I couldn't agree more. As someone who wants to use the device (because it's really much more than an instrument) to begin creating, I don't even like going near the damn thing. I can't just pick an arpeggiated patch and start recording because apparently it's not set-up for that. Most of us have day jobs, I don't have time to crack a book and research which video courses are worth the money (with the answer pretty much being none of them). Very disappointing. How hard is it to bring real world folks in and ask them, "so what would it be most meaningful for you to know as a new owner of the MOXF?". I started with an Ensoniq SQ-80, successfully produced on a Juno-G and now am trying to deal with this monster that's about as user friendly as a porcupine.

Cathy, this worked great. Never could have figured this out without your help! Thank you! However, I noticed that the Voices that I saved in Song Mixer mode were slightly subdued than the original Voices. For instance the Full Concert Grand Piano in Voice mode sounds terrific, but when I save it as a quick access Song Voice, it sounds like it's in a tin cup with much less volume and very little resonance. I also noticed it on several of the guitar sounds as well. Tex Boogie has some nice distortion in the regular Voice mode but when I saved it as a Song Voice using the method in this video, the distortion is gone and the volume is much more subdued. This is the case with many of the Voices when saved as a Song Voice. Several of the unique guitar sounds end up sounding exactly the same. When I switch back over to Voice mode, they sound fine. Then going back to Song Mixer mode, they are flat and subdued with most of the special effects gone. Any idea why this might be. I would really like to save the original Voices in the Song Voice Mixer mode for this to be useful. Thanks for any ideas to help me solve this!
@cathyt67734 жыл бұрын
Wow! I never noticed this before. You are right! So, I would think that setting up your voices in Master mode for quick voice changes would be your best option. Using the Master mode is actually the more "correct" way to set up voices, so I have been told. I haven't checked to see if there is any loss of effects in Master mode, but I am going to assume that there wouldn't be. I do have to say that the thing I like about using Song mode is that you can hold a note on one voice, push a button to go to the next voice, and the voice won't change until you release your finger and strike the next key. More seamless transitions between voices. I don't think you get this in Master mode. Let me know what you think. I am still learning, too. Also, if you want to take the time to try to understand this article, maybe it can answer your question regarding "why" there is loss of effects in Song mode. www.yamahasynth.com/moxf-category/introducing-the-effects

@@cathyt6773 Cathy, the article is helpful, and I think I sort of get the gist of what they are saying, but it is still way beyond my level of comprehension. Before I change all the quick key Song assignments that I created from your video, do you know how to do it in Master mode? Do I set it up the same way (press Master, then Mixing, then assign to one of the 16 keys)? I assigned my original setup to song 04. Does it work the same way in Master mode to assign the settings to a "song"?
@cathyt67734 жыл бұрын
@Tim O'Keefe Tim, be sure to watch my How to Use Master Mode video. But I will try to explain it here, too. First of all, in Master mode YOU WILL NOT BE USING THE MIXING WINDOW like you did in Song mode to access voices. Let's say you have a song that uses 4 different voices. Maybe you like to switch between piano, organ, and a couple other voices. So you are going to hit "Master." Then hit "F2" which is "Memory." Where it says "Mode" on the screen, you want to use the data wheel to change it to "Voice." Then hit Category Search (button to the right of the screen). Choose the piano or organ or whatever voice you want. Hit "Enter." Then hit "F6" Get Name. Now THIS IS IMPORTANT. On the screen where it says "Memory" you will see PRE1:001 or some other number. I would change the PRE1 to USR1 using the data wheel. Then use your arrow key to move to the right and dial up 001. Then hit "Store" (on right side of keyboard 4 buttons below the "Master" button) and then Enter. You have now saved the voice you wanted into the USR1:001 spot. This means that WHEN THE MASTER BUTTON IS LIT, and when you are in the USR1 bank, you can use the white buttons on the right of the keyboard to quickly bring up the voice you just saved. You would do this by hitting the "A" button, then the "1" button and you will see the voice you saved. Then you repeat the process, saving the next voice as USR1:002, which would be accessed by hitting the buttons "A" then "2." Perhaps you could set up the first four buttons for a particular song. Then the next four buttons could be for another song. When you have saved 16 voices, you then hit button B and start the whole process over again saving different voices. Setting up voices using Master mode is like setting up a list of favorites which you can access by hitting the white numbered buttons on the right of the keyboard. You will start to memorize what numbered buttons your favorite, frequently used voices are on. ANOTHER IMPORTANT THING: On the right upper side of your keyboard you will see Bank Select. Use these buttons and watch the upper edge of the screen. These buttons will take you to USR1, which is where you stored your voices. Please watch the videos I have made and this will be clearer, I hope.

