I've been playing RPGs since 1990, started with Phantasy Star on my Master System, and I must say Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has the best combat system ever made. Dynamic, rewarding, deep & complexe. This game is a 10.

With terrible and generic characters, bad game design that has problems with either being too easy or too hard with hideously overleveled enemies, and a story to fall asleep to, I’d say this game is a 6/10 at best.

Astonished Burter you really don‘t have a life do you? You‘ve gone into at least 3 comments on this video and on two of them you started a full on comment war. Everyone understands that you have problems with the game but you don‘t have to tell every person that loves this game the reason they‘re wrong. People have different opinions and that‘s just the way it is.
@BillTrinensTongue

@@tyloschsosas My 2 cents on this guy: 1-He didn't understood the combat system. You can kill everything, even 130 level foes being at 99. How do you achieve that? By understanding the battle system. 2-Characters are great. Story isn't mindblowing, but definitely not boring...unless you constantly skip cutscenes because you're too impatient. And the characters aren't generic...unless you particularly don't like animé-styled characters, and all seem generic to you. Criticism is ok. You're allowed not to enjoy a game. However, you can see by the adjectives this guy uses, how emotionnaly inolved this guy is about letting us all know that this game is overrated. That leads us to the 3rd option: cannot live unless the world adapts to him. A manchild. Again, criticism is more than ok...it's all about the tone. By his message you can tell that this is personal. Ulterior motives that probably have nothing to do with the game itself.

Edit 1: Everyone, ignore the kid in the replies (DarkSonic180) he isn't worth your time Xenoblade 2 is one of my favorite Switch games and my favorite game in general. Sure it has its slow start but I think that shouldn't hurt a game, I mean look at KH2 or TP. Anyway, my favorite thing in this game is the characters, I found each character meant something from the main party and I found 3 of the 5 villains great! However, I can't say the same for Torna DLC, I mean the characters in that game barley got any development or attention they deserved or needed. I mean look at Haze, she could have easily got more development to her and she needed it as well. In the game all we know about her is that she was Lora's mom finder, and has a ability that she only uses... What? Twice? To me, Torna failed in something that the original game excelled at. Anyway, I agree with everything you said.

I agree. I absolutely loved TP even though it gets a ton of shit for having a slow start, what people don't realize is that this slow start helps you bond with the characters before shit goes down, so you actually feel some emotion when something does occur. After all, who would care about saving someone you don't really know (e.g. Playing as Link in BotW, you didn't have any personal connection to the characters so it didn't really feel important).

As someone who's life was, to put blunty, fundamentally changed by the first game, I didn't really expect Xenoblade 2 to overtake it as my favorite game, I thought it had a slight possibility but I remember thinking to myself I wouldn't be suprised if it didn't. But wow this game absolutley blew my already high expectations out of the water, far surpassing the first game in my books. I think a big part of it is the message the story and characters portray, that of there always being good in the world no matter how dark things may seem. I didn't think it would but it managed to connect with me on a level far more than XC1's. I'm pretty sure I've seen this message before in other stories but the way Monolith has done it here in XC2 with it's excellent crafting of the characters and story completley overshadow every other attempt I've seen. Rex actually really heped here, I've never resonated more with a character and their life experiences as much as I have with Rex, he's easilly my favorite character in...anything really. I think a big part of it was my very unfortunate state of life at the end of 2017, so this is really exactly what I needed. There's really nothing in this game I don't like, even if there is, it's so unbelievably overshadowed by all the good parts of the game. In an interview Takahashi stated he wanted to make a game/story that inspired hope within people, it's unbelievable how well he accomplished that goal. He's really inspired me to strive towards that same goal in my work, something nothing has ever done for me before. I didn't really expect this game to have as much as an impact as it did on me, I think part of the reason XC1 had such a big impact was because of my relatively young age at the time of playing so I didn't think I'd get the same reaction out of XC2, yet I'm still feeling the effects of XC2's story almost an entire year after I've finished playing, just like what was with the case with XC1, yet to a greater extent suprisingly. I'm so unbelievably greateful that this game exists. The wait for Xenoblade 3 is gonna be a long one I feel ._.

Marco Brosato - Xenoblade 2. The characters are just overused archetypes with barely any development, at least the main characters. XC1 has a much stronger main cast of characters, with more development and better motivations.

