Many foreigners who are not familiar with Chinese culture understand this game only in terms of gameplay, overlooking its underlying story. This cultural difference leads to varied evaluations of the game. For example, there is a scene where the protagonist, the Destiny Character, encounters a mural depicting Wukong paying respects to his master, Bodhi Patriarch. Many Chinese players feel a deep resonance and can't help but stop to admire it. In the cold-toned scene, the warm light represents Wukong's most beautiful moments. It’s only as he matures that he realizes Bodhi Patriarch is his true and only master, who named him, taught him how to be a person, and imparted his skills without seeking anything in return. Despite knowing Wukong's wild nature, Bodhi Patriarch never thought to control him with a golden hoop. We know that Sun Wukong can transform into 72 different forms, yet no matter what he becomes, we can always recognize him as a monkey. When he dons a Taoist robe, his demeanor takes on an ethereal quality, reflecting his imitation of his master. This makes me wonder if Wukong is reminiscing about those carefree times spent with Bodhi Patriarch, where he felt loved and cared for. Wukong has no parents and no name; he was timid and afraid when he first met Bodhi Patriarch. Even when Wukong misbehaved during his learning, Bodhi Patriarch treated him with understanding, never scolding him. At most, he would lightly tap Wukong on the head. In Bodhi Patriarch's Lingtai Mountain, Wukong was never the eldest disciple but rather a mischievous younger brother, proudly showcasing his newly learned spells to his older brothers, who adored him. When Bodhi Patriarch was upset, the older brothers would secretly pull Wukong away, fearing he would be reprimanded. Bodhi Patriarch watched as Wukong learned many things under his guidance, smiling with the pride of all fathers who hope for their children's growth. He understood that Wukong had a mission to fulfill and would have to face it alone. Although Bodhi Patriarch was reluctant to let Wukong go, he had to release him. Despite sternly instructing Wukong not to tell others that he was his master, Bodhi Patriarch always cared about him. When Wukong was surrounded by countless celestial soldiers and ultimately trapped under Five Finger Mountain by Buddha, Bodhi Patriarch did not blame him. Instead, he would change his appearance each year to celebrate Wukong's birthday, helping him groom his messy hair and watching over him, feeling heartache for his disciple. In Chinese mythology, one day in heaven equals a year on earth, so for Bodhi Patriarch, he could visit Wukong every day. Later, when Wukong made a mistake and knocked over the ginseng fruit tree owned by Zhenyuanzi, he was given three days to revive it. Wukong searched everywhere among the gods he knew but found no solution. In desperation, he went to find Bodhi Patriarch, only to discover that he was not there. Wukong, who had not cried in five hundred years while trapped under the mountain, broke down at the thought of Bodhi Patriarch saying he would never see Wukong again. He curled up into a small ball, ultimately causing Bodhi Patriarch's heart to soften, and he helped his disciple out of trouble. Hearing his master's voice rejuvenated Wukong, as if he were reborn. Yes, even someone as powerful as Sun Wukong, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, has his soft side. Only in front of Bodhi Patriarch can Wukong be a carefree and happy little monkey. In the storyline involving the false Monkey King, Wukong says, "If my master were here, he would definitely recognize me." In Bodhi Patriarch's eyes, Wukong is merely a playful little monkey, a clever and lovable disciple, never the "bad monkey" others describe. Thus, a single mural can convey these stories without any animated scenes, allowing us to grasp its significance. This exemplifies how cultural differences influence perception. In "Black Myth: Wukong," many similar stories unfold, and just the appearance of a character brings forth numerous narratives. This is why some people deeply appreciate the game, while those unfamiliar with Chinese culture may not enjoy it as much.

25:38 The knucklehead thing is not a mistranslation, is just because the pig in the book represents the basic primal desires or 'seven emotions and six desires' of a person, essentially our base instincts. As a result, he often messes things up because of his need to sleep, eat, have sex, and so on. Sometimes, he's basically just an asshole. On the other hand, the monkey represents a person's spirit, intelligence, and creativity. That hundred eye Taoist master bs second phase, it’s actually the result of dev trying to be lore accurate. In the original Journey to the West. That hundred eye guai’s second phase shoots out rays of lights from his eyes and those lights restrained Wukong’s movements. Wukong couldn’t pass through those lights, and they were giving him pain. (Wukong is nearly unkillable) so instead of grinding through the pain and fight him toe to toe, wukong asked roaster god (owner of the golden needle) for help.

