Thanks for your review and discussion. Pluses and minuses. I have played the P125 but not yet the D1. I am upgrading my gear with a new DAW and interface. I play guitar and piano, compose as "singer songwriter' if you will. Jazz and country rock. So I will be using the piano at gigs out and at home to create "backing tracks" for performance and recordings. I have always liked the gear from both makers, but I'm favoring the portability and speakers on the Yamaha for home and the connectability options. I do use the keyboard with Sibelius regularly. At this price point the Korg might be the better "stage" piano, but it's the overall versatility issue for me. Just to be able to capture a two track recording without other setup spontaneously is important to me as well.

Excellent videos and comparison between the pianos! I watched this video and the one comparing the 2 Clavinovas and the Kawai. I need to buy an electronic piano for accompanying my chorus as well as classical performers (strings as well as woodwinds). I don't need all the fancy sounds but need an electronic keyboard that sounds the most like an acoustic piano. I don't mind making an additional purchase of a piano amplifier for the D1 if necessary. Actually I don't mind buying an amp for any of the models. The most important thing is digital piano that sounds the most like an acoustic piano. Thank you for your excellent videos and your anticipated comments!

Hi Steve, If you don't mind getting separate speakersI really think the D1 is for you. If you are only using it at home a set of mid priced studio monitors would suit. I would check out the Yamaha H5 or H7 depending on your room size. Thanks, Dave.

There are a lot of online reports of new Korg D1s being damaged during shipping. The heavy weight and wooden frame don't ship well. I've decided that an expensive touring case is the only way to transport these safely. Something to seriously consider when buying one.
@johne1599

The sounds from the Korg D1 are really, really good, plus it has that great keybed. I already use MIDI, so that really adds to the D1's on stage and recording versatility. I only wish they would have included Pitch Bend and Modulation control. There are other features that would be nice to have on the D1, but then the price would be considerably higher. For me, the Yamaha-125 is a toy next to the D1. I know many will disagree, but that's my opinion. I was originally interested in the Roland FP-30, then the FP-10 came out. But, they both lack Main Out 1/4" jacks, which is a deal breaker for me.

I agree. I think the same.. did you end up making a decision of which digital piano is the best of all world's at this price point? I am also considering the Roland juno DS 76
@johne1599
@johne1599 4 жыл бұрын
@@Elazarko None at that price point. I took the Korg D1 out of contention based on its weight being supported by a wooden frame that has a lot of reports online of damage during shipping. The D1s durability became a major issue for me. The best options I concluded are at opposite ends, price wise: on the low end, the Williams Legato III and Allegro III. I have since acquired a Legato III, which I'm using 99% of the time as a MIDI controller in Presonus Studio One 4.6 Professional. It's light enough to gig AND it has left and right 1/4" Mains out. The speakers don't sound anywhere near as good as through headphones, so for gigs you'll probably want a PA or keyboard amp. For about $70 more, the Allegro III comes with a full-weighted keybed, making it over 30 lbs. My other choice is the Roland RD-88. So, how much do you need the RD-88's features and are they worth another $1K to you? If you're using MIDI, the sound quality will be the same since you won't be using the pianos built-in sound engine. For $229 the Legato III is a real shocking value. The sustain pedal is nothing compared with the Roland DP-10 I was using on the Roland A-49 keyboard controller. I'll be upgrading the sustain pedal eventually, it's just not high on my priority list right now.

@@Elazarko Not quite apples-to-apples. The DS76 has the same synth action as the DS61. It feels fine for synths and organs, but I found the velocity response on it to be inconsistent (I had, and sold, a DS61). The DS88 doesn't fare much better, despite having a weighted keybed; the key depth is shallow, and feels clunky compared to the action on, say, the FP-30 or even the P-125/121. Which is a shame, because it has a really good sound set (if you like Roland's sound) and the workstation features are nice to have if you're into that kind of thing. The Roland RD-88 has the same keybed as the FP-30, but a more up-to-date sound set. Costs more than the Juno (retails around 1200 bucks, isn't really showing up used yet), but from what I gather (haven't found one yet to try it out), it should be a better board if you're after something that's a piano first and foremost. Of course, that's also one person's subjective take; you might try the DS88 and find it feels lovely. That just wasn't my experience, but I know plenty of people like it just fine.

Besides the sound issue also quality and customer support issue is important. We previously used a Korg SP200 stage piano which for 17 years we hauled all around Europe. Smokey bars, open air concerts in all weather conditions, in and out of the van, that Korg piano had a hard live but worked perfect for 17 years. In contrary we also purchased a Yamaha DGX 620 piano which was set up in the music room of the house, but only within less than three years the Yamaha piano developed a serious fault. If you contact Yamaha customer support you get the answer "Please contact your nearest service center" - When I, as adviced, contacted a Yamaha Service center at normal working hours a lady answered the phone stating "My husband is in the shower, can you ring later" In contrary from contact Korgs customer support you get friendly and helpful advice. Due to quality and customer support issues we have decided - No more Yamaha products.

