People criticize Xu Xiaodong, the Chinese MMA fighter, because he keeps challenging Kung Fu masters who are obviously smaller in size. The Kung fu "masters" also seem to have no real combat or even sparring experience. So let's look at one of the Kung Fu styles that is grappling-based. This slightly obscure form of Chinese Kung Fu is called Shuai Jiao 摔跤. Let us know what you think about this match and this type of Chinese kung fu. Is this the base to add striking Sanda to form a complete MMA system that's Chinese?

I thought Xu Xiaodong was on a mission to expose bullshit ways of training, not to challenge "kung fu". "Kung fu" is an extremely broad term; it means martial art in Chinese, so it can refer to anything between dim-mak mystical BS and full-contact san shou. So it would be pointless for him to challenge shuai jiao since the training is almost the same as Judo, which does very well in MMA.

Ahh but yea, I think you guys are misunderstanding what his purpose is, he is trying to expose fake martial arts of China, not challenge legitimate arts. His purpose is not to just challenge anyone or any style just those who teach Chinese martial arts that doesn’t work but they claim that it works. So that being said it’s not that he doesn’t have the balls to challenge this combat arts that are effective but to expose those that is not. People are taking this out of context and trying to put him down. He doesn’t need to prove himself that he is a legitimate fighter that is not why he is doing it, he wants the fake martial arts to prove what they teach is not fake.

In the late 1990s I visited my old taiji master in China and was telling him about the UFC revolution taking place in the West and he was non plussed. Finally, he responded by saying “you mean rucking?” I said “no rules fighting”. He said “oh, in that case just get a brick, come up behind your opponent and cave his skull in”. That kind of ended that debate. He was a wise old man.

My own „Kung Fu-Style“ is in fact a combination of Northern Mantis, San Da and Shuai Jiao - and so far it worked well against Tae Kwon Do, BJJ and other Kung Fu-Styles. It is always just a matter of how you train… P.S.: …and of course the rules: if you are heavy on ground grappling, Shuai Jiao is not as useful as in Stand Up-Fights! But I simply love it 😉

It is in sanda, it’s just sanda has this awkward 5s rule to perform a throw after clinch. They did this because there’s no ground fight allowed in sanda and the ref will stop the fight a awards poijts after any successful throw (2 or 3 depending on the throw) and early sanda, which didn’t have such limit became a throw fest. Everyone and their mom is trying to throw the opponent instead of punching or kicking and this also gave people with wrestling background a huge advantage. As a result, the higher ups decided that this will make sanda less entertaining to watch and changed the rules.

Throwing someone down with force, is quite validly devastating. However [other than that]; you do realise that a fight doesn't exactly end just because someone is on the floor. Moreover, someone on the ground actually has more grounding / support than someone who is standing.

Joshua Sharrock agreed. I personally mix karate with judo and BJJ and did some Muay Thai. I'd take BJJ if I had to stick to one style,because,it's been proven to be the most useful style. I started in karate because I grew fond of it as a kid watching Baki the grappler and karate movies,and later,due to lyoto machida. Fact is,most TMA,and even certain "useful" striking arts such asboxing or kickboxing,are useless against an MMA fighter orgrappler,thus, I started grappling because I learned the hard way

Joshua Sharrock The ineffectiveness of traditional martial arts is due to non-sparring. Even now that they are being trashed there is little encouragement to sparring. A boxer on training always spar. How can a traditional martial artist know what really works when he do not put it to test? Just the feeling of getting hit will change your perspective. In fact, I believe that a boxer who practice only shadowboxing without sparring can be beaten by a wingçhun guy easily.

Yeah I got to agree with Joel, China has been doing its martial arts for a long time. NOW I wont say they have the oldest martial arts on earth, because it is just a case of China was one of the first countries that have recorded history and I bet Japan and other countries have been doing martial arts for just as long. But saying China rips off other martial arts is a bit silly. If China did rip off other martial arts they would be more effective today funny enough, A lot of martial arts that 'rip off' others and put their own spin on it tend to be the more effective martial arts, such as BJJ, American Kick Boxing, Dutch Kick Boxing, Krav Maga and Sambo. What I am saying is this will not be effective in a fight against an MMA fighter because of the lack of ground fighting and submissions. I seriously see no way they would win against any other grappling arts, they might be pretty good at getting the takedown....They have no experience of what to do after the takedown. Regardless, I dunno why this martial art has to be brought up...China has a GREAT Freestyle and Greco wrestling program and they have a lot of talented wrestlers.

