What a great couple of videos. Loved your bts info, very informative and helpful - I'm keen to know you found handling the data, I know it's going to be a lot but how much, and how long did it take to copy over to your mac. For examples any much footage in time does the X5R hold when shooting RAW and 4k? Can you copy it over to back it up then process it later, I heard it had to go through some software first, is this right? And your second film, edited together is lovely, a great example of what it can achieve, I liked how slow and smooth you moved, allowing time to properly observe the landscape in detail. Well done to you and your guys. Dominic

+pixel.flights You get about 30 minutes of footage per 512GB SSD. Here's a link to a video I did showing approximate transfer times: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYq3o6N4h5J2eZo . And yes, unfortunately you have to go through CineLight to offload media, I'm really hoping they change this in the future.

Fantastic work Ian. Just read your blog on inspire pilots. This is the best X5R footage I've seen. Did you film in 30fps and slow down to 24fps on some clips?
@IanCresswell8 жыл бұрын
+WaaProdUSA All shot at 30 and rendered at 30.
@geckovision7 жыл бұрын
Great work Ian. Really great footage. The soundtrack is heartbreaking. Overall really well done. I think there is a lot more to be done in post. For example, some of this footage was obviously shot in high frame rates at high shutter speeds. Both lending to a non-cinematic feel. Obviously shooting at high frame rates and not actually slowing it down will give it a commercial look. You can export it in 24 which essentially removes frames and gives a much nicer film look. As for the high shutter speed, this as you may know can be solved next time with some ND filters. I especially like grad filters as it increases dynamic range for sky highlights. Lower shutter speed gives a much more cinematic look. As per color grading, I'd look carefully at how Newman films is grading their x5R footage as the result is absolutely stunning. Conclusion: you can fix the frame rate and color grading, but you're stuck with shutter speed which happily is the least hindering to achieving a gorgeous "film look".
@IanCresswell7 жыл бұрын
Kimball, thanks! As to your comments on capture techniques: I choose to shoot aerial footage at 30fps. Although 24fps is a traditional film frame rate, I don't care for it when shooting serials. Footage can quickly become too choppy, even using the appropriate shutter speed. I prefer the aesthetic of 30fps for my pieces, as a personal prefernce. It's also best practice for stock, since much stock is requested at 30fps, and can easily be conformed to 24 with a pleasing slight slowdown. Secondly, I always use ND filters. Every shot in the video is shot at or near 1/80 shutter speed. I realize the traditional "180 degree shutter" would put it at 1/60, but I find it to have a touch too much motion blur, leaving it unable to retain detail in high frequency areas of the image. My personal preference is 1/80 or 1/100. Still has pleasing motion blur, but retains detail. As to Neumann LUTs and processing, I have a lot of respect for their work, but I don't care for their processing style. It's a bit over processed for my taste, often with an overly HDR look that doesn't seem natural to meet. It's neat, but I don't care to use their LUTs in my work.

Amazing footage and editing! Curious, I have a I1 V1.2 rev D t600 bought it used from b and h. Virtually new condition...If I changed the gimbal and purchased this camera would it be able to carry it in flight? Sub your channel thanks!
@IanCresswell8 жыл бұрын
+Al Diaz I filmed this entire video using the X5R on my V1 Inspire rev A (yes, the very first batch of Inspire 1's shipped over a year ago, with the nice woven carbon pattern). I bought the X5/X5R dampening plate kit (w/leg extensions) and that's what I used with the X5R to shoot the video. So, I know that a V1 Inspire 1 will carry the X5R. I will say though, that I personally would recommend getting a V2/Pro for the X5R, since I think the extra KV on the newer motors will come in handy in certain situations. V1 will work, but I plan on using V2/Pro in the future.

Ian, there are couple shots there with some macro blocking artifacts. I think in the sky and dark areas at the end. Is that the camera or youtube compression? Have you shot 60P in HD? How does it look? What frame rate was this one shot with? Thanks in advance.
@IanCresswell8 жыл бұрын
+Jonesy Jones There's no macroblocking at all in the RAW files. Now, there is some noise in the blues of the sky in some portions of the video. As with any camera, the blue channel is going to be the most susceptible to noise. But, no, there's no macroblocking in the RAWs whatsoever.

Great work, nice shots! I would choose some more uplifting/epic music, but that is ofcourse personal preference. Do you fly everything LOS if your camera is controlled by someone else?
@IanCresswell8 жыл бұрын
+the unique view Thanks, I realize the music is a bit haunting at times, but I really loved the sort of bittersweet sound. Everything I shoot is single operator, just me. I try to almost always be LOS. Very very rarely do I break that personal rule.
@adictiveadictive8 жыл бұрын
+Ian Cresswell whats LOS?
@IanCresswell8 жыл бұрын
+adictiveadictive "Line of sight". It means always flying your UAV within your ability to see the actual craft with your own eyes. For example, not going behind buildings or trees, and not flying so far away from yourself that the UAV becomes too small to see in the sky.

We didn't fly inside any National Parks. Footage from within park boundaries was all handheld, carrying the Inspire1/X5R like a gimbal. I'd bet nearly all this same footage could be shot today, I doubt much of anywhere we flew has been converted to NFZ. Maybe a portion of the California coast. They seem to be adding a lot of NFZ area out there for bird/marine life reasons.
