Trivia: Ducati were among the first brands to switch to electronic fuel injection for their top performing superbikes, tracing back to the 851 in the late 80'ies. You don't have to worry about carbs on any Ducati that'd be considered "superbike" since then. Also more trivia, due to a lot of rule regulation stuff, Ducati actually kept racing with the 999 world superbike platform a year after the 1098 was being produced due to twins having hard restrictions on them vs inline4 bikes, which greatly helped the newly developed crossplane R1. Then Ducati tried to do some lobbying to raise the limitations for twin bikes to allow them to be more competitive in general vs the i4 bikes that had more cylinders to work with, and after the change Ducati went back and dominated everything again in WSBK.

@MISTER SIR have to correct you here: Ducati went straight from the 999 to 1198 motor in 2007, the year the 1098 was released (the 1098R being the homologation special). Bayliss won the title in 2006 on the 999, then again in 2008 on the 1098R. Ducati did lobby for the controversial rule change in 2007, but it included some restrictions (among others literally a throttle plate restriction) and in WSB rules, twins have always been given a displacement advantage to offset the high RPM HP advantage of the 4cyl bikes. It wasn't until 2019 that Ducati finally fielded a 4cyl machine which required them to go back down to 1 liter.

I've had a 1198 for a year and a half, sold it this january. Basically a 1098 but a bit lighter and 100cc more (170hp, 13.5mkg), overall the same bike. The most brutal bike I have ever ridden, by far, way more brutal than 200hp+ bikes. Quite a stiff chassis, not the easiest but when you know to put effort in, it's super stable. Strong grunt, TONS of torque and absolutely not constant in the torque delivery, I never got bored on that bike, that's not possible. Does not rev to 15.000rpm, but I don't ride at 300 km/h in my mountain canyons, so I don't care. Pure and raw mechanical sensations, violent motor, in a chassis that can assume it. And that's a beauty too ;)

People are so goofy with regard to specs. The vast majority of riders aren't ever going to reach more than 70% of their motorcycle's performance limit, the idea that you need huge hp and torque numbers to go fast and have fun is silly. The rider is the limiting factor most of the time, not the bike.

I, too, have had the thought that motorcycles peaked circa 2008. Emission regs really started to get nasty about then. I see a lotta local guys riding around on 10 -15 year old sport bikes and can guess why manufacturers don't sell a ton of 'em anymore. People that want a sport bike buy one, and then use the same bike for the next 10 years since the newer bikes aren't enough better to justify upgrading. Also, they are fairly durable if treated well. It's like the story of the recipe for candles that never burn out -- making them put the candles makers out of business eventually.

Analogue operation - that is the reason I continue to buy older sportscars and hold onto my 2008 CBR600RR. Too many cars / bikes nowadays are nanny-infested and soul-less, with the same boring type of engine configurations. Before my CBR, I owned a Ducati 848. The 848 was my gateway drug, and it also had a wet clutch, so it was basically perfect. I only sold the 848 because the CBR had less power and better daily capability, which suited my lifestyle more. This bike is definitely a Modern Classic by alternative standards (not a big fan of only seeing naked cruisers, or 70's bop-stroke [pick a niche engine, niche limited run, niche fairing set, etc] cafe's as being the only qualifiers as "Modern Classic". These Super bikes are like the Ferrari F50, or the Lambo Diablo; sure they're from a decade later, but they are in an environment (tech-wise) where obsolescence phases out these more traditional mechanical machines out; because of the lack of computerized optimization (which has it's place, and in many ways does make bikes better [extending the limits of what's possible from a riding perspective]), but these machines mark the bar for an era, and I remember seeing these bikes on Covers of Magazines, back when ... that was something we still did culturally ... walk down to the book store to see the new cover bike/car on the new Road and Track, or Motorcycle Mag, or Dupont Registry. This bike is dope. It's yellow. It's a special bike. Definitely deserves to be called a modern classic.

