Hey, guys. I am a Brazilian English teacher! Congrats on the video. I am def going to use this video in class with students. Great job on showing how to be polite. Students usually have a hard time to get to grips with the modals. Loved it!

When we will order food / drinks in restaurants we must use modals for the beginning of the sentence like can, could, should, would, may and don't forget to add the magic word (please) in the end of the sentence.

Hi. I teach English in Vietnam. My school concentrates on speaking and listening and for higher level learners we have introduced 4 specific topics: Food and Beverage, Travel, Shopping, and Entertainment/Free Time Activities. Part of the course is for students to do their own study. We are sourcing various videos and audio links which students need to watch or listen to, and then they need to answer questions about it. After seeing your video, I was wondering if it would be possible to use various snippets from it for this self-study segment? Many thanks, Mr D

Well, he's a teacher and the boys are his students. He's taking them out for lunch in the USA and helping them with their English skills for ordering food politely. He's being a teacher, not paternalistic. As for arrogant, well, that's a matter of point of view.

A restaurant that doesn't serve meat or animal by products (milk, eggs, cheese etc.) is called a vegan restaurant. A vegetarian restaurant is one that will sell animal by products but no meat. I'm a pescatarian, meaning I am like a vegetarian, but I do eat fish.

"Can I get..." is very rude in most English speaking countries. The correct English is "may I have..." or "can I have".
@kails086218 жыл бұрын
Interesting....It's totally fine in America...as long as you add please of course!
@RobManser778 жыл бұрын
You do hear it sometimes in the UK, particularly with younger people, as we have a lot of American movies and dramas over here and they use the phrase a lot in those. It's not something I'd recommend to a non-English speaker to say in the UK though, just in case. Obviously it depends where you are - you would certainly never ever say it in a nice restaurant, but if served by a student in a busy McDonalds, then it's a bit different. The reason that it's rude is quite subtle, but basically it assumes that you're going to get the item already, rather than asking politely if you can or may have it. The most polite expression to use in the UK is "may I have a glass of wine please?" (for example), although probably the most common expression is "can I have a glass of wine please?". Note also that if you say "can I get.." at someone's house, then it sounds like you want to go and get the drink yourself - in fact with many people they'd point you to the fridge so you can 'get' it yourself, which might be a bit awkward!
@kails086217 жыл бұрын
haha! "get" it yourself!! That makes sense, never thought about it till now! Thanks!

? He emphasized in the beginning that they should always try to say "could I...?" Saying "can i get" repeatedly could also be interpreted as "rude" in States - especially in more upscale restaurants.
