Gabriel and I finally take some god damn responsibility and clean up that mess we made in Brutal Doom. During the process we idly pass the time discussing the three elephants in the room that is E3.

I love the contrast between Gabriel and Yahtzee. Gabriel is like "I'm donating as much blood as I can to help people." then Yahtzee's reply is "Your blood might save the next Hitler." I just like hearing a cynic, and an idealist talk about things.
@MakiOfSpring4 жыл бұрын
I think it's this contrast that made this series so incredible. Yahtzee and Gabe are very similar in a lot of ways, but while Gabe has dealt with his issues, come out at the other end and is willing to believe in the good people are capable of, Yahtzee is wallowing in his issues and watching the world through a lens of misery. So while the two of them get along well, they also have points where they fundamentally differ on and are willing to fight on that. I haven't found a podcast or whatever else duo yet that has such an amazing chemistry.

@@MakiOfSpring well tbh it’s also because Australians are generally very positive people. Whereas us Brits are cynics by nature and always think that things could be a lot worse.

Arexion5293 well its not word to word but pretty damn close (from the steam page) Disaster! An alien invasion and subsequent infestation have decimated this facility. Many lives were lost, the facility was ruined and the aliens were unstoppable. All hope was lost until one survivor found the courage to fight back and put the aliens in their place! It was a long and horrific battle as the survivor duelled with all manner of terrifying life-forms and alien mutations, but our hero won out in the end and destroyed the alien menace! Humanity was saved! Unfortunately, the alien infestation and the heroic efforts of the courageous survivors have left rather a mess throughout the facility. As the janitor, it is your duty to get this place cleaned up. So grab your mop and roll up your sleeves, this is gonna be one messy job. Today, you're on Viscera Cleanup Detail!

@nico99nrc8 жыл бұрын
+TheNinjaFuckr I think the truth is less depressing because once you realize that there is no value in life you get to live more happily because you don't have the stress finding "the meaning of your own existence". You just do what you want and know that nothing of all that has a point unless you give it one.
@HQ_Default8 жыл бұрын
I don't like the idea that one life is worthless, because then it's hard to say that a LOT of life is worth something. Nothing plus Nothing does not equal something.
@nico99nrc8 жыл бұрын
+HQDefault I can see why you may not like that but I have a different point of view on this. I think that no life is worth anything, objectively and that on the big scale, nothing you do will ever affect something. It's a very comforting thought for me because then, I don't have to worry about anything. I can define my cause myself and be sure that even if it turns out be bad, I know that it doesn't matter. Nothing has value and therefore nothing is changed through me. It may sound scary or sad but nothing has meaning unless you give it one.
@Lightice110 жыл бұрын
I can't see how someone who thinks logically can have a reasonable anti-blood donation argument. Enlightened self-interest demands that you support the existence of a system that can potentially save your own life in the future. Even if you consider all the other lives saved in the process worthless for some reason, your own life should still be infinitely valuable to you and the nearly nonexistent sacrifice that you make will contribute to your own survival in the future should you be seriously injured. So even if you are a complete sociopath, it's still more beneficial for you to donate blood than not to.
@asendimchev199610 жыл бұрын
It is a pretty stupid point for yahtzee to make. Its kind of based on fear from the unknown. Its true that you really don't know who you could be saving with your blood, but saying that donating is overall bad is quite a petty, fearful attitude. It obviously more likely to end up helping a normal person than Hitler.
@TheRadioSquare10 жыл бұрын
There are plenty of people that consider war as one of the ways to control population growth. I wouldn't be surprised at all if someone would think in a similar way when it comes to donating blood. After all most people that need blood, need it because of illness, injury or something else and if there's no blood for them, they will die, and no resources will be spent on treating them. That's a cynical outlook but it's not unreal. And I can kind of understand where Yahtzee is coming from if he's serious. Your blood might go to a child injured in a car crash, or it might go to some criminal that need a transfusion in order to survive to be sentenced, not everybody would be pleased with this perspective.

"Enlightened self-interest demands that you support the existence of a system that can potentially save your own life in the future." That's complete bullshit. Your single contribution is not going to save the system in a future event where you might need it. One person is just too small and insignificant to have such a dramatic effect. It's much like voting: the same guy will win regardless of who you vote for. As far as the altruism, it depends on where you are. If you're in America, it makes absolutely no fucking sense whatsoever to donate blood. Hospitals are profiting from your donation so they should really be buying it and compensating your expense and discomfort.