Glad it helped. Just to let you know, I have had it pointed out to me that when you enter the voices into "Song mode" they lose some of their overall resonance. If you discover that this is true on your keyboard (it was on mine), and if it bothers you, you should watch my video "How to Use Master Mode." This is probably a better way to set up commonly used voices. They are accessed the same way, as you will see on the video. Voices maintain their resonance using Master Mode. HOWEVER, when you switch from voice to voice, there is no carry-over. In other words, the sound will cut off when you push the button for the next voice. IF YOU ARE IN SONG MODE, using it for quick switching of voices the way this video shows, you can hold a note, push the button for the next voice, and the original voice will continue to sustain until you release your finger. Then it will jump to the next voice. In other words, in song mode you get seamless transitions. This is important to me. Hope this helps a little.
@ExplorewithSvetlin4 жыл бұрын
Cathy T Loosing some of the instrument’s resonance is bad; yet the no-carry over is a real issue too; it is a problem even in Voice mode. I wonder if there is a way to change this.
@FritsvanderHolst5 жыл бұрын
This way of doing has an advantage over using the Master mode method. I am a long time MO8 and now MOXF8 user so I have bumped into some plus and minuses of these synthesizers. When you use Master mode to switch from one sound to another. If one is still producing sound due to having a sustained running or some echoing, it will cut the sound immediately as soon as you hit the button of another master preset. Most of the times this is what you want but sometimes not. I play a song that starts with an EP intro and at the end of the intro I lay down a chord and keep it with the sustain pedal. Then I keep a short pause when the chord still sounds and then I want to pick up piano as the main part and let it blend/cut into the previous EP chord smoothly. So I have my EP and preferred piano set up in song mode for this song. Play the EP on channel 1, keep the sustain down at end of the intro, already select the channel with piano, EP still sounds (fading), start playing the piano main piece and then release the sustain. This way it blends in without any cut off sound. Great video's Cathy. The manuals for the MO series are though to read through. The MO8 manually was exceptionally though. For the MOXF8 it improved slightly by having an owners manual describing common workflows/actions and a separate Reference manual if you want to go deeper. But still... its a complex beast. ;-)

Yes. You can layer (hit Voice and choose a voice and then hit Layer and choose your second instrument) and play two instruments, like piano and strings, at the same time. If you want to play one instrument in the bass and another in the treble, then you need to split the keyboard. Hit voice then hit split. You can set the split point by using your arrow keys and go down (in the "split" screen) to where it says "splitpoint" and assign a new point. If you want to have more than two regions on your keyboard, in other words, have part of your keyboard set for flute, another set for bass, another set for piano, you need to watch my video about setting up four regions.

Great help! I just started using my son's MOXF8 in church for our worship team. One song may need a warm pad, while the next may need organ, and there isn't enough time to scroll through the Category search to find what I need for the next song. Your method makes it easy to set up a setlist and just toggle easily among the selections! Can you use this method as well when layering instruments? For example, I may want to use a warm pad layered with strings for one song, and a different set of layered voices for the next song.