Nice job guys. Enjoying your reviews. Please show the instruments more. I'd like to see more physical details of the instruments. Especially when you talk about things like the keyboard, controls and cabinet. Also check your levels carefully when doing the keyboard comparisons because the loudest one usually has the advantage. I have a Yamaha P125 currently and love it. I am primarily a gigging musician but I have been playing with the ipad app (Smart Pianist) and the features and convenience are a big plus. Although I have not had a chance to play the Korg D1 yet, I get the feeling it's the same as the Korg G1 air without the case and some features. I do wish Korg had just made the D1 a G1 without the case and left the same features which includes splits. Have you reviewed the Korg G1 air? very nice video, guys! I'd like to know how the D1 holds up to today's market. Although the P125 and ES110 are still leading models at that price range. It's weird the Korg is less often mentioned, I guess that's for the reason you brought up: it's not an all rounder for home use. BUT if what you prioritise is Sound and Action above all else then it's still a good deal for home use. You'll find a sound system for it later.

Unfortunately I was looking at videos to try and decide between a Casio PX160 and a Kawai ES110, but after seeing these (and some others) I am now also interested in the Korg D1 and Roland FP30 as well! :) Why are these decisions so tough?:D I am trying to find something that is as close to a real piano feel (for the price) yet will enable me to tackle difficult classical pieces after I’ve got back into practicing. I have been playing around with my new Yamaha P125 and love but after watching this review several times I am ordering a Korg D1. My needs are for a keyboard controller with piano action to use with Logic Pro X. One of the snags I found with the Yamaha P125 is that if you use the Smart Pianist app (which I love) you can't have MIDI to and from your DAW. There is only 1 usb on the 125. The other feature that would be nice is a way to have MIDI play the internal piano on the P-125 and output digital audio. So far I have not found a way to accomplish this either. So having the ability to transfer digital audio to my workstation is only good for a live performance. In the US the Korg D1 is almost impossible to get. I understand Korg has just started shipping here and hopefully I will have my hands on one before too long. I'm a player and my first order of business is to have the best piano sound I can with the best action. Finally...how did the other sounds from the Korg D1 compare to the Yamaha 125?
@michaelmurphy987
@michaelmurphy987 5 жыл бұрын
While I understand what you are trying to do here, I'm not sure I am seeing the logic behind it (Full disclosure: I am ALSO a P-125 owner). I also use Logic Pro X and Smart Pianist. That being said, it would seem to be more economical to just swap out the USB cables when you want to switch from Logic to SP. I am sure that the Korg D1 is a great buy and can see its appeal, but I see it as throwing money at a problem that could easily be solved by "just getting another USB cable." Further, the Korg D-1 (at least the US version that is being sold) does not have USB connectivity. Only MIDI and 1/4" are available for I/O. If you were to want USB capability, you would need to purchase another P-125 or something other than a D-1. Speaking of being sold in the US, I was also able to find the D-1 being sold through Sweetwater AND Amazon, so you shouldn't have any problem obtaining one at this time (Aug 2018). Again, nothing wrong with the Korg D-1 as I have owned Korg before and now. They make splendid instruments and the build quality is second to none. I'm just not sure I'm able to justify having to get an additional D-1 for what you are trying to accomplish. Just my two cents and happy playing!

which monitors did you use? or was it headphones? Although I don't own a D1 so your observations are much more valid than mine. I have a G1 Air though, which I suspect would have longer note decay on the concert grand piano samples (Steinway and Bosendorfer), and I might have one piano on the G1 that is relatively dry sounding (Yamaha sample) like in your D1. I got used to this Korg's concert grand samples that require judicious use of the damper pedal so as not to make the sound muddy due to the super long decays, that's why maybe I was just imagining the D1 was like that too when I heard it in store demo.
@VinceMenger

@@gwapster13 Yes on Headphones and studio monitors also. I guess the G1 Air concert gp has more decay because on the D1 i can just simply press the pedal all along with no muddy sound whatsoever. You talked about the cable plug in saying the D1 was easier..They both take the same amount of times to hook uo the cables. plus if you're a t home , once you plug the cables in they'll probably stay there for at least several months....I do a lot of cocktail parties, X-mas parties in homes, Also,. having the rhythm section adds a lot to the cocktail piano music enhances the atmosphere...the customers like that it makes the music more danceable also. Having internal speakers is a great advantage...If the piano is in a limited space the onboard speakers obviously take up no additional space..Plus if you do a small party you dont need to lug around external speakers.....If you're playing in a band or a large venue the Yamaha is still able to plug into external speakers...I have been playing cocktail piano for over 30 years and the features I mentioned will make make the difference min providing a great experience for the people attending the party..

