So, I grew up bilingual in a place where most people are monolingual and growing up my mom (who is also bilingual) told me "never ever talk sh!t about someone in front of them because you think they dont understand your language. You have absolutely no idea what languages people speak based on what they look like." I took it to heart. Stuff like this makes me realize my mom was right.
@TheOReport19949 ай бұрын
100% percent agree! I worked in customer service at Macy's in the women's shoe department. Even if someone's English wasn't good, I'd try my best to communicate with them and help them, but I can count numerous times where I'd try to communicate with people who clearly did speak English as a second language, but spoke in their native tongue to make my shift harder; insulting me directly to my face because they knew I couldn't understand their language. but I've always been really good at reading body language, and believe me, you can tell when someone is insulting you while smiling, looking you directly in the eye, knowing full well you don't speak their language. Unfortunately, I don't have an ear for language, BUT I can 9/10 times peg the language, and I would ask them if they're speaking ----- language. Surprised, they'd generally ask me how I knew, and I'd tell them that I can generally identify the language by the cadence and musicality of their speech. I could never imagine talking shite about someone in front of them, even if I knew they didn't speak English. The complete discourteously astounds me.

Yeah especially considering he has a perfect accent. If I heard someone talking with a perfect English accent, I would immediately assume they were born and raised in an English speaking country. I guess the difference is that it's much less common to see other ethnicities living in China compared to in America, Canada, Australia and the UK.
@jordanledoux19711 ай бұрын
If you are living in America, there's no one that "looks American". A lot of Americans have European ancestry, but somewhere around 40% don't, so in America MOST people are going to assume that you are American until there's evidence otherwise. Similarly, in America, you meet every conceivable "mixed" ancestry. You become used to seeing lots of different mixed ethnic backgrounds. We can pick out those backgrounds from features, sometimes, because we have more experience seeing them. But countries like China or Japan are almost entirely ethnically homogeneous. A person there has very little experience seeing people that are not part of the monoculture of their country.

There is a definite difference when Xoima and this your man approach shops and stands. In all the videos I watch on this channel the vendors may say cheeky things in Chinese not knowing he speaks Chinese, But for this other young man I have heard them quote wrong prices and even say rude things not knowing he understands them. This video was very telling..and not in a good way. 😢

@@Jess-737 I remember Laosha well. RIP to a very kind man💕. It's wonderful he didn't experience that, but this young man is and this young man was raised in China. He was very cool about it but on some level it has to get to you.

It’s even more sad because he actually looks part Asian.

This is one of your best videos. Please, make more videos with June and Vincent. You need to come to Australia and go to the Chinese areas like Carlingford.

He's very obviously half chinese, but I definitely relate to the feeling. No one can ever tell I'm half native.

There is something about breaking down language barriers and making that human connection that makes me smile and laugh every time I watch your videos. Your friend is so genuine and made this video very enjoyable .

As a French, I can attest that June seems to be fluent in everyday French, even if he has a foreign accent. But I could clearly hear that his syntax and vocabulary are natural (not like mines in English, for example).
@Liwaj42 Жыл бұрын
also he's an African-French speaker. I don't know if there's a difference in accents, but I would guess so
@JeanChordeiles Жыл бұрын
@@Liwaj42 : Well, I'm used to hear different African accents in French and I don't think his foreign accent is African. And I don't know how much French he speaks, as he only used everyday sentences (from France, without African expressions), but that seemed pretty fluent to me.

@@JeanChordeiles On an unrelated topic, does Gims/Maitre Gims rap/sing with an accent? I'm slowly learning french, but I love his music. Just wondering if the contractions that he uses are normal outside of music.

honestly out of this whole video the thing that amazed me by far the most is that the guy didnt speak english at all until 16, the guy sounds dead native. mental

Him moving to America at 16, but able to have this accent is crazy

Yeah, he sounds like a native New Yorker (even though he isn't) because the Northeast of China has similar accents to the Northeastern US. Both accents have similar sounds.

Wow, amazing how close you guys became with a stranger and beyond just normal opening doors you get when they hear you speaking their tongue. Amazing. This was something even more new though. Amazing. June too is such a cool guy and interesting story. Thanks xiaoma

This is your best video by far! Please include June in more videos, he has such a cool personality when he's bantering with the street vendors! This combo of multiple languages and 2 different-looking "foreigners" blowing people's minds is gold!
