Just had my first bike wreck. Totaled my bike and ended up in the er. My gear saved my life had i not watched you videos i wouldn’t have been wearing the stuff i was thank you for being such a positive influence on everyone for wearing gear🙏 if you want the pics message me. I posted this yesterday on your video but just wanted you to see it. The bike is totaled but it was the least of my worries in the moment.

Bought a bike sight unseen one time, oil drain plug fell out during my 3rd or 4th ride. Was my first bike. Scary thing.

All the bolts on the bike, should include that bolt, too… If you don't understand that, you should not work on your bike. Take it to a shop. Oil change do not cost that much.

Did my first oil change on my bike (bought second hand), and the crush washer was so deformed, I couldn’t even get it off the drain bolt. I think the previous owner misinterpreted “crush washer”

@@FappinSteve That was the condition of the carburetor drain-plug on my Savage when I got it out to restore... There were other "issues" from having spent so much time just sitting in an over-heated garage/wood-shop so much since 1995... BUT that was probably the most egregious problem... Just had a competent shop re-bore and thread the bowl and replace the plug and sealing washer... AND the rest of the work was relatively straight forward... give or take some "damaged" but not "irredeemable" threads here and there. OH... I'll be replacing bolts and nuts over time, but only in two general circumstances... 1. It's damaged to a degree I can't feel responsible putting it back on the road like that. (obviously) 2. When I've got some spare time and cash to just get a bag of that class of fastener and start replacing "on principle" for future planning... (which as a tech' in general, I'm prone to do habitually anyway. I've had enough of those lessons.) ...BUT it's been worth shopping "used"... I'm riding a nice 1995 Suzuki Savage 650 that I JUST turned over 5K actual miles with about 800 bucks invested (and the tires and brake pads were almost as expensive as the bike)... ;o)

Don't over torque any bolt. Bolts have a limited amount of strength and when you over torque them, you put them close to what's called the plastic limit and it then doesn't take as much to break them. Remember someone who knows much more than you calculated those torque values in the manual and tested them.

OMG ... when I read "in gear" I thought "maybe to prevent to chain to move ?" I would never ever ever thought someone would think of "in gear with the engine running". What is next ? Stopping a chainsaw grabbing it with your hand ?

As long as your hands aren't near it, it's fine. Just don't rev the engine, let it idle. That said, I didn't find it saving me any sort of time or effort while spray-lubing the chain, so I'd say it's not worth the risk regardless

I personally cleaned my chain in gear this year... once... and I almost lost my finger when it took a ride between the chain and the sprocket... DO NOT TRY IT AT HOME

A week ago, this very thing happened to me; I've only got a little Duke and put it in first, bike wheel was probably only going 3 km an hour. I started to clean the chain on the paddock stand as I had probably 10 times before that, trusty dirty rag and Motul cleaning kit. I noticed a build-up of grease on the rea sprocket and thought it would be a good idea to clean that up while I'm at it, every bit helps, half a kilowatt here and there hehehe. So my monkey brain kicked in and I wrapped the rag around my index and thumb, cleaned each tooth as they came around faster and faster in gear. The rag got sucked in between the chain and sprocket and pulled my index in with it. I was very very lucky the bike was in first and doing a very slow speed... I have no idea how I got my finger out and didn't even need stitches but this was a very good reminder of what we are dealing with.

I learned most of this stuff from my dad who has always had Harleys and I learned the rest from dirt biking at a young age with friends. I still do polish the chain in gear but I hold a brush that's a foot long so my hands are not that close to the chain!

I'll still clean it on the outside like that, with a handle, not inside. As for clearance, I've seen shot clutches (cable & hydraulic) from thicker grips (Kuryakyn ISO) shortening throw to the point it couldn't be totally free from both drag & slip.

Don't have a bike yet but I've been watching your vids on gear and mechanical advice and I'm feeling increasingly educated as the brcu nears. I'm the type to purposely take things apart myself to find out how it works; so I expect to become real comfortable with my bike over time. Worst case scenario I end up having to actually put some real thought into it and or having to bring it down to my local motorcycle shop, best case is I learn some valuable information and gain confidence fixing my own bike.