@@nelli1748 Not as a general rule but in my case, I´m looking for a piano to study classical pieces that I will most likely perform in acoustic pianos. If you talk about taking the piano out for gigs it might be different, however, nowadays is really easy to get great sound by using plugins so...yes, personally I prefer a nice key action.

Korg deserves more love! Korg's RH3 in my opinion is much much better than Yamaha's and Roland's actions in the up to 1500eur category (i didn't bother trying more expensive DPs)

This is the best review of both d-pianos on KZbin!! Nobody else compares/reviews the action as good as you. And now my dilemma: I'm a beginner and my lessons are with an acoustic piano of course and I wanted 'realistic' action at home. Bought the P125 and it's indeed a little spongy. Don't really like it. THEN: Tried the D1 in a store. To me that is the best keyboard/action you can get below 1000 EUR overall! HOWEVER, the D1 action feels too 'heavy'. It's funny but even with the spongy P125 keys, it feels more like the acoustic piano than the D1 to me. So I kept the P125. ;)

Update after 1 month :) Ended up buying the Korg D1 and sold the P125. Best decision ever! My concerns about the D1 action being to heavy were unjustified. The D1 has one of the best keyboard actions! Of course not 100% like a real piano but a lot(!) closer than the P125 (and others). I tried dozens of digital pianos in the store (price range up to 1600 EUR). Anyone saying: No speakers.. Yes, that's right, but the P125 speakers aren't good anyways. Anyone can buy a pair for 100-200 EUR of 'cheap' active speaker and they are still better than the ones in the P125. Another thing about the D1: The whole piano feels more like higher quality. Especially important details like the volume knob for example.

@@mikeh.4503 I'm confused between P125 and Korg D1. After looking at your comment it looks like D1 is good. Did you regret for selling P125? Can I go for D1...? Can we adjust the volume of the layers individually..? We get it on p125 right..?

Its clear that the Korg is the better keyboard. Also in terms of quality and customer service Korg is better. For 17 years we had a Korg SP200 stage piano which had a hard life as it was used playing live gigs all over Europe, from smokey bars to open air in all weather conditions and has been living in the bands van for most of its time. In contrast to this we had a Yamaha keyboard which after sitting in a well clean, dustfree music room broke down after only 3 years from new. Although it was never moved and not played very much. When you contact Yamaha the say "Please contact your nearest Yamaha customer service". When I contacted Yamahas customer service during office hours by phone a lady answered and stated "My husband is in the shower, can you ring later" Bottom line, the Yamaha broke down after three years of little use in the music room and the Korg is still working after it had a "hard life" for 17 years. We have decided to never buy anymore products from Yamaha.

Thanks for this comparison. Korg D1 seems like the best choice in that price category by far to me. Top mechanics, great sound, compact and midi > USB by far. Also don't listen to the haters and keep babbling like this please.

I did not get the D1 in my searchlist, because it does not have a USB port. It does however seem to be best value for me to begin playing the piano, but I would like to be able to use it as a MIDI master keyboard in a DAW. Is that possible with a MIDI to USB converter?
@THBakker69
@THBakker69 3 жыл бұрын
And to answer myself: I just did a search and found out that it’s possible to convert MIDI to USB, so that leaves the question if it’s identical in features? (which I’m going to search for too, because I’m getting more excited about the more broad choice I seem to have knowing this...)

@@THBakker69 I have a Korg D1 and a cheap usb to midi converter from Aliexpress, works very well and with low latency. Also have an Korg NTS-1 synthesizer/effect box that plugs into the midi. I prefer midi ports over usb, much more reliable construction.

I have one other question: is the maximum polyphony dicated by the keyboard or can you get higher polyphony when using it as a master for a plugin? Just curious, since I’m only beginning to play.
@haisulii
@haisulii 3 жыл бұрын
@@THBakker69 The maximum number of sounds the D1 can play at the same time is 120 which I'd say is plenty high enough. Never had any problems with notes cutting out or the midi not transfering enough information (but I'm not sure if 120 notes limit applies to midi). If you don't need any internal speakers this Piano is really solid and nice, I've had it for a year and can only recommend it.

I tried both and the Korg D1 is a piece of shit, sounds thin and has very low volume. Yamaha P125 is way louder, superior in all terms. NO I DO NOT WORK FOR ANY BRAND...JUST DON'T MAKE THE SAME STUPID MISTAKE I DID. I RETURNED THE KORG....WANNA KNOW MORE ? The Kawai ES110 is another garbage, sounds even thinner than the crappy Korg. Buy either the Yam P125 or P 515 if you care for your hard working money.
