You cant invent new chords, Mike did some wicked stuff choosing extensions and inversions that had a really nice way of working in context with each other and used some dischordant sounds that resolved well but.. you can't invent chords. You can be creative with chords, you can be inventive with the way you relate them to the surrounding chords even, and Mike did all of that and its no less impressive than 'inventing' a chord if that was possible. You can't invent chords in the same way you can't invent sums, you just put numbers or notes together and they add up to a factual answer.

Mike had to come up with entirely new chords for the acoustic version bc the voicing on the studio version just wouldn't work on an acoustic guitar. So in addition to being inventive in all the ways you explain, he completely changed the progression and goes a different direction than the bass line to boot. Therefore, I doubt many would object to me using the word "invent" where I did. Also, don't think of "invent" in this case as something you should get a patent on. I can think up some unorthodox jerry-rigged "invention" to fix the door in my bathroom, but my neighbor might be doing the same exact thing. Doesn't make me any less proud of having thought of it myself.