The reason everyone was pissed about AC Unity was because their excuse was idiotic, they claimed it was a ton of extra work when everyone who would actually have done that work said it would take just a few days at most. And actually reusing assets between male and female models is quite easy, as most of the developers who've actually done it (like Zombie studios) have stated, quite a good amount of the assets are at best transferable directly, at worst simple to adapt.
@AntiHero3610 жыл бұрын
zombie studios made state of decay and the men and women in that game moved the exact same was in their skeleton. the way that engine was built its easy to do that because of the lack of animations in that game but assassins creed has a shit ton and its gonna be a pain when it comes to a womans scale when climbing. (sry english is my second language)
@Mazzmaker6910 жыл бұрын
So the writing, motion capturing,voice acting, creating the skins etc etc. takes a few days? Not to mention bug testing sessions etc. Highly fucking doubt that.
@asteroidrules10 жыл бұрын
Mazzmaker69 I never said it would, I said that the actual animators, modelers, texturers, said it would. Writing (and a decent amount of modeling) wouldn't really need to be altered at all. Not to mention AC has had female characters as NPCs, and I believe playable in at least one game, and we know they have no problem with re-using assets. Yeah it's extremely possible and extremely easy to do.
@VanguardFencer10 жыл бұрын
If Ubisoft did do a female character and did a crappy job at it, people are gonna bitch anyway. If you're gonna hear people bitch about something, may as well take the cost-effective route.
@Ditch90110 жыл бұрын
But did you not listen? There is only one character to the game, You will see the same model playing single player or multi player co-op. Everyone playing only views different characters running around them while always playing as the default model. At the end of the day all these games are trying to do is make money and the publisher clearly decided that it was not financially viable to develop a female character that would integrate with the co-op.

A good example would be Anita Sarkeesian actually using all of that kickstarter money to make a game with a strong female lead instead of criticising Fallout 4 for it's crafting system's main use being to make weapons to kill shit, or Doom's extravagantly gore filled clusterfuck of bits and blood, amongst other things.

How is complaining about a games representation of your group identity so different from game reviews?
@Minib34ts8 жыл бұрын
Eldritch Hrempf There's a difference between a review and attempted content control. "Female protagonist would be better in X instance" is an example of that, "Less violence in Y instance" is also an attempt of that. If you don't like the game, find a game that you like. Or, as I stated before, you can always learn how to make a game, and make the games you want in the market.

IMO, *the* reason Unity should've had a female protagonist is not for the representation of women... It's the existence of *Aveline,* one of the best AC protagonists ever designed, and the fact that she could've easily been added to the game because she was an assassin living in that precise time period!

Assassin's Creed has lots of female models actually they can use as a base. As for animations and costume sets, yeah you can use the male ones, which is what Dark Souls and other games do. You can have some exclusive female costume sets that would require additional artwork and modeling, or change the walk and idle stance animations. Only difficult thing would be the voice. That would depend entirely on the script and what it requires..
@Crowz10 жыл бұрын
You would be surprised how hard things can be to do when you actually go to do them. Take separating U238 from U235, you know you need to spin it in Centrifuges but when you actually go to do it things break down, there is more you need to know and more problems to be solved. Iran ran into these problems which seemed so easily solved by the US and other nations. Likewise unless you are actually on the development team It would be difficult for you to know how easy it would be to do the things you are saying. I work at Microsoft on large software projects, and you would be supprised how much work it can take to add something as simple as a start menu back into Windows, because there are issues on a large project(in my case localization and performance) that can take longer than you expect.

