Liero was a product of blooming Finnish indie game scene of mid-90s, there were plenty of other gems as well (Wings, Threat, Slicks'n'Slide, Triplane Turmoil), some even the same style (Molez), not sure why Liero specifically became such hit interntationally.

Very nice. I remember playing Liero with friends and that one kept us untertained for at least a couple of years for a quick hot seat multiplayer round here and there. Interesting to see all the other DOS games from that year, thanks! Remind me to fire up my Cyrix again :-)

surprisingly there were still some dos games around even in 1999 - Airline Simulator 2, and i think some Football Masters games - and also Battlecruiser 3000ad continued to be a dos game in all its versions up to version 2.09 in the late 90s i have found there were dos games still out in the 97-99 period that however were sold as being for windows 95/98, and even the box requirements might state this but then when you go to install it would be a dos installation. - 442 Soccer and Battlecruiser 3000ad version 2.08 did this There also was Prost Grand Prix , which is a nice F1 racing simulation, not as agood as Microprose GP2 but not too bad

Man, I love 1998 when it comes to gaming but yeah, DOS gaming certainly wasn't at the top there anymore. Thank you for this collection of games. The worst game in this collection is Extreme Paintbrawl, no question about that. For best it's more difficult, I guess The Great Giana Sisters. Also respect that Gronkh is one of your patrons (if it is him), he is arguably the biggest LPer here in Germany.

Lovin' that intro with you in person, nicely done. Also lovin' the way you announce the games with that DOS font/UI, excellently done! Not to mention that nostalgic intro 'Anatoly remembers' straight from the 'Accolade' intro that I remember it from the very old Grand Prix DOS game. Perhaps you can add audio to it similar to Accolade intro, but of course as unique work. Oh man that'd make it complete! Anyway another subscriber for you!

Redneck Rampage was the only game I even tried to play from your list.

I played Acid Tetris a lot back then, it came in a Brazilian shovelware magazine called "Revista do CD-ROM" (CD-ROM's Magazine). Watching your showcase, I suspect the soundtrack was not properly recorded for some reason, though (looks like only one channel was recorded).

Just extracted the game's music (turned out to be in the UNI tracker format) and checked. Everything was recorded correctly. It's a match. There just wasn't that flute-like solo in the part of the song in the clip I've chosen for this video.

The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard. A great game of '98 that nobody played, BECAUSE it was MS DOS only! It did had a support for 3Dfx Voodoo, though...

I don't think that was that big of a factor, especially since Windows 95/98 ran DOS games just fine. You needed Windows to install this game in the first place. Also Windows was required if you wanted to run the 3Dfx version.

Resguard was a 32-bit DOS game tested to Run under Windows, as Windows 95/98 provide native support for DOS games with bridged virtual DOS drivers for certain hardware. DOS Glide games can run under native DOS, since the DOS Extender provide a protected mode environment when Windows are not present. (It was part of DPMI standard, as Windows 95 has the quintessential DPMI server). Otherwise Redguard would not run under DosBox.

A question for you - when you do your streaming videos where you launch many games from a "Midnight Commander" type of file manager, how is it you have so many games directories in there if MS-DOS has a 2GB limit on partition sizes? There seem to be far more games in there than would fill 2GB.

What you're seeing is an emulator, so there's no partition limit.

I think 96 was probably the swan song for dos gaming, once windows 95/directx adoption picked up dos releases slowed to a trickle

3dfx DOS support via Glide was the last lifeboat that extended DOS gaming as mainstream for a little longer. Still DOS Glide games are 32-bit DOS programs that require DOS Extenders

Were all of these re-released on Steam or something? I've got boxes of old games from the 90's I can't run anymore because of hardware/driver/whatever incompatibility. Want a copy of Doom2 on 10 3.5 floppys? Tie Fighter has fewer disks. Not sure why I'd be looking at DOS games after both Win95/98SE were released . . . . .

Great video ! I'm looking for a game I was playing as a kid. It's like the same engine than GUNSHIP 2000 but you play basically 911 operator, with an helicopter and there are fire over town, and you need to call ambulance/firefighter to help. Graphics were shitty but I want to find it ;(

Well one year later, xatrix published kingpin life of crime and that game was wayyy ahead of any other shooter and had smooth fps conpared to most shooter games from 1998.

Some of this is really nostalgic. I remember thinking Gunmetal looked so awesome seeing it in retail stores, but we never did pick it up. We did get NAM, because my brother was a fan of BUILD engine in general. What a crap game. The Varginha Incident I only know about because of Civvie11, of course. Really ambitious game for the time, but the developers' ambitions outstripped their ability. Bethesda's Burnout game was pretty cool. A successor to X-CAR, it ran on the same engine as that game and as Daggerfall, Skynet, and others. Chub Gam 3-D looks so bizarre I'm tempted to call it outsider media. lol. But Liero is legendary.

Chub Gam 3D is actually just a 3D FPS game maker from Pie In The Sky (though I forget the name of the actual program, the company name stuck with me). They didn't bother changing much of the default graphics, so this shouldn't really be considered a "game" as it's more just someone's crappy rpg-maker-esque submission from software made by another company.

Chub Gam 3D is notable for having an extremely large number of downloads for a game of its time. It is a certified cult classic. Plus, I resent the notion that games made with game creation tools somehow aren't games. Of course they are.

@@SonyUSA As someone who has actually used most of the versions of 3D Game Creation System (yes, that was the name) I can tell you that the game's usage of it extends far beyond tutorials, and also frankly beyond what most other users did with the tool. The tool itself is not a game, unlike games made with it, so it wouldn't be approptiate to put in this video, but especially because this version of it wasn't released in 1998.