The reason the secret item to counter final boss in each chapter is actually originated from the Journey To The West novel. They were all previously defeated by these items in the novel. This part of the game is super lore accurate in a way.
@AWanderingSwordsman2 ай бұрын
You really did yourself a disservice by not doing the true ending boss before this. By FAR the best boss in the game but also by far the toughest and healthiest. The segments after the fight are so fuckin cool as well. And yeah, it's so hard it makes yellow loong look like a tutorial enemy. For reference, yellow took me 9 attempts, secret boss took me like 50, consort radahn took me 15. This boss is actually one of the most cracked bosses I've ever fought. There's also so much cool dialogue and counters. He doesn't just counter 1 thing, he counters EVERYTHING. Dodges your charged heavies, reflects your immobilize back onto you, dodges your unveiling strike and counters with owl strike, counters your transform with his own transform that cancels yours if it hits and even if you dodge it he can still instantly knock you out with eye lasers if those hit you. The thing is, he doesn't just counter you, he reacts verbally to what you do. If he reflects immobilize he doesn't even hit you while you are frozen, he just berates you verbally. He has unique dialogue talking about each of your transforms. Also, even though he CAN counter everything, you can counter his counters and still get use. He dodges your charged heavies, but not if he's in the air. He dodges unveiling strike, but not if he's in a combo. He has moves that can cancel your transforms but you can dodge them. The only thing truly not good is immobilize. ALSO theres solid uses for virtually your whole melee kit, even the staff twirl. Unrelated to that but I don't know shit about journey to the west and this story made no fuckin sense. They kept talking about people and places and events that I just never heard of. The true ending just left me confused. All the story stuff seemed cool but basically unrelated to anything I was doing outside of chapter 4. Didn't stop me from enjoying the game and the presentation of the story, but I got pretty much nothing out of that aspect. I also do think combat does end up feeling a bit repetitive against most enemies except transforms which is honestly a crazy amount of movesets to lock behind something most people will only engage with like 20% of at most. Spear light combo also kinda jank between hits 3 and 4.
@malvarado9912Ай бұрын
never seen journey to the west until post end game. Gotta say, I think that's an issue with you paying attention to the game. You learn a majority of information you need to appreciate a lot of areas at least a bit. in the first are you understand the mountain was wukongs domain and now it's in disarray. The bear clearly knows who you are and even calls your great sage then correcting down to young sage. thus you learn wukong was called the great sage. In the second area it seems like the rat knew wukong and maybe even fought him before. because he seems to have a bit of a grudge against you. In the third area very clearly yellowbrow is trying with you and once more the legacy of wukong follows you. the 4th I interpreted as showing wukong is not a hero as we may have been lead to believe. we see the desolation left in his wake. Again in the 5th lots more desolation as somehow we damaged the bull kings family. Then a lot was explained in the end of chapter 6 and the true ending definitely can be confusing but at face value I saw us getting his memories. Us inheriting the mantle, then it looked like maybe we were the second wukong that was leaving the room with weapons.
@AWanderingSwordsmanАй бұрын
@@malvarado9912 yeah but "this guy knows us" "this guy maybe fought wukong before" is not sensical. HOW did he know us and why is it important to my character (who is not wukong)? Why am I dying at the start of chapter 2 but can get revived? Hell, what even happens between chapters? Why does my character want to collect the relics? Despite these people knowing wukong, I still don't know much about wukong except that maybe he was an asshole except they showed like 2 very different versions of the bull king stuff that were happening at different times or maybe they didn't happen at all and somehow the bullking is super big now and all wukong's friends betrayed him and got a piece of him (the relics) but maybe not? Like I just have no idea which information I can trust or why it matters to destined one or what wukong even wants to do with his revival. How do I know boar guy with the rake who is clearly best buds with us? It's not a coherent narrative without past information. You can glean some info, but it's without context.

This is only semi-related to our beloved Charlie’s video, but please… beware of people that say negative things about any game from or affiliated with China. So much rhetoric is non-generic and forced . There’s a political and commercial agenda that is not rooted in righteousness or morality, it is simply disguised as such. The truth is, many organizations and people simply don’t want anything Chinese to succeed unless it serves their agenda. So kudos to Charlie for being honest, brave, nonjudgmental, and to respectful of Black Myth Wukong. After all, it’s non just a “Chinese game” or a “Chinese Story”. It’s a game, telling a story. Chinese people aren’t just Chinese, they’re people. We need more unity and less division. I’m a white guy, an American, and I’m excited as heck about Black Myth Wukong.

Really appreciate your integrity and openness. Sadly, too many people in the West would simply repeat the same political propaganda that perpetuates sinophobia. In the case of Black Myth: Wukong, because of its vast popularity, the truth about the so-called "controversy" came out quickly thanks to many supporters who voluntarily defended the game developers, so the smearing campaign did not work. However, there are many other cases wherein the mainstream outlets just pile on whatever invented accusations against China as if it is a proven fact (like the Xinjiang genocide narrative) without even hearing the other side of the story. Although the Chinese government and many Chinese companies have obviously done problematic stuff, China does not deserve many of the attacks, especially the baseless ones (the same goes for Chinese and Russian propaganda against the US).

