Marketshare is one facet of competition, but you can see clear as day from the Insomnihack that yes, Sony very much does consider Microsoft and Xbox as competition worthy of being monitored and countered. Even without their behind-the-scenes communication being exposed, you can tell that Sony have tried time and time again to ensure Xbox doesn't start eclipsing them in feature-set and value offerings. Xbox is an appliance that is subsidized by game and in game transactions. Same goes to PlayStation and Switch (even though the latter makes a small margin). Having to front the cost for the device, PC in this case, and the flexibility (in that PCs are made for more than just gaming with more components) is going to be costly. However this might be mitigated by Valve continuing to develop hardware such as Steam Deck. Maybe they will start their own home console...maybe.

I think the silence from Phil spencer paints a very telling story. As far I'm concerned what they were 15 years ago doesn't look like it can ever come back. I wish I was wrong but I highly doubt it. Xbox/Microsoft is deceased for me. This is coming from an ex-bot loyalist. Six months ago, I saw the writing on the wall that console gaming was dead for them. I have since switched to Sony PlayStation 5 & PS5 Pro, where I primarily play games and make digital purchases. My Xbox Series X will be the last console I'll ever own from Microsoft, regardless of the next-gen console they put out. I’ve not renewed my Game Pass and don't plan to either. Microsoft has demonstrated that they can't be trusted and don't care about their fan base of console gamers. They went to PC and basically anywhere to put their games and morphed into a software company. Besides, Sony puts out the best single-player narrative games in the industry, which I enjoy best. I will wait for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle game to port to my PS5 Pro. I'm not supporting anything related to Microsoft that only pertains to them.

Games are very expensive to make. Companies can only have a certain amount of baskets so they’re putting increasingly more eggs in less baskets. If they need to pay each individual more like many strikes have demanded then yeah there’s going to be less games overall which means each basket can’t be as risky. One lost basket means you’re wayyyy more screwed than ever before so less games can be innovative/different as taking risks is a lot more risky than ever before

Xbox is doing this because they’re floundering in the console space, so far in the rear view mirror it’s hard for Nintendo or Sony to see them anymore. Of course they desperately need to expand their userbase. Why would Sony (or even more so Nintendo) follow this course? *They are in the lead* with vast userbases in the 60-100million+ ranges. Glad you like it. I picked up a slim when it first came out but I primarily game on the Series X. I just like the UI, achievements and atmosphere of the Xbox better. The PS UI just doesn't feel as warm and welcoming. Weird, I know!

@jaysabz7355 I got the slim model as well. And I personally like the PS5 dashboard/UI more, it feels fresh and new and love the music that plays in the background too. The game card feature is pretty cool as well, I like how you can see your trophies and completion percentage for each game when scrolling between your most recently played games on the home screen. And sometimes depending on the game if the developer implements it, it will show the game's artwork and a soundtrack from the game will play too as you scroll through your recently played games. The DualSense controller is amazing too, it's now my favorite controller to use. The controller really shines when playing PlayStation's first-party games like, Astro's Playroom, AstroBot, Horizon Forbidden West, Horizon Zero Dawn: Remastered, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part I: Remake, The Last of Us Part II: Remastered, etc. And for me personally, I've always enjoyed PlayStation's trophy system more over Xbox achievements. It just feels so much more rewarding, unlocking that Platinum Trophy for 100% completing the game. With that said, I also appreciate how Sony separates the base game's trophies from the DLC/Add-Ons. What this means is, your 100% completion will never get broken whenever new trophies get added to the game and they will get their own category separate from the base game which is really neat and makes things a lot more organized. And while Sony doesn't do day and date which I'm personally fine with, PS+ Premium is pretty solid overall. You get access to over 600+ games, which includes a "PlayStation Classics Catalog" where you can play PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP games, which a lot of the original PS1 and PS2 games have trophy support, this is something I wish Microsoft would do for their original Xbox games but I doubt they have any interest in doing that. Anyway, I still have my Series X, it's a well built console and is a lovely machine. Sadly, I'm just not happy with the direction Xbox is heading in and it's not something I want as someone who's primarily a console gamer. Over the last few years, it seems like Xbox has lost so much of its identity and they've been so hellbent on Game Pass and cloud gaming. Xbox lost me after that marketing ad came out "This is an Xbox" as it doesn't seem like core gamers are their intended target anymore.

