This is one of two MOXF8 instructional videos I made in which you will learn how to create the drum track for your song (using the preprogrammed drums that came on your keyboard) & convert it to Song mode where you can layer the other instruments. If you like to work in Song mode, you will LOVE ME! More specifically, I will show you how to create a drum chain (different drum arpeggios chained together) using the pre-programmed drum patterns that came with the Yamaha MOXF8 keyboard, and then convert it to Song mode. Be sure to watch my other videos regarding drums . . . especially How To Record a Drum Track Made Easy. This shows a much easier way that you might like. I, too, am still learning as I make these videos!

Hello Kathy , I've been watching your videos on the Yamaha moxf6 and I wonder if you can do a viedo of recording a song in song mode ,and if you make a mistake recording, how do you undo and punch in to record the part over without recording from the beginning of the song.. Please explain how this can be done thank you Nickey

very good i have one question, how do i record a song with everything? so for instance i want to make a new song, so i want to play the piano first and then i want to add the drums, bass, percusion, how can i do that? thank you for your demostration anyway
@cathyt6773

That is a big question, but here are the basics to record a song: 1) Go to Song Mode, 2) hit the mixing button, 3) Hit F2 (voice), 4) Hit Category Search and choose a voice, and hit Enter, 5) Press the "record" button then hit the "play button." 6) When finished with that voice, repeat the same process after moving to the next track. (Get to the next track by hitting the "Mixing" button again and using your arrow keys to move to the next track). Then hit record and start recording your second instrument. HOWEVER, if you are using the pre-recorded drum loops, you should record them first and play everything else along with them so everything will be in sync. Even though you have a metronome click when you record, it is not the same as playing along with the drums. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO record drums first, stay away from the first four tracks, because when you add a drum track later using the method in my video, it will place them on tracks 1-4. I think you should watch my 2nd video on recording drum tracks. It might be a little easier for you.

Have you tried creating a drum track yourself by selecting a drum voice and playing them? I've tried this in pattern mode but am having trouble understand the quantization of the drum beats. I don't really understand the quantize number options.
@cathyt6773
@cathyt6773 5 жыл бұрын
Read this article: yamahasynth.com/blog/quantize-before-or-after I think it is very helpful. I am not an expert at all when it comes to quantizing, but I think the following tips might help you when recording a drum pattern: 1.) When you create a new drum pattern, just make it 2 measures long. It is easier to work with and you have a better chance of staying in time and not needing the quantize at all. 2.) If you have one beat that is slightly late, from the main Pattern screen hit F2 (Groove). Push play and as your drum beat plays, use your arrow keys and "data wheel" to move to the different beats in your pattern and while there dial up the different edit options and listen to what happens. If you go to "Clock Offset" and use your wheel, dial it up and you will see a little arrow pointing to the left or right which means that beat is being shifted over a little to come in earlier or later. You can also do this in "Edit" mode. (See my video about editing your song or pattern). You can also increase the velocity (volume) of one of the beats in the Groove screen, which can be cool. 3.) If your drum beat is pretty simple, from the Record stand-by screen turn Quantize "on" and select 120 (without the squiggly lines next to it). Go ahead and record with Quantize "on." The 120 means that any note that you play that is slightly late or early will shift to the nearest 16th note beat in that measure. Again, you need to experiment with the different settings and see what happens. 4.) I am not sure, but from my experimentation, if you quantize one track, they all quantize. That is not always great, depending on what you are playing on the other tracks. Better to try to record short patterns and get it right on play-in. If you want more variety, record more short patterns on different "sections" (see the letter A next to the pattern number in the main screen - - dial it to B,C,D, etc. and record something new in different sections. Then over or the far right of the keyboard hit "pattern section" and using the 16 numbered keys, switch between the pattern sections.) I think all of this is easier when you record into Logic on the computer instead of doing it all on the keyboard. Good luck. This should have been a video! If I learn more I will make it one.

Can you record one of the built in percussion songs and use as your drum track?
@cathyt6773
@cathyt6773 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you are asking. If are referring to copying one of the drum tracks on a demo song that came with your keyboard, you can hit "job" then F5 (Track) then "copy track" then hit enter. On the screen you will see that you can then dial up the track you want to copy from the demo song and you will see an arrow pointing to the song number and also the track you want to send the copy to. Hit enter and then go to the song you sent that track from the demo song to and it will be there.

Cane we move the tone saved in perfomance mode to song mode?? Please help me
@cathyt6773
@cathyt6773 5 жыл бұрын
I have been playing around with this and I don't think you can access a specific performance through Song Mode. But if you go to Performance mode and choose a performance you like, or one you have created and saved, you can then hit record (which puts you in record-stand-by mode), then look at the screen window and choose "seqmode - Song", then "number - ?? (choose a song number that is empty)", then hit play. You are now recording your Performance. When you hit stop (stop recording), the keyboard will automatically now be in "song mode" on the song number you chose. Push play and you will hear your Performance in Song Mode. If you hit the "Mixing" button, you will see the different voices of your performance on the first 4 tracks of the song.

Hi Kathy, I have went through this video and did everything down to recording the long pattern. But when I stop before it is done, for some reason, when i try to re-record it, all of the changes I made to the ARP settings are back to original settings again. So, I tried it again, and hit STORE, but the same thing happened. So, I have to go back and start all over, and change all of the ARP to what i want for fills, endings, etc. I am afraid to record again, cause if i don't get it perfect, I will have to start all over again. Any help? Can we message each other somehow, so i can further explain what i did? Thanks much!! Marty

Hi Cathy... when i save a song to a memory stick, the XF8 uses some obscure file... do you recommend any app that will convert it to MP3? Thanks!
@cathyt6773
@cathyt6773 4 жыл бұрын
I think the only way to get an mp3 is to hook your keyboard up to your computer and open up a program like Garage Band or Logic and while in your song hit play and record it as a WAV file in one of those types of programs. Then after you have it recorded, while in Garage Band (or whatever), you can save it as an mp3. I use Logic for this. My keyboard is hooked up with quarter inch jack cables from the "output" holes on the back of the keyboard into the front of an audio interface device. The audio interface that I use is Scarlett Focusrite (approx. $150). From the back of the Focusrite, I have a USB cable that connects to my iMac computer. I open up my recording program and I am ready to go.

how can we use drum patterns to play in a live setting. Is there a way to have the drums play while you play a piano without being in recording mode??
@cathyt6773
@cathyt6773 Жыл бұрын
Yes! Hit the "Voice" button then hit the "Drum Assign" button (button is on the upper RH side of the keyboard). Now hit "Category Search" and the drum category will open up the long list of drum voices. Scroll down to find the drum set/pattern you like. Then hit Enter. Now just start playing. If you don't hear drums, make sure that the "Arp on/off" button is lite up (to the left of the display window). When I do this my keyboard defaults to Grand Piano as I play along with the drums. If you want a voice other than piano or whatever keyboard sound your keyboard came up with, hit F2, scroll to the voice you want to change, move the cursor to the right (highlighting the preset numbers) then hit "Category Search" again to choose the voice you want to use. After choosing the voice you want, hit "Enter". You should be good to go.

If you are asking how to edit the drum track after you have put it into Song Mode, you simply hit the "Song" mode button, make sure you are on the track with the drums, then hit "Edit" (RH side of your keyboard down under "Song." You will see a window with indications for each sound of the drum kit. You can edit each sound from this window, i.e. soften the snare, or delete one of the cymbal hits, or whatever.