The throws are pretty good. They're slightly conservative, in that they don't really seem like they want to commit that much. And their defense could be better, but idk if that"/ the art or the artists. I think the main thing they could improve on is their standup in general. So their throw defense, their linking different throws in differnt directions. They could stay looser, so it disguises their attacks and allows them to move in and out easily. So mainly they could move around more, use more kuzushi (off balancing) rather than trying to sort of sneak in and surprise them. Surprise is good, but if you have a bit more movement and off balancing it'll greatly reduce the amount of energy and speed required to pull off a throwing technique

I don't think Xu Xiaodong would have anything against Shuaijiao(Wrestling). It's a standup grappling form that trains through conditioning and hard sparring which he would respect. That's like him challenging Judoka or wrestlers. He needs to go after some of the "hard" style Southern kungfu guys that have prided themselves for a long time like the Hung-gar & Buk Sing Choy Li Fut schools. That would be fun to watch to see how their best guys stand up to his average MMA skills.

I don't think Xu's point is to humiliate all Chinese martial arts, but rather to point out the inefficient ones that gives people the false sense of Self Defence hope. Shuai jiao along with Sanda are legit martial arts in China which are applicable in MMA, grappling, takedowns and kickboxing.

in the most traditional form this is identical to mongolian, manchurian, and korean traditional wrestling, actually many concepts of soft styles such as taichi came from this. it is one of the oldest martial arts in Asia pre-dating the separation of the Asian peoples... however due to it's age, it is not really altered from its original use. put an opponant on the battle field to the ground and run back while the spearmen take a hop forward and use minimal stamina to permanently take out a easy target from the battle field before he can re-arm himself and become a threat. however because this is quite old, similar to the older styles, the practice of it was simple 1 or 2 movement drills and matches, giving practitioners a ridiculous amount of experience, which is part of what makes it so effective.

The story on this art is that is was made for real combat and throws are intended to land opponents on head. So the breakfalls are different than judo. This is the sport version. The non sport art uses strikes as well. Fukien dog boxing is supposed to be another kung fu that is ground oriented. As far as vs other styles the infamous Matt Furey who was some Greco champ went to China to become first no Chinese shaui Jiao champion. Also cung les san shou incorporates some of these throws.

Actually Judo is the sport version and jujitsu where it came from also has strikes and kicks. There are throws in Judo that was made illegal because it was intended to kill or maim. Cung Le does incorporate Shaui Jiao but also wrestling as well (He was an all American wrestler at HS). The guy alsonknows TKD and boxing so he is very dangerous. Shaui Jiao (which I suspect was derived from Mongolian wrestling) like Judo is very effective.

To be honest, the example you gave is a valid criticism of BJJ. But to be fair, the Shuai Jiao practitioners are using their throws while trying to stay on their feet it's a real plus in self-defense situation and kinda justifies the lack of groundwork. Still if they have to face a wrestler or judoka they would have serious problems.

youve got to remember that a part of shuai jiao is taking people down without going down yourself, and arguebly that can create problems for judoka and wrestlers. also, like judo is to traditional jujutsu, shuai jiao is a standardised form of competition and not a traditional style (kuoshu federation, 1928). the traditional art was more of a mix of skills and disciplines called Jiao Li which included striking, locks, and holds in addition to the throws and takedowns, a more comllete martial art. no one really trains military jiao li and as such a lot of shuai jiao training contains throws and takedowns from across kung fu styles in addition to less standardised forms of traditional chinese wrestling. compared to judo, competitive shuai jiao doesnt put so much credit on going to the ground.... hence its point system where if your not fully taken down (ie stop yourself falling by placing a hand on the ground) then your opponent cant score the full 3 points and only gets 1. also shuai jiao allows you to grab the legs.... nothing wrong with a double leg, single leg, or an ankle pick... just dont put your knee on the ground and give away a point. who says these guys cant sprawl either....

Shuai Chiao petitioners do not do sacrifice throws. This is only the competition or sport side of Shuai Chiao the Combat side has strike such as kicks punches, breaking of Limbs, locks as well, on the ground submissions and stand up submissions as well to put that pointed out of commission for once or even death if necessary in real life.

