Hi, have just used your video as a guide to repair my son's Xbox. Was cutting out after 5 - 10 minutes of play. Did the usual of cleaning out all the crud and fluff from the fan and heatsink. Made little difference. Decided to take a punt at removing the heatsink and renewing the thermal paste. Used the silver 5 as you recommend. All back together and has been running for over an hour now with no problems. Thanks for the video. Excellent.

I enjoyed watching you, work, And you actually have a decent sounding voice. Very well done.

no comments? wow i know my one needed a thermal paste upgrade as i do pc and console repair thanks for informing me that i didn't need to use much thermal in which that was my own fault. i don't mind learning new things thank you.
@mpdavig7 жыл бұрын
You're welcome. Too much can even cause over heating. The ideal situation would be the radiator and die making direct contact without any space to transfer maximum heat. However, there is always slight uneven contact so thermal paste fills the tiny gaps but you don't want to increase the gap. With that said, Arctic Silver 5 spreads really well so even if you used too much the pressure should squeeze out the excess. I do this process for all my consoles now but it started when I had several GameStop refurbished Xbox One consoles have overheating issues. Either they were returned for this reason or GameStop changed the paste as part of the refurbish process. In any case they didn't use Arctic Silver 5 which solved the overheating issues.

got a one x and fallout 4 makes the fan howl a little for a bit and after a few hours the buzzy little fan kicks in real loud. rdr2 also does this only much faster like right from loading in to the world it will kick the fans up. not many other games do this including just cause 4 which from what I understand isnt graphically uncomplex either

I think I did something wrong. I think it might be with the X clamp. After cleaning and reapplying thermalpaste I put the heat sink back on. I also bent the x clamp back a little so there is tension. I used the pliers method to remove the clamp, all I did was repeatidly wiggled all corners of the clamp and then they started coming loose. Anyway so when the heat sink was back on it was kind of wobbly, I guess it's not supposed to be like that. And after I started the Xbox and played games I could have sworn the air coming out was hotter than before. But I thought it was more like it just breathed better, because of the dust removal. Today (2 months later) the Xbox fan spread increased for a moment after exiting Resident evil 3 and starting it again. This has never happened before since owning it from 2017. Any advice for the X clamp reapplication?

My xbox turns on and off as soon as I press the home button. It is about 3 years old. I went to the microsoft store to test the power brick which was not the issue. Could old thermal past cause this problem where the xbox shuts off automatically after turning it on within 1 second?

I now have a multi meter with a temperature probe but I didn't at the time of this video. I do know Arctic Silver 5 is the best stuff out there and I've been using it for years on everything console, PC, Mac, etc. This system was overheating regularly and hasn't since. All that said, I only do this if a system is overheating or I need to remove the heat sink for some reason since this does take a lot of extra effort.

what does the thermal paste do? does help the fan to make sure it doesnt explode/overheat?
@MrRockIsAwesome4 жыл бұрын
It helps transfer heat from the chip to the heatsink.
@terrorninja7 жыл бұрын
Did you heat that up with a heat gun
@mpdavig7 жыл бұрын
No, the heatsink should come off easy enough without needing to be heated up. The original OG Xbox was a bit different. The GPU heatsink was tremendously easier to remove after heating it up.
@terrorninja7 жыл бұрын
I wasn't talking about doing that to take the heatsink off the chip I was talking about doing a x clamp fix on the Xbox One Like You Do the old 360 or the 360 Slim
@mpdavig7 жыл бұрын
Dusty Wyatt oh, to be honest I've never heard of anyone doing an X-clap fix on an Xbox One or 360 S. The first year or two with the Xenon and Zephyr 360 boards would have been the relevant systems. Changing the thermal paste is something you do to any PC, Mac or Console where you need to remove the heatsink. Better thermal paste means reduced running temperatures and less risk of overheating. Overheating is usually the result of a thermal sensor and the shutdown will prevent any risk of damage.
@terrorninja7 жыл бұрын
I completely understand that cuz I've looked all over KZbin but I'm not seeing one person do a Reflow with a heat gun on an Xbox One Like You Do the 360 and the 360 Slim but I don't see why it wouldn't work it's all the same stuff if you look if you compare a 360 slim to an Xbox One side side by side with them opened you're looking at the same system just at the slim is compact any problems that you would have with the slim would pretty much be the same problem with the Xbox One
@terrorninja7 жыл бұрын
I bought this Xbox one that has an issue everybody keeps telling me it's the power supply I found out it wasn't the power supply it's inside the Xbox and I can't figure out where just the issue is when I plug in the power supply the power supply goes from Orange to White the Xbox gets into a mode where you can push the power button and it makes sound the eject button makes sound as well but there is no power light in the front of the Xbox now I've had the same issue with an Xbox slim and I was able to fix it somehow the Xbox one is not getting the full amount of the power from the power supply so that tells me that it's inside the Xbox it's not the power supply I have test it out my power supply of many Xbox Ones and it works perfectly fine but in order to run the power to make the set the power button makes sound in the eject button to make sound it's only 5 V and it's only 5 V for the power light in front of the Xbox to actually turn on if you take one wire out of the fan it becomes 12 volt but for some reason there's not enough juice going inside the system it has to be inside the Xbox not the power supply

M O I S T xll what do you mean by still doesn't work? The only item this process can solve is if your system overheats from time to time. You know this by random shutdowns and a message about why it shutdown on the next startup. Sounds like what you are trying to solve may be deeper than this.

Geez why do people STILL use that stupid spread method?!
@mpdavig6 жыл бұрын
What method would you suggest?
@mpdavig6 жыл бұрын
In case you have any interest in researching this. I've been doing the same method for years and there has been some interesting research on this: www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Thermal-Paste-Application-Techniques-170/ I'd say there isn't a perfect way of doing this but there are more and less effective ways of doing it. I still stand by the spread method. It takes more time but is just as effective as any other method.
@taffowst5 жыл бұрын
Just place a pea sized blob in the center, because pressed spreads it it's more even whereas this spread method can cause bubbles which affect thermal transfer.
@jamesbumgardner14693 жыл бұрын
@@taffowst a globe, of which a pea would be considered, pressed flat is a circle. Chipsets aren't circular lol truth be told, and reams of research back it up, it really doesn't matter which you use outside of the most extreme use conditions. Pea sized rarely attains full die coverage, but shows no reduction in thermal transfer between surfaces. Spreading attains maximum and "ideal" die coverage but shows no real improvement in heat transfer. It's just a point of contention in the community that's fun to argue over, but really doesn't make much difference. How you apply the heatsink to the surface though oddly enough has been show to matter slightly depending on paste application method, but hardly anybody does the sideways heatsink application. Its nearly universal to apply it in a straight down motion. Sideways mounting caused an isosceles shaped spread in the pea sized method and causes a "wave like" shift of paste in the spread method resulting in uneven heat distribution which can cause heat cycle stress and reduced heat transfer.