@@jerryborjon Xenoblade (1) also consisted of your stereotypical JRPG cast. *spoilers ahead* The hero (Shulk, in 2 Rex), the sidekick-hero (Fiora, in 2 Pyra/Mythra), the sidekick-goof (Reyn, in 2 Zeke), the comic relief (Riki, in 2 Tora), the veteran (Dunban, in 2 Mòrag) and the "Surprise, surprise, I'm not actually (100%) human" (Melia, in 2 Nia), though you could argue that Zeke and Mòrag switch their roles at some point (especially in Heart-to-Hearts). I'm with you in that the first one sold the archetypes better and had the better relationship developments. The individual developments weren't better as in 2 though, in my opinion. My favourite character development was Prince Kallian's, and apart from that there are the same parallels as above: -Shulk/Rex acquire an absurd power, use it to save the world, and otherwise stay the same; - Fiora/Pyra/Mythra get tormented, reborn in the image of KOS-MOS (Monolith loves her) and share their power with Shulk/Rex; - Reyn/Zeke show that they're dependable; - Riki/Tora don't need no development, they're perfect as they are (they just happen to prove that throughout the story); - Dunban/Mòrag are just there to explain background stories; - Nia/Melia get the "unrequited love" treatment, but open up to the others.
@jerryborjon
@jerryborjon 6 жыл бұрын
Yannick Kuhn - I know that both games have a stereotypical JRPG cast, and I don’t consider it a bad thing for either game. Archetypes, stereotypes, and even tropes are supposed to be supplementary, pretty much stepping stones to help tell a story/develop characters. The problem is that XC2 didn’t develop their characters as much, at least not the main cast. While the cast of secondary characters in XC2 is pretty strong, the main characters could not be worse. Comparing Rex to Shulk, we see how little development the main cast in XC2 had. In XC1, Shulk pretty much becomes an anti-hero. He loses everything that would make him a hero by conventional standards. His charming personality is gone, his McGuffin was taken by the villain, the “power of friendship” seems to be useless, etc. He doesn’t know what to do, and even trying to kill Zanza could just result in an early death, even if they succeed. Fueled by revenge, fear, and a little bit of curiosity, Shulk and co. trek on to at least see if they can do anything. Even while fighting Zanza, it’s still unsure if they even have the ability to win against God. It wasn’t until Shulk saw how far his friends were willing to go, how despite the dire situation they still fought with complete confidence, that Shulk’s inner God awoke, with a little help from best boi Alvis of course. Meanwhile, I think they actually tried to develop Rex once with Vandham’s death. However, it was so badly written that who cares. He joins the party for 7 femtoseconds before dying, and the writers expected the player to care? That was what they tried to pass off for development. Even if this story element had been written better, Rex didn’t even change because of this. He’s still the exact same shithead he always was, except that the writers told us he’s different now. Mythra and Pyra’s development is pretty much the same as Rex’s in terms of quality. Mythra is just a generic tsundere that acts exactly how you think she’ll act throughout the entirety of the game, and Pyra is just a generic main waifu from some badly written harem anime. While both games start off with a stereotypical cast, XC1 actually bothered to develop all of it’s cast, while XC2 seemed to only care about the secondary characters.

This was my first Monolithsoft game and it has absolutely blown me away. Yeah there are some minor annoyances here and there but the overall experience has just been amazing and just so much fun. I enjoy finding out more things I enjoy watching the story progress, I enjoy talking to the NPC's and realizing as the game goes on that I'll understand so much more on a second playthrough. It took me over 90 hours to just get halfway through the story while doing some side quests and exploring but there's still a ton I haven't done even there. The music is phenomenal and the environments are some of the most beautiful and imaginative that I have ever seen, Leftheria especially is one of those places where my jaw just dropped and I was still for several minutes just taking in the view. Yeah you might say that getting the rare blades is a bit of a bother and I kinda agree but I mean they don't call them rare for nothing. Whenever you get one it's a great feeling and the added side quests tied to the blades are just really endearing and fun, it makes getting a rare blade so much better. People may have issues with the artstyle but I love it to bits, there's just so much more you can express with the this artstyle that makes it more believable since it doesn't cross as much into the uncanny valley. The funny moments become funnier and the serious moments become more serious, there are even subtleties in facial expressions that can be seen without being too obscure or too obvious. Also the fact that the whole world is so damn colorful really sells the idea that this really is a magical land. Yeah Rex's voice actor can't do heavy emotion but sometimes I just wonder how much is the voice directors role in all this as well. Either way I find the other voice actors to be really great. The idea of having different dialects for the different nations etc really made the world feel so much more alive. Also shout out to Welsh Nia, I never thought I could love a voice that much. Lastly the amount of game you get for the money in this game is just bonkers. Yeah I have spent an obscene amount of time in my numerous playthroughs of BotW but I could easily see myself spending just as much time if not more in this game and enjoying every bit of it.