Fully agree Matty, I grew up on Playstation starting with the original. Through the years xbox never had anything I wanted to play bad enough to leave Playstation. Now this Gen I finally decided to buy both platforms only because of starfield as I'm a big Bethesda fan and get 4 years into this Gen for xbox to be like you don't need our box were shipping everything to all platforms. Now I'm sitting here with a box I probably won't need by the end of the year with everything going to Playstation.

I'm glad I got my Series X purely for the fact that it's a great backwards compatibility machine. Most of the great games from earlier in the Xbox's brand's life play them at their best on the Series X. But for everything else, hell maybe even for playing a ton of older titles, a good PC just buries it deep in the dirt. I haven't booted up my Xbox in ages, there's almost no point to it.

The loss of XBox as a competitor and rival in the console space is a massive blow to gaming. Maybe Valve will rise up to fill up that spot, who knows, but I don't think having just Sony and Nintendo is great long term for anyone, they both have a monopoly in their respective niche.

Xbox lied and deceived the entire fan base, they acquired studios and kept telling people "we have games, just wait". and right as the games are lining up, they decided that they rather be multiplat and people wasted money on their console. I havent owned a Xbox since the 360 and likely will never own one again. I always thought my pc was WAY better since game pass ultimate had all the games I cared to play on pc. I also played Halo 3 and Reach for thousands of hours and love those memories. Im now 33 and still game quite a lot but not no multplayer. I would love to play Halo on my PS5 to get the trophies and dabble in the multiplayer again after many years. As for gears going over, I;m happy to hear that since Ive only played the first one and would love to play the rest since not all of the gears games are on pc.

Xbox is a side project they did essentially to put another egg in a basket that could maybe work out. If Xbox fails, yeah their are consequences for that but the companies life will move forward. The PlayStation brand however is legitimately 1/3 of the revenue Sony makes as a company, THATS a big deal. Sony NEEDS PlayStation to be a success which is why they don’t play around with it. And if you have all digital backwards compatible games, you can play on PC 2 so again. No reason to own an Xbox if it has no disk drive. Then it's literally just a game. Pass in digital backwards capability both of which could be on APC which you could hook up to the t. V. If as power it doesn't matter, developers will not use that power whatsoever unless there's no other competition. A.k.a. Release the Xbox before the next PlayStation. Developers are extremely lazy. They will develop for the market. Leader PlayStation, they might not even make a version of the Xbox for the next day. It's a good buy all those third party developers. I agree. I don't know what everyone's hang up with exclusives are. How do exclusives benefit the average consumer? Nothing. The only entity it benefits are corpos. Games are too expensive and exclusivity can no longer pay the bills. Sony realizes this as well. Besides, good software has ALWAYS been the focus, not the hardware. So how is it bad that someone can buy good software from where they want to play? Sony has already started this with PC and having their IP on Nintendo. They're making a new console. They make as much as Windows. I love the Series X. A larger net catches more fish. Putting your games everywhere makes more money. Xbox is in the best place it's ever been, more MAU's than Playstation and Nintendo. I'm happy other fans get to play Xbox games. Honestly I have been gaming on PlayStation since 2008 and I am sad about how the Xbox brand is dying. The reason is that I don't mind seeing other people enjoy their hardware. My old friend had an Xbox 360 and we exchanged consoles for a month and realised that Xbox has good games too but we were so invested in God of War to choose xbox over PS. I am getting bored with the cinematic single player games these days and if something like Concord worked, it would be amazing. But hey Helldivers 2 is great.

Sony was a leader in the $70 game, and the first generation where a console increased in price. If Xbox leaves the console market then I’m going back to PC. As Matt said, if MS was no longer going to make an Xbox console, I hope then Valve releasing one.

