I’m done with Microsoft/Xbox. As a former Xbox fan, I will no longer invest in any console going forward. The Series X is my last console I’ll own from them and instead be building a RTX 5090 pc rig and play their games & PlayStation games as well. Microsoft made it clear they don’t care about console and game exclusivity. However I will keep investing in Sony PlayStation eco as they tend to still be having some exclusivity to its platform with great solo games. I’ve already pre-ordered the PS5 Pro and plan to buy a PS6 considering Sony remains the same with exclusivity.

You won't need a 5090 unless you're planning to use it for animation or a workstation. It will still outperform anything else in gaming but so will the price.

It seems to me that a lot of these "we want Xbox to do better" sentiments often end in "...to keep Sony in check" or "because we need competition!" rather than the premise of Xbox being worth it on its own. It's weird, because it's like people want Xbox to exist, but in this nebulous sense where they're not specifically engaging with what Xbox has to offer; like they only want Xbox to be this foil to Sony that keeps them from becoming a big, bad monopoly often with the $700 PS5 Pro being used as ammunition. Some seem to want the idea of competition being propped up rather than accept the real results of said competition.

I see your point and it's definitely one well worth pointing out. While there's not anything wrong with the idea that competition is good as a general principle, there does come a point where a company's behavior and lack of results begs the question: is the juice worth the squeeze? And, afterall, if Microsoft were to retreat, that might also serve to make room for a more worthy competitor. People tend to become too fixed and limited in their perception of what's possible. Also, I think the whole 'we can't risk letting Sony succumb to their own hubris!!; argument is way overplayed. When you consider what AAA development costs these days (as well as current pressures on the consumer in this inflation-ridden economy), Sony is still VERY pressured to deliver hardware that can play those games as well as possible for the lowest possible price. And that's probably also why they can't afford to "subsidize" the market at a significant loss, at this point. It's just not sustainable. The idea that a Microsoft retreat would be seen as license to just go hog wild isn't realistic.

Over 70% of Xbox Series consoles sold are Series S consoles. So this shouldn't matter to the vast majority of Xbox gamers, since they're not even playing on the more powerful of the two current Xbox consoles. Most of the hardcore gamers moved to Playstation during the previous generation. That's why there's no mid-gen refresh of the Xbox, Microsoft has the numbers, they know most of their audience aren't even on the Series X and wouldn't upgrade to an enhanced console anyway, so the existence of PS5 Pro enhanced games shouldn't really affect them. They weren't going to buy a more powerful console anyway, so it really just comes down to them not liking the idea of the best version of Xbox games being on Playstation.

The uncertainty surrounding future Xbox hardware at console level seems pretty clear, judging by the whopping price tag of the PS5 Pro. Sony must know there’s going to be no competition so can set the price at what they want.

I can see where people might feel betrayed, having selected Xbox over Sony due to promised that went undelivered. At the end of it all this just feel like MS waving the white flag in terms of hardware. The recent purchases of Bethesda and Activision insured that MS would live on in a software publishing sense. I see it as MS undoing on of their greatest mistakes in getting into hardware in the first place. MS had it made in the PC software ranks for years, then got into the hardware business. Over time MS as learned that hardware is nothing but lost revenue as the past couple of consoles are all sold at market loss (at least I remember PS3 and potentially 4, and definitely 5 all being sold at a loss initially). Making a powerful console at a reasonable price continues to be difficult when the consumer expects more and more, plus, the development cycles don’t really allow for shorter console cycles as most games take anywhere between 3-5 years to develop. MS was never going to be able to compete with the likes of Apple in terms of hardware, because of how the software (games) are developed. So it makes complete and total sense, pull out of hardware and control the software. Sucks for the gamers…

The point where they announced gamepass, I was thinking to myself if microsoft will change their whole plan since gamepass just cant be profitable enough. Seems like I was right. Normally I always owned every system (xbox,ps,nintendo,pc) but not this generation. there is just no reason at all to own an xbox and my brain struggles to understand why these fanboys cant see that.

Valve did not go forward with the steam box for the reason console players just want stuff to work. PC users don’t like pre built units for the most part as they love to build it themselves as everyone claims to have a custom built pc as a gaming pc… the ability to swap out parts / upgrade… you also enter a market that is controlled by very large hardware manufacturers (Nvidia was valued as the richest company at one time in 2024) and MS is a software company much like Valve is. TLDR: why get a hybrid when you can just get a good PC.