I ended up buying this game immediately after watching this video. I can't get over how engrossing it is for such a dull concept XD
@SibirianBlue10 жыл бұрын
I don't agree with the AC thing. It looks like you are just a random dude, not an existing historical figure. If the story was based on a historical figure, I wouldn't have qualms about it. In fact, I don't really, I would prefer to play a as a girl but hey. It's just the excuse they give "oooh it's extra work to put a woman in" whilst wrenching in multiplayer (yes, those are different aspects, granted) is just pathetic.
@noLimitkillED10 жыл бұрын
That's because it's an assassins creed game, they're telling a story, using a historical figure would just lead to limiting what they can do. Plus the fact that a good assassin, shouldn't be known or in history, because a good assassin doesn't go public. Yeah some people might like to play as a girl, but that does not mean game companies should be forced to pander to every single individual want or be called sexist or racist. Things like this shouldn't be game ruining things to people actually interested in the story and gameplay. And yes putting in another playable character, hell Yahtzee mentioned it all in the video, it is quite a bit of extra work to do and they do have deadlines. Also the story is tailored to the character you get now, to make a woman character also playable would be far more work than you'd care to realize.
@SibirianBlue10 жыл бұрын
They shouldn't be called sexist, I agree. Lazy? Yes. But it's a bad sort of laziness. They do have deadlines, yes, but if a female character was included in the conception of the game, the deadlines would include that time. My point is, the character is new, he is just some guy who is rising through the assassin's ranks, and I don't see why it can't be a girl. If the story hinged on Dorian being a man, specifically, I'd have no problem with that. But it often doesn't. Replace Desmond as a woman, and s/he'll still be just as bland. If they said "you know, we really thought about this, and we just can't create a convincing woman/ this Dorian guy is super special to the story", that would also be ok. The excuse is "too much like hard work." This is a personal opinion, I did not say it would ruin the game for me, AC3 already soured the taste. Companies should not be forced to pander, sure. But, at the same time they are promising an immersive experience, and you know what, I genuinely want to listen to the story they want to tell, I just wish I could as a girl character.
@noLimitkillED10 жыл бұрын
The thing is, as bland as some characters may seem like Desmond, they're not purposefully making them bland. I mean that's speculation on my part, but I think they are trying to go for well fleshed out characters and you can't just assume it would be easy to swap the character out for the opposite gender because that would mean the story would not be bland by fault but because it wouldn't work in any other way. And I think anyone would agree, only having a single main character would be much better than forcing a bland story in a series trying to use story to set itself apart.
@SibirianBlue10 жыл бұрын
Edgy Armando I'm not saying the stories are bland, I'm saying that Desmond is bland as a character: you can replace him by any other guy or girl, the character would still be uninteresting. All his back story is "my dad was tough so I ran away (to work as a barman, not to for example...a circus), and then got into templars, and now I'm here". Having tough fathers and running away can happen to a girl too, that's all I'm saying. I *didn't* say that I think the story would be bland if they just put male characters in, Ezio was amazing, and hey, Edward wasn't bad either. And with Unity they are promising customisation and multiplayer features. Customisation, that's the key word. Like I said, if they presented Dorian's character as integral to the game, the plot, it would be fine. BUT they did not. You can have essentially 4 different looking characters, depending on what you want. So, if looks don't matter in the overall plot of the game, why should gender? It doesn't, but the difference is there's work to be done about it. Like you said, we wouldn't know what a good assassin would look like or who they are. And supposedly, that's the character we are playing. Why can't it be a girl? Again, because it's laziness on Ubisoft's part, but it's the bad kind.

Gabriel says, "white men are in no position to accurately convey the experiences of women and non-white people." This appears to have been misconstrued as "only white men's experiences matter." His point is quite sound. You don't ask a mathematician to teach a literature course, nor does that situation suggest any exclusive superiority about literature just because some people are not apt to discuss it, We should have people of all sexes, creeds, colours, religions etc. telling their own stories, rather than demanding somebody who is not you cater to your specific wishes about representation. It is your responsibility to tell your story, because anybody else attempting to do so will do the subject matter a disservice through their ignorance.

drsteiner12 speaking as an Englishman that's a bit of a false stereo type you're peddling there. Generally we're no more depressed emotionally than any other nation, we are infact quite cheery. Pessimistic on the other hand, well, I'll give you that. That can't be denied considering this is the only country I know of where a book called "crap towns" was released, and they had to release a second book, "crap towns 2" because too many people wrote in to complain that their town hadn't made the first one.

I'm sorry if I offended you; but I myself lived in London for some time and it is quite rainy there (well compared to other countries - maybe except canada) And I know it doesnt apply to all british people, but I'm saying that many british people are pessimistic and depressed due to the weather- This is scientifically proven. This also applies to another town I lived in Canada where suicide rates were high (also very rainy place)

So here is my impression of the AC: Unity issue: You always play as Arno, a male assassin. When you join up with other players, they are depicted as blank, generic assassins that are not Arno but are meant to exist as part of the game world. The problem is not that Ubisoft explicitly wants to tell a story of a male character (which I don't object to) but that the non-Arno co-op player characters could not have a 50/50 random chance of being either male or female - they are always male. I think that it is a bit strange for a major publisher like Ubisoft to do, seeing as how they are notorious for wanting to make their games appeal to a wide audience and willing to make compromises in order to put their games in front of everyone (see: Watch Dogs as a cross-generation title and not releasing Rayman: Legends for the Wii U until they had the PS3 and 360 ports completed as well). Anyway, that's my two centimes. I eagerly await the "Go play AC:Liberation" and "You know nothing about game design" retorts, as if they somehow void all criticism.

The problem is honestly a self-fulfilling prophecy. The disparity of men to woman in the industry coupled by tons of sexism and fear of "fake gamer girls" makes it a horrible industry to be a woman in. The female assassin is a valid complaint, because a majority of the stories Ubi writes are about men. Gabe kinda makes the point that they should write their stories, but as Yahtzee has expressed several times, the trite safeness of the series shows a more willingness to slop some shit and make a million. You guys don't understand day-to-day woman things? Then maybe it'd grow you a little to actually do some research and interviews to understand how woman work. Write a story out of your comfort zone, that's much more effort than Ubi probably puts in their yearly re-hash.
@Mazzmaker6910 жыл бұрын
Or how about you do it yourself and let other people write stories or make game about what they want. Other people don't give a flying fuck about what you want, so either wait until someone with a similar taste to yours makes something worth while or do it yourself.
