow it to be recorded (like other inputs) across USB into your DAW. 1) Go to Routing > Input and make sure the AUX In (far right) is set to the top option, AUX In. Confirm it is working and you can hear it in your house, monitors, or solo into your headphones. 2) To send it to your DAW, go to Routing > Card and set your 25-32 as "User In 25-32". Then go to Routing > User, go to Input, 25-32 and set 25-30 with whatever inputs you are usually using. Finally, set 31/32 to be sourced by AUX Ins you plugged your Korg device into. 3) Set your DAW to record the Korg sounds which are coming in on USB 31/32

Why not put the Live stream channels on USB-31 and 32 from the start? Makes more sense to me.... I`m just starting to explore a set up for multitrack recording. The band have an Behringer X32-Rack and an S16, remotely controlled with x32-Editor on PC. We are going to use Reaper to record. They have the X32-USB card insertet in XR32-Rack mixer. No problems to get the audio in and out of Reaper, but the routing internal in XR32-Rack for the return from Reaper confuses me... They all obviously comes from the card... But where and how to map them to get in on the mixers respective channel-strips again?? The idea is to playback the recording trough the mixer, without needing to change the routing every time...
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 5 ай бұрын
The reason for running the Live Stream in 1/2 is because most streaming platforms (OBS, VMix, etc) only receive audio on input 1/2. OBS had a recent update that allows you to select different inputs, but most still only receive input 1/2. With this in mind, we needed to adjust a few settings in our multitracks to record/play properly. I hope that helps.
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 5 ай бұрын
For your routing question, I like to change my routing inside the DAW and save it as a template so it’s the same every time. For this you would alter which channel your audio is leaving the DAW. For StudioOne (that I use) it sends out through Subgroups. Usually ai have a regular mapping of Input 1 mapping to Sub1, but in the case of having a stream on 1/2 and I need to change my Kick/Snare (common) I would change the kick (input 31) to Sub 1 and follow suit for my Snare.

Thanks for reaching out and posting your issue. Assuming you have both of your MixBUSes linked, the board should automatically pan them hard left and hard right to provide a stereo image. It sounds like this is already in place and you hear it in stereo in the headphones. This is a good thing. You should be able to solo the mix at the video switcher to confirm it is in stereo. Finally (where I think your issue is happening) you want to look at VMix and make sure you do not have a setting to “mix down to mono” or something like that feature. It is common in Zoom and other streaming platforms where there is only talking going on. Also, make sure you turn off echo cancellation and any other setting that might get in the way of your stream audio. Let me know what you find out or if you need more help.