I would like to touch on number 6. Last month my cousin was killed in an accident where his hoodie strings got caught in the gear while working under his 4 wheeler, that got twisted and ended up strangling him to death. Please never never never try cleaning a chain with the bike running, you're risking so much for 5 minutes of elbow grease. Please stay safe out there and spread the word to keep your family and friends safe. Go fast, don't die. 🙏

I felt lucky, not to loose my thumb as it got caught and dragged between the chain and chainwheel. My nail came off and I had trouble doing sports for 4 months. (Except for riding my bike, hehe) Take care guys

I torqued my rear axel nut to 47 ft-lbs, just EXACTLY like the owners manual says. Now is that old, slightly corroded torque wrench from the shed in spec? I don't know 🤷‍♂️

@@wizzardx666 I think Nebraska is a lil warmer than where I am but climate is very similar. Lots of rain these past two days. Here in Ontario it is more or less the same temps as you said 7-10 degrees Celsius (Somewhere between 43-50 Fahrenheit)

All advice mentioned is great. I order parts and wait for a day of rain to do service... Only work on one bike/vehicle at a time, and have helicoil kit on standby when you find out someone has messed up a thread for you... And absolutely keep your clutch fingers safe.

Here in high engine-ering Europe we put the bike on a good old stand that locks to the frame and we clean the chain in gear with a tool... so no fools will get their fingers turned into meatball paste ( also would advise holding on to the clutch, so you don't get hit in the head with the chain cleaning tool of your choice)... that part with the rag is scary.

The only one I will disagree with is 7. But... And this is very important...use loading straps to hold the bike in place like you would on a dyno.

I learned from an early age to never clean the chain while having the bike in gear one day my dad was cleaning his bike and was doing his chain on his motorcycle and let’s just say his thumb got caught in a rag and now he has 9 and a half fingers because of the incident

My winter to do list: rotors & pads, new radiator hoses, new clutch cable, fabricate a new front fender. Plenty more of "might as well do this" while I'm doing that. I am not sure about putting blue loctite on all your nuts and bolts. I clean my brakes so often won't that just gum up the holes? I always torque them to spec it's never been a problem but I always do a good pre-check. Never had one loose yet.

Years ago I was doing a large Ann Arbor, MI --> Columbus, OH --> Youngstown, OH --> Ann Arbor, MI Loop. On the leg to Youngstown, the bolts attaching the rightside upper fairing subframe to the frame decided to wave good-bye. Fortunately I made it OK to my cousins not far from Youngstown. He had a large cache of bolts and found a few which fit and worked perfectly. I didn't know about Loctite at that point, so I made a point of checking them at least once a year. They never gave me trouble again.

I don't have enough tools to get all the fairings removed from my motorcycle. I just check the engine oil, tire pressure, suspension rebounds, tire treads, chain lubrication, fuel level and the throttle cable slag before going on for a ride to work. I give my motorcycle a monthly clean up to remove those hardened muds on its mud guard and maintain the the bike shiny, good as new as the same day I got it from the shop. Nevertheless, these points are good to know too. I'll remember these before doing something stupid with my bike 😅

I spent three hours sweating my nads off in a hot garage last summer installing Koso Apollo heated grips that I thought would take 45 minutes, but now that it's October... totally worth it.

8:43 Been there. Was doing that to my CBR250R. Thankfully, I hadn't tightened the chain yet. Got the index finger on my right hand stuck. A tooth dug into the skin. Thankfully, no fractures or joint dislocations. Its been a decade and it still has a phccked up scar on it. Imagine it were a modern 600+ bike with chain already tightened. Ooowee, that would've been a spicy one.

well guess how much luck I had the chain chew a centimeter right of my right thumb. yes i tightend my chain before, but me being myself i thought the faster the better so i threw her iright into fifth gear and went on. i can say i now stay as far away as possible from moving chains

I live in Oregon. I ride in the rain. And as far as the cold. Just an extra jacket. I always rode in the desert on a dirt bike in winter.