Not at all. If you use the method I show you in the above video, you are just assigning voices to different tracks in a particular "song." It won't affect anything you have done in Master Mode. You do need to understand that in the method shown above, the voices won't sound quite as resonant as they are when you use Master Mode to store your different voices. Not sure why, but . . . . I still like the method above because when I switch to the next voice it won't jump to it until I lift my hand and re-attack the keys. In Master Mode the transitions aren't as smooth. Cathy do you have a video addressing the change in the quality of sounds between song/mixing mode and the regular voice mode? I find the sound changes significantly and I'd like to be able to set it with the original sound
@cathyt67733 жыл бұрын
I don't have a video about this. I am embarrassed to admit it, but to be perfectly honest, when I made this video I had never realized that there was so much difference between the sound of the voice in regular voice mode and the sound of the voice in song mode. It's really quite dramatic, isn't it? I don't know why. I need to keep researching this topic. I like switching voices in song mode because while holding a chord and I can push the button for the next voice and it doesn't jump to the next voice until I release the pedal or my hands from the voice I am on. It is a seamless transition. You don't get that when you switch voices using Master Mode. So what is the solution? I just played around a bit and found that when you are in song mode, you can go over to the left of your keyboard and turn up the EQ knobs to increase the EQ and get a pretty close match to the regular voice mode sound. Your best bet, if you can live without the seamless transitions, is to save things in Master Mode for quick transitions between voices. I think the original voice quality is preserved when you save it in Master Mode. Watch my video about using Master Mode. One more thing. If you like using Song Mode to switch voices, and you have used the EQ knobs to get each voice where you like it, be sure to save the Song, even if it is just voices entered on the different tracks - - not really a song. Then when you pull up that song, or set of voices that you want to use for a live performance, the new EQ will still be there on the voices. PLEASE NOTE . . . in the past, on older Motif keyboards, to get the data (or new EQ) on a song to save you had to record at least one note on each track. Not sure if that is still necessary, but might be . . . Might a good idea to do that.

Kathy - thanks for all your help and clear explanations. Here's one for you. I've done several splits/layers for a show I'm playing soon. I don’t know of anything on the MOXF8 that works as you described on your old keyboard. But, if you are able to put your voices, splits/layers on tracks in song mode, you won’t have the break as you switch from voice to voice. The voice that you are playing will not change to the new voice until you release your finger and then re-attack the key, even though you have already pushed the button for the next voice

I am not sure if I get your question but this is my answer in case I did: A voice is just one voice consisting of perhaps 4 or 8 different sounds. Those sounds come together to make up One piano sound for instance. If you layer you will be making a performance. But you may start out with a single Voice of course. Thats usual. Problem: How can one 1) have a layered sound (more voices) in Song mode And 2) Can one only select one of the 16 tracks at one time? I guess the answers are 1) No, 2) yes just one. I raised the question about the effects once but perhaps better to take it to a forum. Cheers

@mikemartin57495 жыл бұрын
@@cathyt6773 I disagree. It is much simpler than your method. You simply assign any voice or performance setting to A1 - H16. Although your method works, it is more cumbersome and misuses the Song Mode for its actual intended use. The Master Mode was specifically created for what you are trying to teach people here.

You are right, it was simple, . . . just took some experimenting initially to figure out the button pushing process (at least for me). I will still defend my "misuse" of the Song Mode mixing window as another option for switching between a few "voices" (not performances). Sometimes, when using sheet music, I like that the arrow keys are right in front of me and I don't have to take my eyes so far off the music - - looking over to the far right of the keyboard to find the 16 numbered buttons. @@mikemartin5749 If I assign the voices I've selected to A1-H16 in Master Mode, switching between them still issues the "kill command" and stops all sound when switching voices. Are you saying there is a way around that? I think Song Mode according to the manual is intended for recording songs, voice by voice, with the sequenser (not sure if also to the DAW though it would be nice). I know however it is used for this purpose in the video. BUT is this not limiting since often we tend to overlay sounds or have a drum pattern playing to acompany your piano playing or whichever instrument? Good day

You don't have to necessarily be in "song mode" before you click file. Just click on "file" then find the song you want to upload (assuming you have a flash drive sticking out the back of your keyboard) and load it. To be honest, I just save everything under "all song" on a flash drive. I think what you are seeing loading is demo songs and songs that are already saved in the internal memory of the keyboard. I use a flash drive because I am not sure how big the memory on the keyboard itself is. But I do know that you can save songs without a flash drive. They will automatically load when you turn the keyboard on. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the tutorials! They are so helpful! Do you know if there is a way to have multiple voices in song mode; where the 'part select' buttons would toggle the voice off and on instead of switching to that voice? I need a way to quickly add and remove stacked voices and I'm not sure how to accomplish that. Thanks!