@@thefourthrabbit9516 agreed, 100% I believe speaking out about such things is most effective when done with integrity and polite, mature dialogue. It’s far too often that reactionary sensationalism takes hold, and propaganda thus spread via hate and negativity. In fact, it’s literally the M.O. of many public relations campaigns. That is, to utilize public outrage. It’s easy to fall prey to. Who doesn’t want to stand up for what’s right? Hence, why I mentioned the skewered perception of righteousness and morality. Thank you, as well. I will sleep a little more soundly knowing that I’m not alone in my opinion, and that others are working against such phenomena.

When discussing this topic it's very, VERY important to draw a distinction between talking about China the country, and Chinese the race. Unless you're just quite frankly racist, Chinese people, as is people of Chinese descent, are not the topic of discussion, but rather Chinese culture and government. When people say "Chinese people always fucking cheat in videogames!", it's... not wrong? But people say it for the wrong reasons. A lot of the time, people say it to be racist, but it's not because of their race, it's because of Chinese culture. There's a very predominant "the ends justify the means" lesson that's instilled in most Chinese people. Like, people FROM China. Not people who are ethnically Chinese. That being said, I personally haven't actually seen anyone ragging on Black Myth Wukong for being Chinese. If someone has a problem with the game being Chinese (in an ethnic sense. modern China has no bearing on the story) then that's a racist viewpoint. But let's not act like China as a country isn't flawed, and majorly so. If you want to get an idea for how much kool-aid Chinese regime supporters drink, I suggest browsing r/Sino. Upsetting place, really.

I respectfully disagree. I've played and beaten both God of War and God of War Ragnarök and Black Myth: Wukong bosses are DRAMATICALLY harder than anything in either one of those games. Wukong bosses are insanely fast and aggressive (Tiger Vanguard). I don't know how anyone could fight Tiger Vanguard and Erlang true ending bosses and come to that conclusion?

The yellow wind sage really is the boss that made me realise how much the devs wanted you to finish the obsession before fighting the final boss because the item you get by finishing it makes the boss 10 times easier. For those who aren't aware, getting the item allows you to just disperse the tornado placed by the sage, and also stun certain bosses like the dragon. If you are having trouble with him, I highly recommand doing the obsession to get it. + This obsession is quite cool.

I heard they originally planned 13 chapters but due to time constraints had to condense it into 6. I guess some of it went into Chapter 3. Hope they'll have DLCs for the other missing chapters.

Really glad this game worked out after the old teaser was mostly the original solo dev saying "hey, I have a really cool idea and I know a lot of vfx stuff, but I have no idea what I'm doing in terms of game development. Can anyone in and around china help me make this project a reality." Like, good for you bro.

People saying the game has no story but idk after each chapter we get a little music video cinematic and tbh half the time you aren’t sure if it has anything to do with what you just went through, Like chapter 2 with the man and the fox come to find out in chapter 3 it’s a pretty big side quest. Side quests in general are some of the best content in the game

@@lajeunesse7988 there's story (telling) and then there's lore. Going out of your way to pick up neat information through codex's is lore. The face value narrative presented to the player is the storytelling. I can agree to some extent about the story telling being "off" for lack of better words.

@@ziontea7045 Ok I see what you mean. I guess the story telling isn't too obvious in that sense. Although I find the overall storyline pretty good, probably because first I know the story of journey to the west, and also I read all the texts in the codex when I am tired of all the fighting, which I find is complementary to the story telling.

In fact, Game Science originally produced 13 chapters for Black Myth Wukong, but due to insufficient time, it was cut down to five. Some people discovered many unfinished maps through wall-penetrating, which is why there are many air walls in the game.

For me Black Myth wukong opened the floodgates to East meet West in terms of gaming. Sure we had a few Chinese games already but that's just the tip of the iceberg. There are a couple genres of Chinese mythology like Wuxia and xianxia that has yet been introduced to the West. It would be great to have more of those for the US

Yellow wind sage I somehow beat second try despite getting pummelled by Vanguard Tiger. When he went into the storm and attacks with sand clones I just put out a cloudwalk clone to tank the hits and charged a heavy. Also a cool tip, which was really fun to discover naturally if you'd rather not have it spoiled, is that the wind tamer vessel you unlock from the beetle fight in Ch.2's secret location after doing the boar's quests will stun the Yellow Wind Sage for an extended time and he has unique voice lines questioning where you found that power. Helped a lot. The Tiger Tally curio from the secret area is also one I expect to keep equipped for a long time, it actually helps break up the monotony of light attacks that Charlie mentions as it makes the staff spin a viable way to proc "successive hits" to activate the curio's bonus damage and its also badass seeing the staff get red-hot as you spin it

How so? It's delayed, and PlayStation players (and a LOT of PC players) can't play it because of the technical problems. It needs time to be fixed and optimised for the many who are having issues, better a working product when it's ready instead of a problematic one early.
