a preview of the FULL video at: www.rojodojo.c... We continue to explore the Gikan Ryū waza as taught by Noguchi Sensei in Japan. Number seven is pretty simple. But in the spirit of Noguchi’s classes, we did many henka to get at the feeling he expressed.
Noguchi Sensei really emphasized the use of the spine in this waza. First, bowing to receive the attack. Then quickly springing back with an arch of the spine to counter strike.
The finish is a form of 大内刈 ōuchi gari or 小内刈 kouchi gari. When Noguchi did this in Japan he really sent his opponent flying. In fact, he drove him into the weapons rack with a crash, causing numerous swords to clatter to the floor.
Now I showed a henka that receives the attack in the cross of 十文字 Jūmonji. If your left hand is in front when you cross, you can take an omote gyaku. If your right hand is crossing in front, you can take ura gyaku. Either way the wrist locks are concurrent with the arching counter strike.
From here I showed an early timing and 入り身 irimi. You enter straight into the opponent’s attack to neutralize it’s force. When you check it like this, it creates tension, so release that to throw the opponent. But he really throws himself with his effort to attack.
Some of the students were trying too hard to copy the results I was getting. So I shared advice I got from Hatsumi Sensei. He used the word あまり amari, by which he meant don’t overdo it or try to do too much.
I made things even more advanced by using the idea of 浸かった tsukatta from Hatsumi Sensei. He said this to suggest you submerge your opponent in the kukan. The opponent is defeated because he is immersed in the fight while you remain floating on top of it.
Noguchi Sensei bowed when he received the strike and was almost apologetic, as if he was saying ごめんね gomen ne, I’m sorry for offending you. Then it is natural to come out of your bow with a 鬼角拳 kikaku ken strike.
Or you allow the motion of the bow to access your weapon. I hid the draw of my knife in this apologetic bow. Then when I rise again, my opponent is surprised by the appearance of the blade.