Hard to imagine anything more "raw" than my Raider, but..... I agree with the sense of enjoyment. I've ridden bikes with modes and crazy electronics. Some were insanely fun. I'm just a simple guy and like my bikes "twist and go". I'm also of the mind that there is no need for "performance" changes to a bike except a new exhaust. But let's be honest... We don't change pipes for the performance. We change them for the noise. Increasing the performance to get "every last bit" out of it is ridiculous for a bike that's going to be ridden on the road. I know that's an unpopular opinion but it's still true. There's not a single road in this country you can ride on that does not have a speed limit attached to it. And every bike, even when stock, is very capable of exceeding every single one of those speed limits. So tuning a bike to make it go faster, is a waste of money and opens a door for people to do stupid shit and end up endangering themselves and other people. If it's going to be a track bike, then by all means, go nuts. That being said, I'm still in the market for my first naked or sport bike. I've been a cruiser rider forever after growing up on three wheelers and dirt bikes. But I am definitely feeling the itch for something sporty. But even then, I see no reason and have no desire to go absolutely nuts with an insane monster that I'll never be able to use its potential.

This is coming from a guy who loves motorcycles but when it comes down to it I’m primarily a car guy. Performance is not always about top speed, most of the time it’s the acceleration and the sensation of it. When do cams, intake, exhaust, tune, and supercharger to my car, truck, etc. 9/10 times I care more about the acceleration than top speed

Guys. You're gonna cry when you have to hand over that beauty's keys to the lucky winner. I got my motorcycle licence at 43 and spent nearly three years on a BMW F800GT. I went overseas to work so sold it with the intention of getting something a little more exciting for when I got home on rotation breaks but it took five years. Fast forward to fall/autumn 2020 and I was sucked in by a 2009 1098 with Termis. They started in the small shop & it put the fear of god into me but I had to test ride it to ensure my 51 year old frame would be comfortable. Oh my god. The first bike I'd ridden after a five year break and it was a pussy cat when treated with respect, but opening her up on the highway made me laugh out loud. My soul has been stirred. It has so much character, is so fast from anywhere in the rev range and yet is so comfortable. Enjoy your beast while you can. I wouldn't be surprised if another ended up in your private collection. ;-)

I have a 916 and ST4 and at around 110/120 hp which today is considered average, they continue to thrill and it's the analogue aspect that makes them so enjoyable to ride. The trellis frame will soon be a thing of past for Ducati as will Desmo valve actuation considering the success of the new V4 valve spring engine found on the MultiStrada. But it's always been Ducatis MO to quickly bring into production what is learned from racing or changing technologies. BevelHead owners still lament the day when Ducati went from bevel driven cams to the belt driven Pantah engine but expect Ducati to always push where they can. End the end, they all are and ride like a Ducati.

When I see the 1098 all I can think is, "gather 'round kids, let me tell you a tale of the Before Times. Before the advent of Euro-specs, throttles had a thing called 'feel', and they actively tried to kill you. It was a wonderful time to ride....but the dark times came, a company called BMW introduced a bike called the S1000rr. Soulless and cold, and somehow humanity was diminished..."

U talking about riding that Ducati reminds me of my 99 R1 which was a absolute animal especially coming out of corners.. I went to a 180mm rear tire for more side wall contact due to its profile. It's cool seeing you ride around here in Austin..makes me want to get another bike. Had to sell mine bc of my kids. Yammie I dunno how old you are or if you grew up here in Austin but if you did do you remember wheelie world in north Austin before they finished tech ridge to I 35? Was just a sorta unfinished road a bunch of peeps used to gather and hangout and practice wheelies and ruin our tires, stuff like that

riding this bike hard on the street (or on the track or any bike even) requires really good braking technique. 1098 has insane brakes and no rider aids. getting from 45 to 100 on a twisty mountain road is easy. getting back down to 45 and slotting yourself into traffic after passing in the canyon requires a delicate hand on the brake. check out Nick Ienatsch and his videos (i've done his champions riding school and plan to go back if i can afford it): 100 points of grip, trail braking, etc. you HAVE to know this shit to ride this bike.

I had a lot of fun watching this vid. I have a 1098s tricolore, rexxer tuned, with slash cut Termis. I agree, this bike is a beast, a Total hooligan if you want. Unbelievable torque monster 😋. You need to know what you are doing if you try to tame this thing… 1/4 Mile, this bike is faster than a panigale ! And BTW a V4 get’s lot hotter than this bike. A little late to the party (I was riding bikes in Scotland for a week) but I kinda agree with a lot of the sentiments here. My '03 VFR doesn't even have ABS and while I'd love to give more modern bikes a try for all that the fancy electronics are making bikes better there's something to be said for that analogue feel. ICE bikes definitely peaked though, we could maybe do a little more with forced induction but it's likely downhill from here, I'm planning to buy an electric bike this winter and see what the future is like as that's where the real innovation is gonna be going forward.