The permanent lock-tight you heat up the bolt to get it lose. Like the brake disks. That is a tips from good mechanic. So I have not tried it my self. But pretty sure it works.

Heat often solves the issue and push comes to shove I weld m8 nuts on top of the disk bolts and impact them out. Only had that technique fail once and that was on a 60k plus 25 year old bike that had never had the disks changed. Bought a new wheel in the end!

Number 6 been there done that. I don’t recommend trying it ended up on the ER and was plastered fir three months because my thumb was crushed by the knuckle

Chains and sprockets don’t mix with rags and hands. I know a guy who hand his hand mangled from trying to clean a commercial baking machine with it running

Just want to add that another important reason to use a torque wrench is because bolt threads actually stretch every time you tighten them. That is why you are supposed to actually change your head bolts when you remove them.

That should only happen the first time you apply torque though. Engine heads may be different because you're also dealing with the bolts fighting repeated up-down movement, but working on 120mm mortar systems, they have this clamp that's a mount for the targeting computer. Since it's designed to attach to a cannon tube that wasn't designed with any external mounts in mind and is therefore completely smooth and round, it is held on with pure torque, perpendicular to the direction of the barrel. It's a series of several bolts and nuts that are torqued to 365 ftlbs each, but you only need to measure bolt stretch when installing new bolts, because if they stretch too much you start over with new parts. If you're within spec on a new install, you never need to measure stretch again because you torque them to the exact same level every time you de-install/re-install them, in 100ftlb increments in a certain sequence, until you get to 365 on each of them, then safety wire them all together. As long as they're re-installed properly after removal for maintenance, you can actually re-use the same hardware forever.

Red locktite hack, use a soldering iron to heat it up to break torque easier

Temperature doesn't matter as long as the roads are dry. Had to drive to work multiple times in -2 Celsius (28 Fahrenheit)

As a paramedic I seen a guy lube his chain in gear lost 3 fingers they couldn't re attach them. He won't be clutching any time soon

I had to change my tubes and tires last weekend. I watched a bunch of videos and figured I could knock it out in an hour. Nope. I'm not sure how long it ended up taking because I kept walking away out of frustration and coming back to it. Plus I'd take a break after each small victory. I'm hoping next time I'll be able to do it quicker...now that I've done it once.

Did my motorcycle tires the hard way, wrestling them in the dirt , with screwdrivers, tire spoons, and scratching up the rims, for 45 yrs. Finally bought a manual shop tire changer. Bout time! I actually don't dread doing it now.

Clearances! I put a custom tank on one of my bikes and never considered the fuel hosing. It fit on the frame no problemo - 6 hours of the day was spent cursing the $$$ I had spent for it. I was having my dinner outside and I dropped my spoon next to the bike and when I went to pick it up I had seen that the main fuel hose to the carby was kinked backwards because there was barely any space. Friggin lightbulb moment with my mouth full.............

I know a guy who's missing a couple fingertips from trying to clean the chain with his Harley in gear about 45 years ago. He lives with the permanent reminder.

A blowtorch is sometimes the most useful to work out the red locktite 🤙

Works great, yes. But while you're torching the bolt, you have to scream at it, "YOU THOUGHT I WAS PLAYING???". Or it won't work at all... my experience anyway.

No, it is not at all. That can make the bolt fall out. Or it can make it leak. Can make the bolt not go all the way in. And make all kinds of problems. A trick to not do that. Is only to take the bolt or nut, with your hand and turn it the wrong way. until it pops down into the threads.

My CB125F has very few bits of plastic on it, the ones I had to take off to get to the wiring I needed took literally 30 seconds each. There's like... one bolt. The rest is rubber grommets.

Another reason to not put your bike in gear while on a rear stand is if it has any traction control it might mess it up abd require a reset

I plead guilty to cleaning and lubing the chain when the bike is in gear and on the stand. I use a brush, not a rag, and the common sense that 48 years of riding experience has taught me. Grabbing a moving part with your hand has got to be number one on the list of "Great Ways to Fuck Yourself Up."

Yep, not bragging, but I stripped the mounting threads in an aluminum engine case using a 3/8" drive socket wrench.