I agree with basically everything you said. Seeing positivity for Xenoblade 2 always puts me in a good mood. Xenoblade 2 is my favourite game of all time for many reasons. It resolves every single flaw the original had, both in terms of writing and especially gameplay. I didn't like how in Xenoblade 1 the main characters became pretty much irrelevant after their arc, with Riki being the worst offender, as you could remove him completely and not lose anything. They were still good thanks to heart to hearts, but it was still annoying. It was really just Shulk's story. Also, in the first game, I feel the deaths are used more so as catalysts for character development, but usually the player has no real connection to the character which are killed, so any emotional value is often lost, save for a few exceptions. Also, Zanza is a pretty bland villain, a cliche "Ancient Evil God" with no real motivation at all. The big twist doesn't salvage him. His theme kicks ass though, so at least he has that going for him. Xenoblade 2 solves all of these. All he characters in the party stay relevant until the credits, and while there is disparity in their screen time, no one is forgotten. H2H here serve to build upon what the story introduced, not to compensate for something that's missing. Death these time hit a lot harder, since the characters get a lot more screen time before their demise. They are both emotional and functional to the story. All the villains in 2 are great too, thanks to the grey morality of the game. Every time a villain died, I either felt sorry for them, or glad that they could do harm no longer but at the same time pitied them. There is no real evil in Xenoblade 2. Jin especially is one of my favourite characters in any media. In terms of gameplay, 2 is just better in every way IMO. I liked both Field Skills and the simil-gacha system for Blades. Money now is actually useful. The equipment screen is much less crowded. And the battle system is a lot more satisfying to use. Also, they got rid of that BS mechanic that made me have to restart the final battle because I was like, 4 levels under the final Boss so all my attacks kept missing. That really killed my enjoyment of the final Boss. Quests in 2 are also a ton better, since all of them have some sort of story tied to them, so doing them is actually interesting despite being fetch quests for the most part. Blade Quests in particular are amazing. I don't think I have to say anything about the visuals and music, which are out of this world. I will mention however, how fantastic the cutscenes are. Incredible direction and writing on those, with animation that surpasses any other JRPG I've seen. They are mesmerizing. And Torna is just... incredible too. It enhances the main game's narrative and is a fantastic stand-alone experience at the same times. Despite being very short, it uses its time incredibly well, and it makes the ending devastating, despite knowing that it was coming. It also solves some gameplay problems the main game had. Xenoblade 2 also has a fantastic message of hope, which is handled incredibly well. This game really did change my life. I wouldn't be the same person if not for it. I am thankful for having experienced such a masterpiece. I doubt any game will ever resonate with me this much. It came as just the right moment, and delivered everything I could have wanted and more. I could talk for hours on end about this game, without getting tired. In fact, this is the second time I'm writing this comment, because of course KZbin crashed making me lose like 5 paragraphs. So this is actually a short version of what I was writing. Being concise isn't one of my talents.

I thought I was just getting too old for video games. I'm lucky to play a game maybe a few days a month, but I decided to get a Switch with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 for my 3 week trip to Japan last month. I must say, I have not played anything this engrossing in very long time. The gameplay aside, the music, the art style, the graphics and the world are beautiful. And despite the game's seemingly light-hearted appearance, the characters are fleshed-out, complex, and have motivations that embody various particularities of the human experience. It makes the characters highly relatable and puts the player in an emotional roller coaster which makes Xenoblade Chronicles 2 all the more memorable. I particularly love that they've touched on many philosophical ideas much in a dialectical manner and wrapped it in a form that can be understood even by teenagers. Overall, it was well planned, well thought. Lastly, the English voice acting was very charming, even if it's a bit weak at some points. It could have been perfect had the game's localization not been rushed for a December 2017 release. They've put so much effort into making this game as rich and captivating on so many levels. I am in their gratitude for providing me with a lasting experience which I almost forgot video games were capable of giving.

