Something funny about your trouble with preservative, in french (préservatif) it is use for both. You can use it for extending the life of food, but also to protect against pregnancy. An other word use for preservatif, against pregnancy, is condom.

Sorry but no. Préservatif (Fr) = condom, period. Stuff related to food are "conservateurs".

Heya ! French person here to talk about Pandémie/Pain de mie and April's fish : So, I never thought people could confuse the two but it's quite evident hearing it^^ So of course Pain and Pan aren't pronounced the same, Pain is kind of prononced like the english Pain but you forget about the N, but the biggest tell is de/dé : De is pronounced Deuh and Dé is pronounced liek Day but you forget the greek I. For April's fish I do not know the originin, like at all, and it ain't really a hollyday, there's no "celebration" kind of like Valentine ? It's just a day for pranks (especially when we're little) for example my Brother cut and hid the "ticket" sewn to a cloth that make malls detector ring. He hid in one of my vestmany pockets and it took me several weeks before I found what was going on. And Yes, there was a little fish drawn onto the ticket.

Native Spanish speaker here. To be fair, Embarazado(a) does mean embarrassed, but it is pretty much never used, usually opting for avergonzado or apenado. What is used though is embarazoso (adjective for embarrassing), which is still sometimes used. That being said, don't go and said you're embarazado because people will think you're pregnant (and maybe crazy) And also, in Spanish we say both I griega & Ye, and also we call the normal i I latina, when we want to differenciate between the two.

When I first learnt the word «pregnant» I thought it was like German «prägnant». And I thought it means that the woman mentioned in the example was annoying or something.

HAHAHA when I walked the Camino the number of times I apologised by for the bad Spanish by stating that I was very pregnant is impossible to count. This made me feel mildly less stupid (thankfully, I'm not embarrassed about it anymore as I realised halfway through the trip. I'm over it now.)

I speak 7 languages and I don't consider myself a polyglot. The magic 2 digit number starting at 10 is where subjectivity I believe one can be considered a polyglot. Though people do claim me to be a polyglot I believe that I won't achieve this until I add 3 more languages. I start Connacht Gaelic today coincidentally which is the language of my fathers heritage. I plan to also learn Catalan which I understand but only speak a limited amount of but is an easy achieve because of its mutually intelligibility with Spanish. Also Galician is an easy achieve with Portuguese which is basically Portuguese with a Spanish pronunciation. Also I plan to learn Sicilian which is similar to my language from Italy, Uaštaréule. Being this language is also mixed with Spanish I do understand quite an amount of Sicilian. I'm 38 years old so I am hoping by the time I am in my 60's I speak 15+ languages.

hey, native greek here. quick correction: the greek y sounds closer to the slovanian than the german. its the letter "ύψιλον" where both ύ & ι are pronounced the same (with the first one being stressed, like the spanish accent mark/tidle ) the sound they make its a clean "ee" as in keep. the letter ψ makes the ps sound like when you want to get the attention of a cat (pspsps) 😂😅. the rest of the letters are λ,o & ν which make the l (L), o & n (a clean "o" and an "n" as in the word on ). for those who can read spanish the pronounciation would be "ípsilon" .

Nice, that makes me remember a question I've always had since our (Spanish) etymology class, How do you write the u sound? I've seen something about the ου diphthong, but I never got a clear answer. Or do you just don't have that sound. Anyways, I always found Greek really interesting, I already know the letters, and I want to one day learn it.

@@genio2509 haha, to summarize, the vowel sounds are the exact same as the ones in spanish, i e a o u (and stresses/accent marks are similar too). But we do have some more vowels for the same sounds: i: ι, η, υ, ει, οι (and in ancient greek there is also the: υι) e: ε, αι a: α o: ο, ω u: ου (which does indeed consist of two letters) and dont get me started with the stresses... í: ί,ή,ύ,εί,οί é: έ,αί á: ά ó: ό, ώ ú: ού coming back to the "ου" you can split it into "o" & "υ" by adding the german.... ü. "οϋ" now has the o-ee sound like the word oyster. soo ου & ού : make the (spanish) u sound όυ & οΰ : make the oy(ster) sound, basically two seperate letters ¡bonus! there are plenty of diphones that are similar to the ου (spanish u) though not as complex because vowels arent included (mostly). μπ : b as in bee ντ : d as in deal τζ : j as in jar γκ or γγ : g as in great and some that work in weird ways or are kinda rare. i swear it makes sense eventually XD

Ga, go and gu don't work like that, but just the normal g. Like on Pingüino (penguin), but not in Paraguas (umbrella) because that's an A. But also then, how do you write the OU sound? ωυ, οου? or something else, like a punctuation mark.

@@genio2509 Right, actaully i do speak spanish (bueno... todavía estoy aprendiendo) pero i reffered to the dots on the ü as german because i think thats where it originates from (its called umlaut/diaresis had to search it).anyway, to answer your question you can think of the "ου" as a singular letter that, as with any other vowel, can also be stressed ου or ού. Now in greek i cant think lf a word that has the sound "o-u" perhaps there is a loanword... so i guess you can say we dont really have that sound (we do but also dont), at least not in regular words. in case we do need to write it (in names) it would be the ου as one letter and then one of the 2 letter for the o sound (ο, ω) so: οου / ωου and of course they can be stressed. *My understanding is that you speak spanish so the rest of the o,u,i etc that are written with latin characters will reffer to their sound in spanish* with that said, here are the possible combinations that can make the (spanish) "ou" sound : οου or ωου : makes the sound ou , unstressed (meaning that the word is stressed somewhere else) όου / ώου : óu οού / ωού : oú and the rest are just for fun but are very weird as have double o οοϋ / ωοϋ : ooi , unstressed (notice the diaresis to break the vowel "ου" into two ο & υ) οοΰ / ωοΰ : ooí οόυ (not οόϋ because the accent mark stresses the o and therefore the diaresis is assumed) so, again: οόυ / ωόυ : oói όοϋ / ώοϋ : óoi for all the above when a none-greek word is to be written with greek characters, it is very unlilely for the versión with the "ω" (btw this is called omega, Capital: Ω ) to be used due to the fact that none-greek words written in greek must be written in their simplest form which is to say with ι,ε,α,ο,ου (and not any of the others η, υ, οι, ω, αι ..etc.). the "αι" which has the same sound as the ε (spanish e) follows the same principle/logic because its a vowel that consist of two. αι : e , unstressed αί : é άι : ai or ay (given that the "i" in spanish is a weak vowel and isnt normally stressed when slongside with a strong vowel (o,a,e) which is to say putting an accent mark on the making it : "ái" is ... redundant(?) ) sooo άι : ai, ay (or ái/ áy ... XD) again stress unnecesary because its assumed. therefore "άϊ" is wrong αΐ : aí (can be written in more ways)

On the last part about the accent ái: I don't think there is a word that requires it, but if it were for names or something like that, it just has to follow the rules, on which, only one vowel in the word can not have the accent. So if it was something like (I'm inventing) Lagais, following the rules it should be Lagaís (3 syllables) or, Lágais (It shouldn't have the accent there because it ends in s) which would theoretically leave the Lagáis with the accent mark. But I think in every word it either falls in the empty slot, or is forced as a hiatus, so the i or u would take the tonic syllable.
