This video walks through the process of replacing a faulty LCD screen on the Yamaha YPG-525/625 (updated models YPG-535/635). I attempted to repair the screen but had little success. If you figure out how to repair it, please let me know in the comments!
You can purchase the replacement screen from Amazon:

Excellent video! I obtained a replacement screen from a Chinese company (Shenzhen Wisdom Technology C0. sold by "pda-parts-center" on eBay, brand new, around $70 plus shipping). I used your screen replacement guide to work my way through repairing my wife's DGX-520. I also found some of the follow-on comments helpful too, especially the one about keeping track of the polarity of the power feed to the display from the power supply. It all worked out perfectly! Previously to buying the display, I also tried the various tricks (compression clamps on connectors) and never could get those to give me a stable result. I was a little reluctant to make the screen purchase, but am now glad of the perfect results. I will say that taking on this challenge does take some skill and experience with electronics repair, but Clint's Garage guide will make all the difference. Many thanks for taking the time to produce this guide!! - MAB

Thanks you so much for taking the time to do this, although after watching it and then reading the comments I too realised that it was the small contrast knob at the back. Like so many other users, I didn't know it had one. I disappeared into the garage/man cave for a couple of hours had a few beers, and fiddled with my motorbikes, then appeared with the keyboard all working, The missus was delighted, I had some time to myself and the £150 for the 'new display' helped pay for a new crash helmet..she still thinks i fixed it..result..THANKS again to others for all your advice and tips :)

I was wondering if I should cut the end of the connector in order to solder the wires onto the new screen because that's the only way. Even Yamaha couldnt confirm that. Pretty pathetic. So what I did was cut the ending of the connector then soldered the 2 wires onto the new screen, and bam, it worked! Thank you so much! One more thing: one thing you didnt mention when soldering the wires, the purple striped wire is the positive and connects to the "A" on the new screen.

Thanks SO much for the help. I worked on it on yesterday and the blue screen/white screen began working again WITHOUT having to replace the screen display. Here is what I did the same: I removed all the screws, I removed the main circuit board; however, I stopped short of removing the display screen. Here is what I did differently: I took a pencil with an eraser and I scrubbed the silver part of the display screen's network cable in order to get a good connection. I used tissue to ensure all eraser particles were removed from the display screen's network cable. I flattened out the double crimp from the cable to make a smooth curve in the network cable. I placed the main circuit board back on top and plugged in all 6 network cables again. Last but not least but MOST IMPORTANTLY, I lifted the keyboard on its side so I could see the display screen. Next, I put POWER to the keyboard and noticed the screen was still solidly blue. I then UNPLUGGED THE DISPLAY SCREEN'S NETWORK CABLE and then PLUGGED IT BACK IN. When I plugged the "uncrimped, cleaned" network cable back in, POWER caused the screen to "RESET ITSELF" and the original banner began the start up again as it did when I first bought the keyboard years ago....! I then unplugged the power again, put the top back on the keyboard, put all the screws back in, mounted the keyboard back on the stand. I am playing the keyboard again with a fresh and new looking display again! I am VERY happy and thankful for all of the steps ya'll helped me with. What I did was a "mixture of all the things I read from different people who tried to help." I felt the need to post this detailed write-up to possibly encourage someone else to try it BEFORE buying the new display screen.

To hell with the amount of screws......! I have the same issue but I love the sound of the keyboard and am in the process of doing a easy fix but omg!!! The amount of screws they put in there for no other reason than to dissuade owners from doing their own repairs. Thanks for posting tho'.

I think there are so many screws to reduce the risk of vibration or rattling, not to discourage owner repairs.

Without the screen, can one just use an external software to see the Yamaha settings. I'm thinking -- ipad instead of the tiny onboard screen. Please advice. Thank you!

Thanks, this gave me the courage to replace the screen on my YPG-625 and it went fine! Some tips: 1. There were two sizes of screws, the perimeter screws were shorter. 2. I just lifted the back off once all the screws were out. 3. I didn’t need to unplug all the cables from the main circuit board, just enough of them to get it out of the way. 4. Don’t forget to peel off any protective plastic film that’s on the new screen before you install it. 5. When reinserting ribbon cables, be careful not to kink them or damage contacts. Also it’s ok to use a power screwdriver to replace the screws, as long as you start them with a manual one: turn the screw in reverse until you feel a little bump, then give it a half turn forward. That will ensure the screw is correctly seated. And of course set the torque on the power screwdriver to a very low level. I learned from watching game console repair videos.

