I strongly disagree. Battletoads Arcade is good for what it is, and I'm glad that fans of the beat'em up genre have a Battletoads game they can thoroughly enjoy. However, Battletoads is known for having a variety of different styles of gameplay and that is a large part of what I love about it. Battletoads/Double Dragon has more beat'em up sections than the original Battletoads, but still managed to have a decent amount of variety. I want to see a lot of different Battletoads games without being boxed into a single genre. I do not have a passion for beat'em up games. They can be decent, but that's not why I play Battletoads.

It's a good game but definitely not ahead of its time. It was a late NES game that got ported to the big two 16 bit consoles, and the original IS pretty impressive for the hardware limitations

I mean, to be fair, it’s technically really well made art… but it’s such a radical departure from what the ’Toads have always been. I’d rather they kept that gritty, almost gross-out comic book look from before, but I’m fine with the new style for the sake of 2D animation. Especially when you consider that this game was probably made on a really low budget (because the BattleToads aren’t exactly huge names). It makes sense to simplify the style for the sake of something that’ll animate well and look good to a wider audience. Still, here’s hoping whatever new game drops (IF a new game drops) it goes back and refines the original direction of the series (in that case, it’d definitely be 2.5D). I’d rather see the BattleToads keep their distinct niche than try to seem mainstream and marketable.
