2:20 although I was seating at toilet seat I stood up for respect to USSR

The instruments sound very crisp and high quality. Not bad at all. Of course, having a genuine Roland SC-88 connected to my PC, I don't really need it, but still, it's nice to see that good MIDI modules are still being made in 2018.

Man, that sound bank sounded awesome. Great video! Wish you *had* stuck a little Lego dude on top of the shuttle, though. 😄
@@dosnostalgic Take a look on my link above, there you´ll find the Lego dude :)

Enjoyed the video. Am looking into these after seeing Phil's video yesterday. Ideally I would find a Roland but they are quite expensive here...

Great find! I might grab one for Christmas.

Hey do a video on all the command and conquer installation processes and the soundtracks that went with them since EA recently announced that they're going to revive the franchise!

10:00 first time I see a game using MIDI for sound effects
@JohnVillar5 жыл бұрын
That was pretty popular back then.... some games used the Adlib as sound effects device too, which gives you extra obscure points..... iirc Wolfenstein 3D had that option, same with Duke Nukem (not the 3d one, the 2d side scrollers).

Hey man, you made me buy this thing! Now I'm having trouble enabling remapping MT-32 music to GM. How do you do that in SCUMMVM?
@dosnostalgic6 жыл бұрын
Ok, so it doesn't work for all the games, but in case with LOOM, assuming you've left all the sound settings on default: Click the "Edit Game" button, go to "MT-32" tab, there select "Override global MT-32 settings" and "Roland GS device (enable 32 mappings)," and that's it. Note that you need a version of LOOM that was patched to support MT-32.

in one of your podcasts you talked about how in the soviet union to get a sound card you would put together instructions from the back of a magazine and like... i'd be way more into a video about that tbh as cool as this is
@dosnostalgic6 жыл бұрын
I don't know how to solder things, so it's rather unlikely. However, those "cards" were just Covox clones, just simple DACs, in case you wanted to read up on that further.

@@dosnostalgic i guess my point was a more overarching one about how theres so much fascinating stuff i've learned about through your podcast about experiences that are unique to you and your background that don't really come through as much on your youtube channel. sorry for bringing negativity, i really enjoy the content you produce.
@dosnostalgic6 жыл бұрын
I didn't take this negatively. Trust me, if I could show off something like that, I would, but sadly I just lack the required technical skill. And just talking about something in a video instead of actually showing it, I think, is kind of boring. I appreciate your viewership, and hopefully some day I will be showing off more Soviet/Russian things, provided I can get my hands on them.
@armorgeddon4 жыл бұрын
I also think such stories are very interesting so maybe in a future podcast consumer tech in the soviet union and early post-USSR years could be a topic to talk about. Maybe someone from other eastern european countries including the GDR could join in.

Which Yamaha sound card are you using in the video?
@dosnostalgic5 жыл бұрын
It's an AOpen Cobra AW77L II card with a Yamaha YMF744 chipset.

@@dosnostalgic Does it work directly with MIDI devices or you need SoftMPU?
@dosnostalgic5 жыл бұрын
External MIDI output works perfectly, but only with Windows drivers. SoftMPU is only ever needed for pre-General MIDI devices, which Buran isn't.
@almenarab5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Did't know that... I thought a MPU-401 was always needed
@dosnostalgic5 жыл бұрын
MPU-401 is needed, but that's not what SoftMPU does. SoftMPU emulates "intelligent" mode output on "dumb" cards.

How would you connect this and still get digital audio?
@dosnostalgic6 жыл бұрын
Digital audio would still be handled by your sound card, so you'd either need something that could mix them together (a mixer or a simple audio joiner), or a different set of speakers just for the sfx.
@OvermannOnline6 жыл бұрын
Ok that's what I was thinking.
