I actually disagree on 4 out of 7 features mentioned. - Keyless ignition is SUPER convenient - absolutely love it despite it being less secure. - Smartphone connectivity is a nice feature - most importantly to change music tracks from bike UI as well as tracking nice places I have visited - Quick shifters when done right are quite a convenient thing - Combined braking - also feels like a nice thing if you ride relatively calm. And for the track you can disable it. Or maybe it's just BMW S1000XR had all of this features implemented nicely :D

My tiger 1200 has all of these features and they are all really awesome. And the keyless ignition isn't any less secure. People don't realize that most bike manufacturers only have 15-20 key cuts anyway, so your traditional key can access tens of thousands of bikes out there. Also, no idea what YN is talking about with combined braking... It is literally always safe (and often better) to use the rear brake when you use the front brake.

I think keyless ignition on a bike js one of the most stupid things. Not that something is inherently wrong with it, but it is part of an experience of riding motorcycles. I have it on a car, and love it there, but car for me is just a mode of transportation. On a bike, I love starting the bike with putting a key and twisting it. Same as shifting gears. Will never accept automatic transmission on a bike, because all of these features are taking away from the experience of being perfectly aware and in connection with your bike
@DR-pu5hm
@DR-pu5hm Ай бұрын
@@fetB How is it really any less secure? You do realize that most manufacturers only have a handful of key cuts, right? Most decent size dealerships will have multiple bikes with the same key pattern. Physical keys haven't been a security measure for decades. When I was shopping for my last bike the dealership (Ducati/Triumph) gave me the wrong key for the Multistrada I wanted to test. After putting the key in and turning it and failing to start I called the sales person over. They gave me the key to the Multistrada next to me. Two bikes literally next to each other on the floor with the same exact key pattern. The only thing that protected the bike was the wireless fob. Hell- Honda only has around 20 total cuts across all models since 2016. If you have a 2016+ Honda bike- your key will physically fit 1 out of 20 2016+ Honda bikes- all models. Key tumblers take mere minutes to bypass even if you don' have a key. It has always been the fobs that provide protection. Websites sell "quick pick" tools for most bikes (and cars)- or alternatively you can hotwire just about any bike with minimal mechanical knowledge. Full keyless bikes are often more secure because you can turn they fob off completely so it doesn't broadcast signal, preventing sniffing/scraping.

@@CaptainFeathersword To each his own, I guess. That is why I think that keyless ignition is a good thing to have in addition to a key. People like me can use the fob, and people who don't like fobs can just leave theirs at home (or... hell... smash it with a hammer if you'd like) and use the key the old fashion way. I see keyless ignition on a motorcycle the same way I see air conditioning or a radio in a car: it should be there if you want to use it, but using it shouldn't be required in order to use the car.

Just because you find electronics on a bike difficult to service and maintain, does not mean that there won't be smarter people taking advantage of your obsolescence. Adaptive and keen learners will find a way to maintain their bikes either way. Some of them will build businesses outclassing existing motorcycle technicians, ensuring the bikes can still run fine 30 years down the road. I'm sure that's already happening in the car scene anyway.

My 2014 Ducati Diavel Strada is keyless and I effing hate it. The frequency is easily blocked or overpowered by other nearby tech that uses the same frequency, sometimes requiring placing it under the sear at the antenna for it to be "heard". The fob is huge and ubber clunky when unlocking the gas cap. Luckily, a manual code can be entered if the fob is not present, assuming the damn ON button works (50/50 chance of that). Its basic ABS & traction control are nice and saved my bacon a couple of times.

As a trucker, I've been dealing with adaptive cruise control for 15 years. Even in a truck that's only 2 years old, newer than my motorcycle, it still occasionally gets triggered to brake by shadows and changing pavement colors. Combined Braking is mandatory in many countries, including being part of the EURO 4/5/6 standards. I don't know what it like is the US/Canada, but over here (UK) it doesn't apply equal pressure/braking to both wheels irrespective of which brake was activated - it's a graded response, with the activated brake taking most of the control unless heavy braking is required. At very slow speeds, or parking type manoeuvres I haven't ever noticed one brake interfere with the one I am using.