Maybe it isn’t the best game out there, maybe it isn’t a masterpiece, maybe there are so many other good JRPG and maybe, this game hasn’t changed anything in the industry... but I’m certainly sure that it changed my life. Is the best expirience I ever had with a videogame. I absolutly adore all of it, the characters, the story (the message it delivers), the comedy, the serious cinematics, the Titans, the battle system and of course the OST that has become my favorite one, as is the game itself. This game makes me feel truly happy. I played it in one of the worst and most difficult moments of my life... making me to become optimist and happy again after years of sadness. Sometimes a change does not have to be big to be meaningfull. Sometimes, all we need is just sit down and enjoy the beautifull little things like this, without worrying in so much else. We all are humans at the end and all humans want essentially the same: Just to be happy :) This is the last message this game gave me, one that I heard before but in which I never really belived or taken to practice. Until now, thanks to XC2. Remember to forgive the others and yourself too. Remember that we are not enemies, just different and with objectives that collide with the objectives of the others and with ours too. Thus, whenever you feel sad or angry for whatever reason... Remember to fight your war. Don’t forget (me) it.

Instead of the incredibly general “be happy even when others make you sad,” at least Naruto is about working hard despite the circumstances of your birth. It doesn’t matter if you’re born poor, or a minority, or with a giant death fox inside of you, you can still choose to work hard to achieve your dreams. It might be harder depending on your birth, but don’t let difficulty stand between your dreams and you. Meanwhile, Xenoblade 2 is about what that Fish Toy in every Wal-Mart sings about. “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” I think that’s what ignorant people tell people with depression to try to make them feel better, not realizing that they might actually be doing more harm than good.

Im truely amazed how great the game is.Great game design-Good graphic-AMAZING music and story-cool characters with good design and most of all-I love how dark and extreme the story gets and Jin...oh boy hes my favorite.His fightingstyle is epic and hes one of the only persons were EDGY actully is good.When he died i literally almost cried.And his battle theme...i like things that build up but his? Its the only one that fits and actully builds up mood if ya ask me.But i definitly enjoyed the game to the last. I just CANT understand how the hell this game is so underrated it has an amazingly big variety of characters and blades and the BEST themes i ever heared.Most game have 1-2 AMAZING themes a vew common and the rest-meh but XBC2 EVERY single theme sounds amazing i cant even decide which is my favorite its infuryating how underrated it is

Awesome review! I literally feel the exact same way. The OST, the characters, the combat, the story, the scenery (Uraya + Leftheria anyone?) and everything else is amazing. I really wish more people would look past the fanservice and give it a shot and experience the unique emotions and world of Xenoblade. I honestly feel like it's made me change my outlook on life, to be grateful our world isn't dying (and hopefully it stays that way) and that maybe we should be glad we eventually die, instead of holding onto so many memories we wish we could forget. I hope a 3rd is released that ties it all together :D Also was anyone else hell depressed after finishing the main game? (I was xD)