I'm fine with xbox being 3rd party, but I'll miss the controller. Sony with no competition will be absolutely horrible too. Xbox also isn't thinking what happens if Sony won't let them publish on their system.

No reason why they wouldn't. It's more money for them at the end of the day. They'd get a 30% cut from all the Xbox sales on the Playstation store.

It's a bad outcome for consumers without a doubt. Sony already has been consistently increasing their prices across the board. Compare controller prices between the two companies.

@ For sure, the lack of competition won't be a good thing for consumers. I guess if things get that bad then I resort to gaming on my PC primarily, with Switch 2 as the secondary option for Nintendo 1st party exclusives.

It's going to be great coming back to this in a year. Xbox will be fine. Also the idea that Nintendo and PlayStation won't ever do the same thing 😅 clearly all of you aren't paying attention to the choices that governments are making to closed platforms. It's time to grow up and start paying attention as adults. 😊 The idea that PlayStation Nintendo are exempt from some of the same rules that Apple and Google aren't. Who do you think these companies are? Lol 😅 Microsoft is not giving up Microsoft is an entire adult trillion-dollar company taking very close look at what the EU and our government is doing to Apple and Google and realizing that the future of maintaining a closed platform is a foolhardy venture and is getting waaaay ahead of the game. Their CEO does not care about keeping things closed. The idea video games will maintain closed ecosystems is something a child would still hold on to. Which is why steam is putting its OS on other platforms. You really think the United States government that's forcing tiktok to sell itself gives a single crap about console wars? Yea... This sucks. As a guy who really enjoys Xbox, Ima bit bummed. As a gamer though, this is a pretty sweet deal. I like how Microsoft wants to get their games out there for all gamers. The thing that really pisses me off is that Nintendo and Sony aren't following suit. Why is Microsoft the only publisher that wants to share their games? I've worked hard through the years... I'm able to game on all platforms. This isn't true for most gamers, and that sux. More people would play Xbox if Microsoft gave a s**t about their hardware. They don't push or advertise it. Sony can go screw themselves. Their business practices are anti-consumer. Why the Fonies don't see that is beyond me. It's not that I hate the PlayStation... I just hate Sony and their fanboys. Currently, it seems that the best place to game is on PC. If you can afford to buy or build a decent gaming rig... That's the way to go. With the exception of Nintendo, you get all the games. What are Ponies gonna do now that they are finally getting Xbox games. Hopefully nothing. I'm sick of the console war. I've never participated in it, but just hearing about it and watching it unfold grinds my gears. It gives gamers a bad name. Especially the Fonies. Doxing people on camera while they are in surgery, causing riots... I just want it to end. That's the only positive thing that I can think of that may come out of this situation.

Can't really talk about sony being anti consumer then defend Xbox, Xbox started the trend of paying to play online.....gamepass is the most anti consumer trash in existence Your bias is clearly showing , in what way is sony anti consumer.....raising the prices of games ? Well don't buy them and the prices will go down , that's consumer influence in action something that can't be done blindly paying for a subscription service

I think it would be really cool to see gears or Halo on another paltform like PS or Nintendo but i personally dont think it would be fair to give Playstation these titles in return for nothing..like if you are going to say hey heres Halo lets give Playstation fans the opportunity to experience the story of master chief through the MCC then in return it only seems fair to say well why cant we have something like God of war on the Xbox in return?

I don't think "Giving Up" is the right title. In my eyes, they are investing in their franchises, so they live on. If this is the way for Halo to live, so be it. More Players = More Money = More Halo

But yeah the ABK deal, along with Infinite launching feature incomplete, Redfall disaster, and the discourse around Starfield, has painted the largest target on Xbox's back, for Microsoft to shoot at. I hate where they are going, but I can't do anything about it 😔 this is the Sony show now......Microsoft gave them the gun and the rounds to load it with.

as a former Xbox loyalist, now PC man, I say the more the merrier. I love playing Halo Infinite online but the wait times can be excruciating over in the UK. Hopefully more PS5 players in the lobbies will help revive things. Seriously who cares what console the games are one so long as they’re good
