This was quite interesting since it relates to my daily life learning Japanese. There are many things I couldn’t understand from a dictionary definition alone but I could understand them usually by combining the dictionary definition with real life experiences I had using the language. I related grammar, words and pretty much everything to memories and experiences I had with the raw language through media and/or with real people. So maybe the meaning of meaning can be understood in that same way. You understand what meaning means because it comes up in real life as you experience and learn more about whatever language and you equate that learning of words as learning the meaning of words because people arbitrarily put a way to represent what a word entails under the word “meaning”. It’s like trying to explain what “fuck” means in English to a non English speaker. You can give the dictionary definition which might make everyone confused or you can have them go through high school where the word is used everywhere in a million different situations and have them internalise it.