This game really took me by surprise somehow. While yes, I was excited about it pre-release and even pre-ordered (which I almost never do), I still wasn't as hyped for it as some other titles I've come across before...probably in large part to do with the fact that I was still "uninitiated". I discovered the Xenoblade franchise through X, but unfortunately never got to play it (no WiiU) so when I heard that a new Xenoblade game was coming out for the Switch I saw an opportunity to finally give this franchise a try as it looked really promising! I went in with the belief that this would be a good game and a new franchise to become a fan of...I had no idea that this would become my favorite game in the end... There was something about playing through it that brought back the childish wonder and joy that I had experienced with video games back when I was a little kid. Back then there wasn't a "gaming culture" per say. We played games for the simple joy of it as we were kids and that's what kids did lol I remember the first couple of real story based games I had ever played and how I had become so hooked on getting to the next cutscene as I was so engaged into it...there was a certain feeling associated with that that eventually grew a bit stale over the years as more and more games stacked into my library. The impact was far more dull...potentially due to the fact that games became more "gameplay" oriented over the years making the cutscenes seemingly less special and less important as "story" was made to be a lesser priority. XC2 brought back that infectious hook on progressing through a story with such a form of dedication and engagement. Every time I got to a cutscene I was beyond thrilled and couldn't wait to see what would happen next! I grew very attached to each of the characters to the point of really caring about them and what would happen to them as the journey progressed. I genuinely cared about them as if they were real (a bit loony sure but you know what I mean, I I'm sure many others can relate to similar experiences whether it be this game or another, or a tv show or movie). When I was away at work or couldn't play, all I could think about was getting through the day so I could progress further. The game fully consumed me into it and it was such a thrill! One moment that transformed this game from being a great game into an absolute work of art in my eyes was when I got to the end of Chapter 3. Up to that point my opinion had shifted from "good game" when first loading it up to "great game" as it was now a part of my daily life. To say the least, Vandham's death, that whole cutscene...damn that hit me so hard in the feels. That was something that I would have expected to happen perhaps towards the later portions of a game...especially considering that I legitimately teared up! The writing, the cinematography, the music...it was so well done! That scene was unexpectedly brutal to my feels and it made me even more excited for what was going to happen as the story continued. If they could do that in Chapter 3, then damn the rest of the story was surely going to be absolutely amazing and it certainly did not disappoint! All the events leading up to the very end were fantastic to experience...and DAMN did the end really sting before resurrecting your completely decimated heart! Got to say to that the ending song is just...WOW! What a great piece of music to end it all! The next day after Chapter 3, I decided to buy the Limited Edition version of the game along with the special pro controller. I have studied music production, cinematography, and story writing for some years now and this was such a treat! It's rare to find such a well refined combination in media these days where every aspect is of stellar quality. XC2 has more heart and soul than most other games that release these days and I wantedto thank Monolith for such a fine creation. You have not only a fan of your franchise, but also a fan of your company. Bravo, simply bravo! To this day, it is the only video game I have ever purchased twice...and I still have the original base version too XD ...oh and yes, I did order the deluxe version of the soundtrack from Amazon.jp too when it came out lol I couldn't help it! This game reminded me of the magic I had experienced with video games as a kid and its story left such a massive impact on me in such a personal manner that I will never forget... ...simply put, sometimes your favorite isn't what is objectively the best...but rather the one that left the greatest personal impact on you...

I'll confess that I haven't played the other Xenoblade titles; this is my entry into the franchise. Moreover, I'm only half-way through chapter 9; almost done the story, but not quite. In spite of that, I agree with everything you've said and can unequivocally say that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, if not my favorite. Unless the ending somehow turns out to be trash (which I doubt) I can say that everything here just hits the right notes for me, and they're pretty much what you pointed out here: great story, characters, soundtrack, design, RPG gameplay that's just so engaging, et al. It just all feels brilliant and to me, perfect. Not objectively perfect, but subjectively so! And I've only put in 60 something hours! This is without me methodically doing the side quests, New Game Plus, Torna the Golden Country, etc; there's still a lot of game to go before I'm done with this. So yeah, I have no idea how many more hours I'll end up sinking into the game; it'll probably end up being over 200, just like you. Still, if that ends up happening.... I don't picture myself having any regrets :)

Great video. I love both games, the first XC and this XC2. I didn’t play many games in the last 10 months as I spent almost 400 hours on the series. I’m currently Torna for the second time. I really hope I could play XC and XCX on the switch next year. As much as love this game, it has few problems in my taste. There has too many fan service and sexy girl designs. The map is not easy to understand, I wish it shows which part of the Titan I was actually navigating. I was only realised that the playable part of Mor Adain was on the left shoulder of the Titan when I was on the World tree. And I still haven’t got all the rare blades! But I love this game!

The fanservice does create an unnecessary barrier to entry, it makes it very easy to write it off as "just another dumb anime game" & I could've done with Brighid not having cleavage literally all the way down but it's still my absolute favorite Switch game. Even if the gen 8 Pokemon game blows me away next year I don't think it'll top this 300+ hour epic & it's absolutely phenomenal NG+ & Season Pass features.