As someone who's had their hand caught in a chain (thankfully not motorcycle) I was lucky enough for the tooth of the gear to go either side of my finger which was almost broken, took 2 people to get my hand out of it

Grinders are actually better off spinning freely as they're electric motors and spinning no load causes basically no wear as well as having the integrated fan cool them full blast. I buy cheap grinders cause I'm poor. I used to kill them inadvertently by using them heavily and never letting it spin up and cool itself back down during use.

Yeah, the chain has devastating potential. I went from motorcycle to vintage garden tractors back to bike and started snowmobiles this past year. Farm injuries on old tractors and even modern implements are horrific. Even just my chain driven snowblower or shaft drive tiller on a 80s Bolens could REALLY hurt you, especially a smaller, curious person. Be careful, it's not just 100mph and cages that can F you up. I was a medic in Afghanistan and said many times I would never again have a motorcycle. I've had 3 since, but finally grew up and learned about gear.

didnt know about the cleaning chain hazard, thanks for the warning, lucky me and I do it with the motorcycle off, however, my ebike is a different story, it is buttom pushed, so if you stop pressing the button, it stops, and its a bycicle, still, painful and unnecesary. Great video! I´ve had bolts come loose and I heard about glue but I didnt know there were different types of glue, interesting, thanx!

There are three or four grades of "Loc-Tite" thread-locker... Blue is "medium" and is the most popular... Red is "hgih" strength... BUT there's also "Low" and "Extreme" or "Super Duty" stuff out there. It's not always ALL "Loc-Tite" (company name)... SO worth being careful the first time or two you go buying the stuff... just to be precise about the product you want. ;o)

Put a clutch on my R1, of course , tourquing clutch bolts as required. Put a starter on it too, ( big job), you just have to know how to wrench to get all the other nuts and bolts tightened by hand, no torque specs. Work with someone experienced, or look up all torques, and use a torque wrench.

Got back home from work last night and noticed my chain was loose, put her up on the stand and my rear axle was on finger tight.. I think only thing holding it was the cotter pin. Stupid lucky nothing happened 👌🏽

I only buy bikes without plastic fairing, and if I do I break them anyways and put screws and fittings on there anyways because, man, the little plug things are a pain in the ass.

For whatever reason my sprocket cover actually had red Loc-Tite on it from the factory. I had to take the cover off the other day and it freaked me out a bit because I thought I was cross-threading the bike when I was putting it back on.

Cleaning the chain in gear - guilty as charged but I do have the plan B ready - using the emergency stop ( pull the kick stand down)

A chainsaw has the safety physically disconnecting the chain from everything. The bike does not, and depending on engine size and cylinder count, it has a lot of momentum in it. It has a flywheel, remember? Even that little energy stored in the engine momentum is enough. Human tissue and bones are no match for hardened steel of gears and chain.

The only thing I've said would take 30 minutes and actually did was when I replaced my busted tail light with a new one of the same brand and model, no wiring or anything to change, just plug it and bolt it.

Did the chain cleaner in gear one.....lucky to barely lose abt 1/2 inch of the tip of my thumb on right hand. Was sitting there laughing about it bc i realized immediately how lucky I was it wasn't whole thumb or other fingers.

Or if you live in Arizona! We ride our motorcycle bikaroos almost all year long here in the Phoenix area well pretty much all of the southern parts of Az. Well maybe in February for 2 or 3 weeks that the weather gets down to 45 degrees. Yes 45 degrees is cold here in Az. But hey those 3 weeks you can use that time to add some more or change up some customizations and or service your bike and before you know it it's March and time to ride again... 😁

I think in terms of setting aside a morning or afternoon. It removes the pressure to hurry, vastly increasing the odds of doing it right.

I have developed a formula that may help. Take the time that you think the job will take and square it. Add to that the time that you don't have to complete the job. Subtract from the sum of those the time it usually takes for your wife/partner to get angry. If the answer is tomorrow, next weekend, by the end of the month or Christmas then your calculations are almost certainly correct.