Thanks to a comment by BC I realized all I had to do was twist the tiny contrast knob on the back of the keyboard lol Ive thought my lcd screen was broken for like 3 or more years (been straining my eyes and looking at it at an certain angle to see it) feel so dumb right now haha but pumped to know my keyboard is still working perfectly despite more than a decade of using it ..

son of a !!! Out of the blue, yesterday my DGX-505 screen lost most of backlighting, so that the only way to read the display was to be directly over it (no angle). Found this vid, and the one linked in the comments below. . Contrast knob on the back. Sheesh. I must've brushed up against it recently. Adjusted it correctly and, voila! Crisis averted. Ha! Sometimes lucky & ignorant are not mutually exclusive. Happy to have dodged the $150 bullet, or the bull-clip trick (smart you are!!). That's a Lot of case screws!! pl&h, b.

same problem here, but had I not read your comment, I'd still be scratching my head! I bought this piano of a teacher that said some keys were playing louder than others so I got it for $50.00 with the pedal and a Wide free bench, so wide I can use it to perch two thirds of the whole piano on it while I repair it. Put it back together after cleaning every cranny and tons of dust inside which had already turned into moth balls! and found the screen all blue... the knob in the back was the problem... but I missed 1 key which did not "inserted" correctly into the weight so now I have to take it all apart and place the key correctly but had it not been for your 'detail', like I've said, I'd still be scratching my ass,. head!

BC your comment just solved an issue I’ve had with my Yamaha ypg-625 for like 3-4 years or possibly more. I’ve had the keyboard for like 15 years and thought the screen went out cuz I’d have to strain my eyes to see it or look at it at a certain angle. I can not believe I thought my lcd screen was broken when all it was was the contrast knob... I seriously am like so pumped right now that my keyboard is still in tip top shape cuz that was the only thing that wasn’t working according to me. I feel so dumb and happy at the same time lol Thanks so much for posting this I’m not even playing

Did you find what you needed? I have a PDF of the full manual and it lists all the voices and corresponding numbers. Curious if you saw or tried the binder clip 'fix' in the video that Jon Freeman posted? I just bought a new screen but I am thinking about trying that fix first. Let me know if you want the manual, give me your email and I can send it to you.

Thanks. I didn't realize it listed the voices in the manual. I should still have that. I just need to dig it up. I looked into the clip fix, but I hear it's pretty touchy, only works for some people, and those that it does work for - it's temporary.

This has happened to EVERY single Yamaha YPG digital piano I've ever seen. Usually between 2-4 years. Conveniently after the warranty for manufacturers defects has passed. It happened to both of mine and the second one I barely even played. I'll never buy another Yamaha product ever again and I think there should have been a class action lawsuit against them to fix everybody's broken LCD free of charge. It's a garbage product to do something like this and Yamaha is terrible for charging so much to fix it.

@@TalkingPoints1 There really should have been a voluntary replacement by Yamaha for these. Either that, or a class action lawsuit. Never again will I buy a Yamaha product. They are flawed and Yamaha does not stand behind their products.

I ONLY HAD TO LET IT ON FOR AT LEAST 12 HOURS ON AND RETURNED TO NORMALITY FIRST YOU HAVE TO RESET IT, PRESS THE LAST KEY OF THE PIANO AND DO NOT RELEASE THE KEY OF THE PIANO, THEN PRESS THE BUTTON TO TURN OFF AND START IT AGAIN WITH THE KEY PRESSED UNTIL YOU FINISH YOUR PROCESS. SO I DID WITH THE MIO AND RETURNED TO WORK. I DONT SPEAK VERY WELL ENGLISH. EXCUSE ME

+Cody Laberda Yeah I'm not sure why its so common. And unfortunately Yamaha won't take much responsibility for selecting a defective screen. I called them to try and get them to replace it, but the best they could offer was a discount of like $40-50. I think it was going to cost me like $135 to buy from them, which I think was better than most of the other places around. I ended up selling the piano with the screen as is at a huge loss. Oh well.
@0dy
@0dy 7 жыл бұрын

Several years ago I bought a Yamaha DGX 630 because it looked good. After using it I lost confidence in YAMAHA as it looks like it was designed by an imbecile. Everything about it is wrong. Whoever designed it did not have a clue about music and never actually test its usability. There is button on the front for Demo purely to sell it yet to get to the sound controls one has to scroll for good 10 mins through all the 1000 menu setting to change one thing. I can get a toaster has an App with pc interface yet they can't make this connect to a pc to change and save settings. There is a PC connector but not for controls. Even the latest version which have an app for control only provides functions to select instrument and couple of other things which I can do anyway. I though if anything would benefit from the advancement in computers would be the musical instruments, yet it is easier to change settings on an original baroque church organ than this rubbish. My display has gone dim but it is working. I sometimes fixes itself but very rarely. Does anyone have the same issue. Is the loose connection. There are so many screws I cannot risk opening it yet before I find out. The screws are another stupid design, I think like the fighter planes of WW1, every time they screw a customer they add a screw to the box.