I couldnt agree with you more, the problem with this type of judo is how they struggle to hip down throws and dont understand how their legs are open for attack too since in this sport there are more rules. It would be a better sport and martial art if they only looked at other martial arts and use more logical inexperienced techniques like takedowns and pinning like street fights half the time.

In my opinion this is not bad. However, Judo offers ne waza and I am also thinking about Catch Wrestling, which seems not to have many limits on submissions. This martial art offers nice throws. I also believe that the clothing could be used to choke, however. I also like the fact that the scoring goes beyond the Ippon. No matter what happens I think that Xu Xiaodong should try since there is a chance to grow and improve. Win or lose I respect those who put their skills to the test.

Shuai jiao is interesting, it reminds me a lot of old school Kodokan Judo (before the Japanese started banning techniques to save face) with hints of Greco Roman. My only concern is, if you dont have the jacket, then what? Just like judo with no gi, you'll have to adapt the techniques for that. Even BJJ is different if certain techniques are allowed or not. Man, it's almost like you have to think and train and apply and adapt and modify and test and re-train... 🤔😉

Love the technical Shuai Jaio. These guys would not be able to grab clothes or get perfect holds for great throws, in an MMA match. All throws need to be done on an opponent trying to take your head off. I do think that this some of this art would add to the MMA matrix.

They are doing good judo style throws and some forms of wrestling. However, MMA is multifaceted as you know. I believe with MMA training(if they don’t already have it) they will grow in the sport of MMA. I believe they should challenge other grappling styles rather than MMA and in my opinion they will do fine. Thanks for posting

“Shuaijiao” means “wrestling” in Chinese. For example, WWE = “Shijie Shuaijiao Yule”, or “World Wrestling Entertainment”. It’s not necessarily a Kungfu style. I mean China has a wrestling team too for the Olympics.

This is pretty much judo. The only difference is that judo has this new rule (or somewhat new, I don’t know how long it’s been around) that you can’t attack the legs, but that rule apparently doesn’t apply here. But either way this is the best grappling style of Kung fu that could in fact surpass the well known Wu Tang styles.

I think MMA fighter might still win because of the striking. If the Chinese grapplers only train in this form, and can't defend or initiate strikes, they might have a problem and also the gi they wear in the competition gives them grip, sort of like a judo guy with gi going against a no-gi person. Just a thought, love your videos.

This is basically judo with leg grabbing/tripping allowed, which is something I have been arguing for! Judo pussyfied itself to please the Olympic overlords. Therefore Chinese Judo is now better. At least you can grab a dude's legs. Judoka's have more explosive power, so they might fare a tiny bit better...I think? Under MMA rules the MMA guy would win, period.

Mohseen Lala you never know if you really want to fight until you get punched in the face and the smell of your own blood fills your nostrils. it triggers a fight or flight response that you have to be prepared for. I have seen really big muscular dudes that think they are badasses that get punched in the face one good time and they can only think about how the hell to get outta there.

Leg grabs are super easy to counter with gi on though. You push forward I just sprawl and pull your collar in the opposite direction of your neck, since a leg takedown relies entirely on pushing force resulting in an easy choke. And there's no strikes so there's no good reason to stand more straight like in MMA or boxing, don't gotta worry about avoiding punches or getting a knee to your face so going for the leg takedown just isn't as viable based on just the common way to stand in Judo.

Mohseen Lala judo has ground work. I don’t think you understand judo. Also tripping is legal in judo. Not to mention that many judo schools do teach leg attacks. If you’re interested in throws with leg attacks why wouldn’t you just learn wrestling honestly?
@MohseenLala

I've done Judo dude, oddly enough Newaza focused so I'm very well aware of what the art entails. Was talking about Judo more as a sport rather than an art. Foot trips and sweeps are legal here, but you can't intentionally target someone's legs (like a double or single leg take down). And even if they do teach newaza, the amount of time given in a Judo match doesn't make for a satisfying ground fight. Over here it's 30 seconds upon a failed Ippon--which is bullshit.

