You should be turning the crank anti-clockwise on this engine as the tensioner is on the rear, essentially away from the tensioner. You could be crunching a valve when you rotate it clockwise as the piston will move slightly before the valves temporarily as the tension shifts to the other side of the chain. I don’t think that’s a cam chain noise, sounds like bearings possibly.

Good video. Just a heads up when turning the engine over after refitting the tensioner you need to turn it anti clockwise. This take up the chain slack on the tensioner side. May make no difference but worth a go. Have you run it up to working temperature? They sometimes run quiet when hot. You can also find that sometimes the tensioner is 'between notches' on the ratchet. A bit more wear in the chain and it clicks forward and goes quiet. Same issues are present on the 600 Fazer whose engine is more or less the same as this one. Might be worth checking the valve clearance as well. Look forward to part 2.

Nice Gary. I know you probably checked but if the cam chain Tensioner was stuck about half way we were always taught to still check the cam chain and if the bike has been stood to check rubber seal cover washers in the transmission if fitted as they can go hard and cause a knock on vibration effect. Yam has had CCT issues on a number of models. Trouble with noises they play on you psychologicaly and you always here them. Good luck anyway Gary love these Bike vids.

Usually there are dowel pins holding the oil pump drive gear to the back of the clutch basket. Replace said pin with appropriate size pin to reduce play in the gear back and forth. I'd advise the matching size drill bit and taking the ready made rolled pin shaped end off it, or an Allen key rounded off to fit. Hope this helps -

I' think your were turning the engine over the wrong direction? You allways pull the cams direct from the crankshaft. You pulling the cams via the tensioner will push against the tensioner. The only way the spring can push the tensioner out is when the chain is slack, ie when the crank pushes the chain up to the cam instead of pulling against the cam if that makes sense

You do know that you are turning the engine backwards which will tension the run on side you are trying to adjust. Also you should have the engine in a specified position ie where the run of chain that you are adjusting has no tension on it. There will be a mark on the flywheel somewhere. What you could do is get the engine at that position turng the engine in the normal direction of rotation, take the springs out and put a piece of rod into the housing gently by hand and see if it moves just one notch more!

in this order, new choke cable (if it has one). New clutch cable. New throttle cable. check the head gasket for any wear. check your air intake is tight and actually making a vacuum. CLEAN YOUR CARBS! balance the carbs, especially if you don't have stock exhaust can. cam chain. cam chain tensioner. if you have done all of this and still getting noise or bogging, check the valve clearance. something will definitely be off somewhere... while you're doing the valve clearance, get your valves serviced BY A PROFESSIONAL as valves are extremely delicate. if after all that your bike still ain't running right, ya may need a new clutch

Try pulling the clutchin when the engine is running.If the noise goesor reduces significantly,then you have a clutch basket rattle the same as a 600 Diversion.Made between 1995 and 2001.The only vid that shows how to fix that,is a German one.Just search for Diversion clutch rattle.Easy fix,just a pain to strip the clutch out.Happy Hunting.

Hi Gary, Pity it wasn't a success. Worth a try though. Nice to see Dad happy and still passing on his hard earned knowledge. I don't want to be one of those twats chiming in with their crap but just a tip from an engine man. You were turning the engine the wrong way for what you were looking for. Anti-clockwise (@left side) pulls all the slack out of the chain down and round towards the tensioner. Clockwise as you did is actually pulling slack tight against the adjuster and stops the plunger from coming out.
@ProjectMan3 жыл бұрын
Cheers bud I didn't realise there was a right way as I heard it click when I turned itand when we took it back out it was adjusted. 👍🏻

Your videos are of great help and motivation!! I have just saved a 2008 xj900P from the scrapyards. As where I am based no one uses or wants an old bike there are no Pvt shops who would want to work on such and the dealerships doesn't touch the retired bikes!! I might need your advice on an issue which might be quite a bit for this space. If willing, could you kindly share your email or phone number so maybe I can bother you in detail ;-).