If you are in "song mode" and using the sequencer to play a pre-recorded song, you can toggle the voices on or off by using the "mute" button on the far right of your keyboard. When you hit "mute" the 16 tracks will light up and then you just press the tracks you want to mute on or off. You can be playing along with a pre-recorded song on track 15 (for example) and still mute tracks 3 and 4 while you continue to play. If you are not playing with the sequencer on, but playing live in "performance mode" you can also use the mute button to mute one or more of the voices and then toggle them back on. If you are talking about just making a layered voice and controlling volume of the different layers, I would recommend that you watch this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGiyhJJ4mpaebLs and then use the volume controls on the left of the keyboard (see the video) to control the different voices. Also, when you go to "voice" and choose a voice then hit "layer" to add another voice, your screen will say "New Performance." At the bottom of the screen you will then see "voice." If you open that screen you can move your cursor to the left of each voice onto the little "x" and then using the toggle wheel you can turn the voice on or off. Let me know if this helps. If anyone has a better answer, I hope they will respond.

Hi Cathy, I don't see why we should tougle that cross off when we have the alternative to mute or select each of the 4 voices in the performance but I guess these are alternative routes right? Anyway I would like to benefit from the Song mode also in a live situation with more than 4 voices (as in rhe performance). Do you mean they can only be muted (those 16) while playing back a prerecorded song? It would be nice to be able to select up to 4 of the 16 voices in Song mode during a live performance. Also in a live perform. One might be a solo artist using dome Arpeggiator and thus with the Perf. mode be limited to just 3 instruments/voices. Often one uses a piano and the strings, but you might want to add synth parches plus a guitar and brass, to alter between. That is why the 16 in Song mode would come in handy.

Cathy,I have a question. I recorded the tracks for a song - drum track, trumpets, strings, bass. My singer then wanted the song transpose up 3 half steps. I was playing on the keyboard piano track which did transpose but my recorded tracks didn't transpose? Is there a way to transpose recorded tracks to match the piano which I'm playing live or do I have to rerecord all tracks transpose up 3 half steps? HELP!Karin
@cathyt67735 жыл бұрын
Follow these steps. First you have to transpose your recorded backing track (your recorded song - the drums, bass, trumpets, strings). SEE BELOW TO LEARN HOW TO DO THIS. After you have done this, the "song" is transposed. Because you are going to play the piano live, you have nothing recorded on your piano track, whichever track you have decided that to be. That means that nothing transposed on the piano track. That track is still in its original key. So in live performance, you will have to remember to hit your "transpose button" over on the left side of your keyboard and hit the + or - sign to transpose that track. Now your piano will be transposed up to the key to match the recorded backtrack. Please read the following to be sure you do it right: How to Transpose your Recorded Song: 1. While in "Song mode" hit "Job." Then hit F2 "Note." Then scroll down to "Transpose." Hit "Enter." Now this is the important part. You will see TR01 on the screen. That means that you are only going to transpose track 1. Make sure TR01 is selected, then use your wheel and keep dialing until you see "TRall." Hit "enter." Now "all" of the tracks that have recorded material on them will transpose together. The other tracks that have no data on them (the ones that have piano default voices) will not transpose. HOWEVER you DO NOT want to transpose your percussion track or it will sound all weird. The snare will become a bass drum, a ride cymbal might become a tambourine or whatever. So . . . what I think I would do is go ahead and transpose "all" tracks (including percussion) then go back to my percussion track and re-transpose just that track back to original key. Or you can just transpose one track at a time by dialing up TR01 then TR02, etc. etc. leaving out the percussion track. 2. Now save or store that song and it will be stored in the new key. If you are playing along live in performance you will have to do what I explained in the first paragraph. Select the piano track you are going to play on and then use the + and - Transpose button on the lower left side of the keyboard to move the piano up or down to match the key of the transposed song. Hope this helps.

In music mode, can I use the 16 sounds at the same time in layers or splits?
@cathyt67734 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you are asking, but I think the answer is no. I believe the most you can layer on this keyboard is 4 voices. Check my video "How to save 4 voices in different regions of the keyboard" and see if you can find some answers there.

While in song mode, press the "Mixing" button and while in the mixing window (which shows all of the different tracks), hit F4 (EFsend). Then hit F1 (volume/pan) and set the volume for each track by using the slider bar underneath the little circle (pan circle).

