[CORRECTION] Well, the bad news is that I'm an idiot -- but the good news is that you CAN indeed set a double-click-power-to-camera shortcut on the Xiaomi 13 Pro. Reason I didn't see it: it's in Settings > Additional Settings > Gestures, instead of in the actual camera app settings (where I'd expect it to be). MrMobile regrets the error, but thanks to all who called this out!

13:00 there is also another way Michael. On Oppo at least: Screen-off gestures. Just draw a circle on your sleeping screen, it launches the camera instantly. You just have to set it up in settings first coz it's not on by default. I use the feature on my super budget Realme where I also draw a "V" shape to start the flashlight. It lets you also map a M, W, upside down V as well as left right up and down swipes to launch other apps and functions. It works 98% of the time on my cheap device so on a flagship it will be every bit as reliable as a button. And remember you regularly change phones. A heavy photo taker using that power button method on one device exclusively for four years: yeaaah that's not gonna end well, it will definitely wear out. Or maybe you did try screen-off gestures when they were still new and you found the feature buggy and unreliable but trust me, today it's pretty damn good. The learning curve is also not that steep, I took to it like a duck to water. Please give it a try next time you use an Oppo/Realme/Vivo phone, I believe the feature is a mainstay on many devices from the BBK group - hell maybe even OnePlus uses it now.

Xiaomi also does the volume rocker double tap, but only when the screen is locked. The settings screen is extremely complicated to navigate.

I do miss carting around a "proper" camera, sometimes, but every time I take one on a jaunt - be it for event coverage or some simple street photography - I am reminded of why I don't, anymore. It's simply much less easy to position yourself for good shots in crowded environs, or to covertly take snaps on the street. The only things I've shot in recent years that I would consider carting around everywhere are compacts like the Ricoh GRIIIx and the Sony RX100. Cameras you can pocket as easily as... a phone. And both cost as much as a flagship phone.

This video was such a roller coaster for me !! Agree: first time in my life I’ve ever looked at a phone portrait and went wow!! But then: it was the Xiaomi which wowed me. The 50mm look with the softness! I don’t get it why manufacturers don’t implement the portrait on the zoomin camera. Anyone who’s shot portraits will tell you that the oppo looks like a 24mm f0.00002 lens. Physics denies such wide angles to have bokehs like that. The Xiaomi with its zoomed in look replicates the trusty nifty fifty 50mm f1.4 Agree: more than anything, photography is about creating the story, projecting the mood! These intentional gimmicks like the film stocks and lens replicas go a long way towards that! Most pro photographers use filters to desharpen photos nowadays - these filters are what phones need, not 2000mpeg sensors!