Blindspot detection, your left and right mirrors, both on the motorcycle and a car should be set so they show you your Blindspot. That’s why you have two mirrors on both sides of a vehicle. Then you just need to move your head a little bit to the left or the right to see directly behind you and on the car, you just use the center mirror. and even when you change lanes on a bike, you literally just need to kind of move your shoulders to one side or the other and then you can see a little more of that Blindspot, which remove the necessity to turn all the way and look and take your eyes off the front.
@kenbrown2808
@kenbrown2808 3 ай бұрын

When you start talking to cruiser riders and hear their... opinions... on how brakes work and hear from them about why you should ONLY ever use the rear brake, it actually makes a lot of sense that many big bikes had linked brakes where the rear brake pedal also did some amount of front braking, basically just to help save idiots from themselves. I believe there were even quite a few accident statistics to back up that a good percentage of motorcycle accidents happened when a rider ONLY applied the rear brake and plowed into something because they simply didn't use their primary brake. 5th gen Goldwings, VTX1800s, Concours 14, FJR1300, etc. were like this where the front brakes only activates the front brakes, but the rear brakes does some front braking as well. This isn't a bad thing for safety, especially if you are more used to driving a car where panic mode is just slam your right foot on the brake in an emergency and you might not react on the front brake lever as fast. I cant comment on the newer systems where both brakes controls operate both front and rear brakes, as I havent used them yet.

Not an expert here. I have only ridden a cruiser a handful of times. I was a sport bike rider but on a TDY I did not have a vehicle, my friend let me use his cruiser, very different breaking techniques. I learned that real fast, almost dumped it when the front tire slid. I have never had a bike with either linked or ABS, I think they would be useful on a cruiser, not sure about the linked brakes for a spot bike though. Going straight, sure, hitting corners at speed while leaning... I guess you would have to get used to it. I would say I would never want linked brakes without ABS.

Keyless Ignition: I had this on a rental bike that was identical to mine except for Keyless Ignition and Quickshifter. I agree that it offers no value because I still needed the mechanical key to open the BMW panniers. I press it once to turn off the ignition and then press and hold it to lock the forks. Half the time I did not hold it long enough to lock and, instead, the ignition came on again. Using a keyed ignition to turn off and lock was faster. Blind Spot Detection: You're right except I occasionally start to move over before I finish a head check. Totally my fault but traffic changes fast and I am not perfect. Smartphone connectivity: The guy who rear-ended me claimed I slammed on my brakes. I called up the ride data and played it for the cop to prove I was not braking at all! The dude got a ticket. I also like that I can look at my phone to see if the tires need air and how many more miles left in the tank. Quickshifter: On a BMW F900XR, the quickshifter is not smooth. I am smoother doing a clutchless shift with a well-timed throttle blip.

You know, the quick shifter on the 8R isn't bad on the downs once things get broken in a bit more. Seemed like around the 1k mile mark I noticed the quick shifter getting much better on both up and downs. I would suggest during break in, use it a few times on the up, but as you rack up the miles and get some fresh fluids in you'll find it get even better. It's still not perfect on the downs, and it does feel like you really gotta be firm with the down shift.

I have linked brakes on my BMW K1200rs. Most of the time it is pretty transparent but when braking hard on uneven asphalt, the rear gets light, the ABS kicks in and the rear wheel chatters. The other downside is that I go through rear brake pads at a hellacious rate. It also prevents the hooligan in me from doing burnouts.😇

Keyless ignition is a very useful and almost necessary system in places where motorcycle theft is a common occurrence. In my personal case, my KTM Duke was stolen 18 months ago, and they have tried to steal my current Svartpilen three times since then, without success thanks to the alarm system I have installed. However, I have had to repair or replace the lock each time, something that could have been avoided if it didn’t have a lock that could be forced to start the motorcycle.

My thoughts on the Blind Spot Detection…I currently ride a 2017 Africa Twin. So no BSD on mine, and honestly, my bikes set up for more off highway riding, so BSD is even less important. That said, I'm also 51 years old, and I'll tell you this, my neck is in a perpetual state of minor, nagging pain. Looking hard to the left or right, causes an annoying pain and I am in fact somewhat limited in doing so. I can now say, that although I would not actively search out a bike with this feature……like the DCT option from Honda, I can see how this feature would enable a rider to enjoy the hobby longer and even keep riders riding longer. Getting old sucks, but it does get easier to admit we didn't actually know everything like we thought we did when we were young guns🤔.

Motorcycling is still very niche in North America and adding features that could be mistaken for other things or allow easier theft (as with the keyless fob) are not just farkles but potentially dangerous, the last thing we need is to port over the same issues cars have and just make them far more deadly to us, the rider. This goes doubly so for anything/one that says "mount your phone on your handlebars". Please don't. Check your GPS at a stop, plan your route, if you miss a turn or w/e stop again, check, plan again... eventually you get really good at both planning and navigating!

I believe it was Kinga from On Her Bike who dropped a key fob while she was riding. The bike did not shut off, but it wouldn't start when she stopped a few miles down the road. Attach a meter of caution tape to your key fob jic. Also, you'll want to get one of those faraday cage sleeves to store your key when you're not on the bike. Thieves can copy the signal from your key fob and use it to start your bike.

Strictly use it for tracking maintenance at this point, because it also syncs with their website and dealer network, but just like you said with the Kawi one - it's clunky, it's buggy... motorcycle companies aren't software companies (don't get me started on how bad Indian/Polaris' RideCommand infotainment is).