Hi Cathy! I need your help. I have researched the manual and looked for videos on this subject with no help. Here goes, I want to create four sounds across the keyboard to use on one song in a live setting. Now I know how to do that layering them, but I can't figure out how to set the proper octave range I'm wanting on each sound Or zone as some people call it. How do I manipulate the octave ranges? Thanks for any help.Tracy

Hi Tracy. I spent a few minutes looking into this this morning. I think this article might get you closer to your goal: www.yamahasynth.com/ask-a-question/split-keyboard-into-3-or-4-parts This is not something I have ever tried to do. I think it is totally possible, just horribly hard to figure out initially. When I have more time (like this summer???!!!) I may try to figure this all out. Sorry.

Thats ok, thanks for the info. I will give it a look. I love this keyboard but they did a terrible job on the manual. The simplest tasks are hard to figure out. If i figure out how to do this I wil share it with you.

Thanks for your video! Do you know if it's possible to switch sounds without interrupting the presence of the current sound? For example when holding down a chord if I click the new sound the old one cuts off. My other keyboard doesn't do this
@cathyt67735 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. I don't have this problem on my MOXF8 keyboard. When I am using the "Song Mode" way of switching from voice to voice (track to track, actually) as shown in this video, I don't have this problem. If I hold down the key from my previous voice, it continues to sustain the same voice even after I have switched to the next voice (track). Not sure why yours does it. If you are switching voices using Master Mode, you will have the interruption, but if you use the method shown in this video, you should not.

I read a bit more and it sounds like you purchased a used keyboard, right? Someone installed a Flash Memory Module in it previously??? I think if you search the Internet you will find articles about Flash Memory Modules and how to reformat them so you don't get that message anymore. Good luck.

If you mean switch between performances, I have a video showing one way to do that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2jYn5xnlNtqlac. I would also check out my video "MOXF How to Save User Voices" and you will learn how to save your favorite patches as User Voices (voices that you, as a "user" like to use a lot) and then access them quickly. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q57TmYtsjL-Bbpo. This is an important video to watch.

Hi Cathy. Thanks so much. I am a gigging kbd guy and this is a big help. WhiIe entering my favorite 16 gig-needed patches/tracks, they all lost their effects and modulation functions. And the pitch wheel defaulted on all patches to an octave. I'm wondering what I did wrong to lose all those factory settings....
@garygilpin72546 жыл бұрын
Whoops..... I just figured it out. I changed the instruments in an existing song and the effects parameters carried over from the original song. I have to create a new song to import the instrument patches with all factory parameters..

Why not just use master? It’s easy and you get the full effects
@cathyt67732 жыл бұрын
When I made this video, I wasn’t using Master Mode very much. I know that Master Mode is probably the best way, because of the full effects issue, but I have to say that I like using Song Mode as shown in this video, because the transition from voice to voice is much smoother. You don’t get the break in sound as you switch voices. Using Song Mode, you can push the button for the next voice, but as long as your hand is still holding the key down, the previous voice will continue to sound until you release your hand. This allows for much more musical transition if you are playing in an exposed passage. I have since created another video, showing how to use Master Mode. But again, when I use Song Mode, it allows me to line my voices up the way I want them quickly for a specific gig.

Could they make it more complicated? User interface is unintuitive and cryptic. The manual dont explaine many important features and essential functions. "INSPIRATION IN A FLASH " ? A joke..The menus are hard to navigate and require too many steps are required to do anything advanced.(It´s the opinion of many users.. inckuding mine) Added to the fact that Yamaha support is only available during what, for most of us, are week day working hours, they were as useless as the manual. If you have all the free time in the world to figure out the interface, or... if you're a performer and NOT a songwriter/composer, you'll probably love the sounds. As for the rest? Sorry to say it's garbage. A monumental garbage..? Yamaha Doesn´t realize we´re in the 21st century AND not all musicians thimk like engineers!

I admit you need to get used to how Motifs/Mos work, but it is not that bad. To be fair other workstations have their own challenges and the new Montage/Modx line has a different design which is way more streamlined for peformance. I will soon get one of those to replace my Moxf.