@@DarthAscension because console gamers like plug and play, already optimized games. Digital Foundry have talked about this many times, a Windows based console that can run steam, gamepass etc with onboard optimizer similar to Geforce Experience is very doable.

If we look at the current state of Unreal engine 5 games on the base PS5 we can see that performance is average compared to the series x as the x was built for next gen engines. the performance of UE5 on the series x has been pretty much a constant 60fps all for the low price £436.. The PS5 PRO will still be bottle necked as stated by DF stating that some next gen games WILL not run at 60FPS. All the PRO will be doing is blurring the lines between performance and Quality which in itself is a good feature, but if they still offer performance and Quality modes then i dont really see what the PRO is offerring that the Base PS5 is already doing other than enhanced ray tracing which to be fair nobody needs that on a console.. that raw power should be used else where. Why pay more for the the same performance... Ultimately we wont really see any real benefits of the PRO for a couple of years but by then the Next gen Xbox will be out on 2026 if rumours are to be true. The current batch of remakes and remasters for the PRO is pretty embarressing if you ask me running PS4 games at PRO Enhanced with a couple of PS5 title Remastered for the PRO. i dont really see Xbox needing to answer to anything really... A PRO being sold to the same PS user, so still no growth!!! If some people want a shinny new toy then go for it... we all do it sometimes 🙂

@@ReforgeGaming you are entitled to your opinion as am i... but my opinion is based on DF but also from current next gen games that run on UE5 which have been proven every time that the series X performs better at constant 60 fps. We have yet to see any substantial data to show the PS5 PRO running any next gen games.. we maybe suprised but nothing to to convince anyone as of yet unless we are going off PS4 games or 1st party games this gen that are not using current gen engines like UE5. im predicting 3rd party games will still struggle on the most part to run a constant 60fps unless the graphics are downgraded. its great in all seeing things a little clearer or having a bit more colour or texture etc... but if the 60 fps are not being met on next gen games, the PRO is not giving value for money as imo that is what the PRO is for... enhanced visuals at a solid 60fps... the GPU is a 6800 or a 3080 with raytracing comparable but not fully on par with a RTX 4070 as stated by DF. To say that any of this is not true and is a lot of words is a bit disingenous and dismissive but again you have your opinion as do i. Thank you for the debate.

Wow, what an immature and naive viewpoint. The fact that titles are being optimised for the PS5 pro has no negative impact on current xbox users at all. They still can play their games and the games are just as good (or bad) as they were before. And if you want to play the game on the best console on the market,.. buy a PS5 pro. The only thing you lose is bragging rights,... so what? PlayStation fans will also have to purchase that new gameconsole if they want to play those games on the best hardware (excluding pc) so you can't say they are being favoured. Actually, giving your favourite devs the chance to make more money should be good for everyone. The point is, these are big corporate companies. They are not your friend, you don't have to give them your loyalty. Just buy the games you want on the console you want. You owe them nothing. As developing games are incredibly expensive these days it would be a good financial decision to earn as much money from the games as possible so studios survive and lay offs can be minimized. With the installed xbox base chances are studios just can't earn enough with xbox exclusives only.

When Nintendo had some issues with more powerful consoles, they chose what they do best; innovation. Microsoft has been in troubles for a long time now, they should do what they have done since day one: software. The only problem they have now, they were trying to get Sony out of the sub model with gamepass and the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Sony eventually will accept them, but only when they see no danger to PS Plus.

PC master race here. I'd be super pissed if I was an Xbox owner. I'm really interested to see how the next Xbox hardware ends up selling. I feel like nextgen is a do or die time for them hardware wise. If they start the next generation early and still struggle to to sell, I can only imagine that will be their last console. My guess is that it will be. If I can purchase a PS and get both PS and Xbox games, then there's no reason to purchase an Xbox.

I am really hoping Xbox can come up with a GOOD plan that can involve their games being multi-plat while still being in the hardware/console space. The last thing we need is Sony thinking they can price gouge. (some would argue they are already doing this with the PS5 Pro).