Took me 2 hours if not a little more to change a throttle cable because whoever had the bike before me bought cheap levers and the throttle cable started being cut by the clutch lever. 🤦‍♂️

I work with small engines. Steel bolt through the valve cover into an aluminum cylinder head. Ripped. The. Thread's. Clean. Out. Did that shit ONCE, never again

300 ninja and I can take all plastics off in 20min, there are only three different sized bolts and I use an impact driver for removal only. Also I run mine on the stand in gear. If you do things safely you won't have an issue. Like keep your hands covering the clutch and brake.(never had it come off the stand) And how is no load going to hurt your engine, stress/load on the engine is what wears it out. It's like the difference between driving a truck and driving a truck with a 40ft trailer, which one do you think will need Trans work first?

"This will be easy". Yup, that was me trying to install the bash plate on my 701 sumo. "Oh, I don't have locktite". Spend an hour going to the store to grab some (yes it was blue lol). Get back, everything starts to come together smoothly and then....spend upwards of 2+ hours trying to screw the the plate to the bike because the holes on the moulded plastic bash plate don't quite line up 100% with the holes on the bike frame without using a herculean amount of force to flex the plastic plate into place. Except while you're doing that you can't screw the screws in because your hands are tied up. Proceed to squirm for the next 2+ hours to try and figure out a way to muscle the plate into place while being able to apply the screws by yourself. Oh what a time that was. By far the hardest to install mod on that bike so far. Would've been a quick easy job if I had someone to help me with a second pair of hands. Alas I live alone.

Maybe enlarge the holes in the bash plate with a drill and bit or a round file?

@@elevationmoto6208 Nah that wouldn't have worked. Enlarging them would've meant the screws wouldn't hold as securely there anymore. Plus, the holes weren't on the plastic part itself, but on a connected metal bracket which is what actually connects and screws to the bike frame. It's all moot now anyway as I did eventually after much struggling get the screws in.

Put them all in just barely and keep all loose before tightening any. If you tighten one first you will never get the rest to thread in. Common issue with lots of things….

I had a similar issue with an aluminium (Aussie, that’s how we say it) bash plate on a recently acquired used BMW F650GS. My fix was to take a hammer and bash the plate about the garage floor to return it to its original shape. I still had to elongate a couple of holes. I had just taken the plate off to properly remove years of baked on dirt and oil. It took way too long. Beats me why anyone would ride a bike like this as if it’s indestructible. Totally trashed rear wheel bearings and headset bearings are further evidence of why some people shouldn’t have nice things.

usually they say to lay it on its side to do that, mine went right on after I did since it was way easier to push on, but since you have a sumo I assume you dont want to scratch it

There are some cleaning brushes for chaincleaning in gear. I would never use my hands and clean in gear.

I have a 90 zx 7 h2 and the fairings actualy fo only take 10 minutes to remove lol its 10 bolts total just took them off today for my winter work on it

👍 Loved the early gen ZX7s especially the black and gray one! Actually miss all those late 80s and early 90s sportbikes.... Those gen FZRs, GSXRs, CBRs, Ducs and Ninjas were such great looking bikes. My 93 ZX7 I still regret letting go.....

8:43 Jokes on you, applying chain cleaner, blowing it out and lubing takes that way 5 minutes. Granted, my fingers don't come closer than 20 cm to the chain, and brushing that way is a no go.

jokes on you, I already have cold nerve damage in my hands, so they just get tingly lol Edit: i bought an exhaust for my zx6r thinking it would take an hour max. got the servo and cables out no problem but the bolt holding the stepdown cat on stripped and it gradually turned into a 5 day job. I even broke a speedout bit in the hex head. Please manufacturers stop using near flush hex bolts for exhausts. just put a normal bolt on there.

You CAN buy and replace the hex-bolts with equivalent other bolts... just REMEMBER FOR THE LOVE OF GOD to look up the spec's in your tech-book for the bike... Match or exceed the "class" of bolts according to the "tools and parts" section at the beginning of the book... There are certain applications for which I have a highly temperamental aversion to certain kinds of bolts... the reaction can be SO spontaneous as to force me to violently swing or even hurl large, heavy hammers at things and even people. ;o)
