English still has some subtle gendering of nouns in that vehicles, especially ships, are referred to as 'she'.

This comes as a surprise to many english speakers when such a 'macho' ship such as a battle ship is properly referred to as 'she'. As a docent on a WWII museum ship, I really enjoy speaking proper english.

hello there really liked your video. there are a few things I noticed while you were trying to pronounce some latin word like piscina. In classical latin every charakter is pronounced and "C" is always pronounced like an unaspirated "k" [piskina]. to the things about grammatical gender its always funny that people assume that people first came up with the concept of grammatical gender and then the word. In reality grammarians were just like: "Hey these words have a distinctive pattern (endings, suffixes etc.) that match the patterns we use to differentiate between people of different sexes! so lets call this one masculine and this feminine" "But sir there is another pattern that isnt used in both what do we call it?" "Neuter!" " "Genius!" I think "gendering" makes sense especially for languages that use a "root-stemm-suffix-system" like many of the indo-european languages and proto-indo-european itself, because it doesnt need to invent completely different word to describe something e.g. you have the root "luth-" [not from a real language just pulled out my ar*e]. luth- has the meaning of "free". with this you can now create a new word that transferes its meaning into: a living person, an object, and an abstraction/ philosphical phenomenon; for that we use the suffixes: -os, -on, and -a respectively. So we'll have: luth- = free luth-os = free person/ beeing --> citizen luth-[r]-on = town-hall/ or parliament [pic your poison] luth-[i]-a = freedom as already mentioned the advantage of such a sytsem is that you can transfere the meaning and/or purpose of a root into the categories very easily without needing to construct a compound-word or a completely new word entirely. best example is the word luthron which if we brake it down into its parts it would mean [free] and [object] --> object of/ for the free. the downside of course is, its very much dependent of context you just have to know that the [free]-[object] is supposed to be a bulding i.e. the town hall. the other way around tho the word town hall describes the object itself more accuarately i.e. a hall in a town but its purpose/ meaning is heavily dependent on context.

Classical latin in the anglosphere does the hard "c" sound but continental europe trains with a softer "c" due to the child languages like italian(right next to slovenia) and french, like ecclesiastical latin

Then there’s the word “shag.” When in Thunder Bay, you might get asked to buy a shag ticket for around $5 or see advertising to hold a shag at a facility. While shag may mean many things in other parts of the world, here in Thunder Bay the word shag means only one thing-it is a fundraising party, a celebration, to raise money for a couple about to be married. The word takes the first two letters of “shower” (bridal shower) and last two letters of “stag” (bachelor party) and combines them for shag. This has caused great confusion to visitors from the UK I have been told by several French speaking people, that the gender of an item is linked to whom the item is made/used for/by. Also that a crowd that is all women, is a 'female crowd', however if there is even a single male in the crowd, it is becomes a male crowd. (Oh, and I have been informed that (again, in French) that a vagina is masculine.) There are traces of gendered terms in English, regarding the genders themselves. Man is the ungendered word for an adult human, woman that we still use, is a female adult human, wereman (that we don't use anymore) was an adult male human. Pre-adults were called 'girls', males were 'knave girls' and females were 'gay girls' (it does seem to suggest where certain modern terms may have come from, I'd have to say.) 'boy' means servant, (hence the use of 'boy' in reference to slaves in the southern USA. Were-wolf / wolf-man rather falls into place too. Also poking something of a hole in the (somewhat forgotten trend now, thankfully) of replacing in words that contain 'men' in them, with 'person', to make it (supposedly) 'non sexist'. (that is it's own rabbit hole, I'd have to say) I am, of late, (after watching another of your videos, as it happens) very curious what speakers of gendered languages do, regarding the whole neo-pronoun situation, as it would need to saturate into everything . . . like how you refer to the belongings of a person who identifies as bug-self . . . I was curious if it would act as an 'antibody' against the spread of such ideas. Sorry to take up so much space in the comments . . . I fear I do tend to the verbose, from time to time. Thank you for all your wonderful videos! If you keep making them, I'll keep watching them. :)

"The table" in italian is "il tavolo"(male) while in venetian is "a toea"(female). I've never think about this gender contradiction before, that's fun. And about the English unspeakable terms I have the example of "restroom". The first time I heard that noun I imagined those people taking a nap near the toilet😅 Nice video, thank you!