As a judoka I feel like these guys have a viable takedown style. It's very smooth like the older judo. But nowadays judoka are just too strong and have too much resistance to fall for this. But it's good,certainly can beat an average person with this. But compared to judo....meh,I'd say it's basically ancient vs modern if they faced Plus judo has ne waza and,to top that,a lot of judoka do BJJ,so if the fight goes to the ground against an MMA fighter with good judo/wrestling game or BJJ game.....no I can't really hand out the Victor here due to lack of ground game. Xu xiadong might beat they a** because Xu knows BJJ these guys have no ground game BUT these guys have superb throws.

TGGP senpai Why don't they just learn Judo instead of trying to create a style that's a inferior ripoff? Chinese people are strange because their pride is the reason they've now been surpassed in martial arts by the west.

ichnsn chgo well,from my understanding,Chinese wrestling has a tradition that spans thousands of years before judo/JJJ. So it's not a rip-off. But. I think it just looks like sloppy judo. It has a deep cultural meaning for the Chinese just like other forms of Kung Fu. And I do agree it's inferior,but,with these peoples brute strength combined with judo and/or BJJ,I would say they would be beast

Turquoise Uranus and if it's watered down instead of evolved,how come I only see sloppy takedown attempts with no kuzushi or set up what so ever. I'm sorry to saythis,but this wouldn't really work against a judoka. Source: I'm a 3 stripe white belt who beat someone with 3 years of shuai jiao training back in Mexico. He did no set up and just sloppily tried takedowns,I resisted all.

I've done jujitsu for about 2 years and 5-6 months of bjj , these guys could definitely handle beginners and do ok against intermediate students, but high level guys would destroy them . But that being said this actually has sum practice street fighting applications. Against some dude with no training ,that is trying to hurt you this would be useful.

Obviously there's no striking and groundwork, but that's okay, because there's not supposed to be. As a throwing art, the only thing I see as a weakness in Shuai Jiao are the lack of sacrifice throws; because of the "first to touch the ground" rules, that obviously excludes front lateral drops, tomoe nage, and so on. And with these variables removed, you tend to see a lot of leaning forward with heavy pressure - the exact situation where a front lateral drop would be ideal, were it legal.

Hi Fight Commentary Breakdown, you mentioned that Xu Xiaodong most likely won't challenge these guys since he's out to debunk the "Kung Fu with no practical application". That said, I think that's the actual reason why he won't challenge these guys. He doesn't need to because they're legit. Not because "he doesn't have the balls to challenge them".

it would function the same as ameture wrestling skill, still need to know what to do when the person is punching you, or wants to be on the ground they'd have to either be naturally savage or have some striking, grappling positions, and submission to be effective , against people who train all the above , need to go for some one trained in Sanda

Sanda is the style of Kung Fu that can go for mma specially striking all way. I think Kung lee uses. Is just like Muay Thai with a bit of wrestling very complete. Striking is perfect but I wouldn't trust the grappling of sanda alone against BJJ I think a bit of wrestling , judo sambo or BJJ mix would be better

If he was to fight someone trained in this style it looks like he should plan on going with lots of inside fighting with uppercuts and knees. I think he would still win. But they really shouldn't play by weak rules like no ground and pound. In a fight nobody's going to stop someone and say hey you can't fight on the ground.
@insanejoe9042
@insanejoe9042 6 жыл бұрын
Honestly, this wouldn't be enough to even challenge Xu Xiaodong. He's an MMA fighter, he's more complete, remember: traditional martial arts or single martial arts will always be inferior to MMA. Why? Because MMA is not a martial art itself as many people think it is, its a system, a system composed of many martial art techniques and discipline, not one big set of rules and discipline, that's why its very flexible and complete. Think about it, an MMA fighter with a multiple background will always be able to defend himself whether if he's on the standing game, on grappling or even on the ground. Though I don't really know how much of an MMA fighter Xu Xiaodong really is, if he only know how to strike or he's actually awful and he's just f-cking up guys with no real fighting ability and just having fun doing kung fu lol

They are talented wrestlers, sure, but would this alone translate well to an MBA style bout? They can defend against takedowns well, but throwing somebody won't decide a match- you need to follow up with a submission or some strikes. If you don't train those scenarios, it'll be too easy for an opponent to get up again or take your back.

I dunno. For these guys to use their martial arts, first they have to get into grapple range, and Xu Xiaodong is gonna be trying to punch and kick them in the head and legs the whole time. Also, I don't know if having takedown skills is necessarily gonna translate to having real skill on the ground. These guys don't try for mount or submission after they've taken the other guy down after all.
