And it all comes down to Xue Yang's one character flaw, which Wei Wuxian doesn't share: Xue Yang never questions the idea that cultivators are superior and have a right to control non-cultivators. They are both drawn to the ghost path because it offers power without a golden core. But, Xue Yang only sees it as a means to assert his own authority and dominate other people. Wei Wuxian sees it as a means to empower others. Xue Yang allowed himself to be a product of his circumstances, and did not question the system that was hurting him. Wei Wuxian did question that system, and expose it for what it truly was in the end. I think you're right to say that it's misguided to hate Xue Yang. All of us have probably had moments where we failed to question a system that incentivizes cruelty. You may have even had moments when you knew something could be used to help others, but you used it to advance yourself instead. He's relatable. I don't think I would trust anyone who couldn't see that. They would clearly be in denial about their own potential for cruelty.
