The PO 2 was a training aircraft that was used in flying clubs before the war. From here in Russia there were many trained pilots who know how to fly this plane well. There were quite a few women among them. When the second world war began, women volunteered for the front. They might have been nurses or radio operators, but they could fly well and they formed a separate night bombing regiment, No. 588. They flew on PO 2 , it had a very strong frame made of aviation plywood and was covered with a special fabric. The bullets went right through him, and he flew on. The aircraft had dual controls, which also contributed to its survivability. In fact, the plane "Night witches" was what is now called a drone. According to its characteristics, it was a manned drone that delivered bombs to the exact address in complete silence, and disappeared into the night sky. Admirable is the fact that these planes were flown by young girls who were 17-25 years old. During the night, they made 5-6 sorties to the near rear of the enemy. They took a lot of risks, their flying skills helped them in the fight against the fascist anti-aircraft gunners.

Think one of reasons women got PO 2 was because standard bomber, PE 2, required insane muscle strength to control. Even male pilots often struggled to get it out of bombing dive.

She did that for several reasons. 1. missing pilot of downed plane was treated as MIA, probably - captured or even defected. Her girls refused to wear the parachutes, so the crash site was enough to confirm heroical KIA instead of MIA. Finding these sites she removed any, even very pale spots of suspicions from their names. 2. she was kinda "adopting mother" for them, and she respected the memories of her "step-daughters"

@@Sergei_Agarkoff The problem with bombing missions in ww1 era aircraft is that they would be flying so low that by the time you were able to climb out of the cockpit, pull the ripcord and allow the parachute to inflate and slow you down to a reasonable speed, you would already have hit the ground. Parachutes weren't really much help and just got in the way.

It's a shame that some companies like EA would disrespect females so much in BF5 as to creative robotic arm fake stories to represent women. Don't forget about the snipers, recon units, AA units, field medics... But since most of them who experienced heavy battles were Soviet, and EA decided not to include USSR campaign at all, it's not a big surprise there's not much stories left. And EA was too lazy to dig into real French/Italian/Polish/etc. resistance/guerilla operations where women where actually involved, or considered them not to be epic enough... assigning the feat of a group of saboteurs to a fictional woman instead.

More fun facts about the Po-2 they flew, the low wing loading of a bi-plane (bi-planes had been outdated for 5-8 years by that point) meant it could glide without engine power for much longer than monoplanes like Yaks or MiGs and the silent approach from above proved useful in part because of this. A secondary factor was something I've read but I can't find any concrete evidence for right now (so consider it as plausible), German AA guns had some target lead detection which was fairly early technology at the time and the Po-2 was too slow for it to track properly, contributing to the bombing success. Canvas planes were also in general remarkably resilient to small punctures so long as those did not hit the pilot or required control surface.

@@TheAviationGuyID True. This also applies to the "Rosie the Rocketeer", an american grasshopper recon aircraft fitted with bazookas on its wings. Please note that women's clothes were not a part of ostracizm by army command, it was simply unavailable until, I believe, 1944. Also later this reg went *all* women, even technicians were female. Also, in 1943 it became 46th guard night bombing Taman of Red Banner and Lenin orders regiment. Red Banner order and Lenin order are awards they received for their service, while Taman is just an honorary title I believe

In April of 2019,as a birthday present to myself,I was one of the passengers of an operational Po-2 planes(12 of them are left,6 of them are operational). Yes,it is a slow,but calm plane,easily controllable. I did remember, that the first instruction to step inside the cockpit was, 'DO NOT STEP ON THE WING, it might break' :) The second was 'MIND YOUR HEAD'...I hit the center part of the top wings,the maintenance crew and the pilot gave me a little smile...the designer of the plane already thought about idiots like me,so he put a strengthening element into the top wings,at the center :D So neither me nor the plane was hurt too much.

Did you you know Po-2 can fly backwards, a 40km/h wing from the front is enough to give it lift while blowing it backwards.

Mr Yarnhub Sir, I am truly grateful to you for posting such quality videos that shed more light on the Soviet fight against the Nazis. I grew up to history books teaching us that the US, and to a lesser extent UK, won WW2. It was only much later while researching on the internet I learnt the real fight was on the Eastern Front where 8/10 Nazis were accounted for by the Soviets. Thank you again and keep up the good work.

What's cooler than telling a true story? Telling it in rock music! To think that they also need to be close on the front lines with their outdated planes, turn off their engines while doing their bombing runs, and fly at night is absolutely amazing. This is a part of forgotten history that should known. BTW, I like so much sabaton that I keep "the last stand" as my ring tone. Great video as always!

Gotta say, this is probably my favorite video of you guys' so far; the collab with Sabaton was perfect. Hearing the subtle and familiar riffs of the song while your narrating, and seeing Sabaton's signature S on the plane propellers really set the mood. On a more somber note, you guys did a good job on the animation all around; in particular, you nailed the animation and expressions of Yevdokia Rachkevich. She genuinely looks upset after crossing off the names, and her animation of her searching for the girls' bodies after the war really made you feel for her. Call me a sap if you want, but I think more of these stories need to be told; I'm using the Night Witches in a book I plan on writing, and I'm hoping I can do them justice.

I'm a World war two buff especially aviation,never heard of these pilots thankyou so much for their story.They should make a movie about these amazing pilots. Wonder how many of those air cobra pilots would have liked attacking a target hundreds of miles an hour slower than what they flew at!" I think not many."
@barneydenstad21483 жыл бұрын
As they did 5-10 sorties a night, it means their airfield was very near the front. Which means, airfield must be darkedned, to stop up prowling german night bombers and fighters.... And thus; they had to start and land perhaps even 10 times more or less in pitch black... A great feat for both pilots and navigators... In Poland they could make even more sorties a night.... Probably because Luftwaffe was much weaker, and thus, they had the luxury of some light in the airfield... Much easier to find the airfield, and much easier to land and start.

"At her signal, the pilot would cut the engines and swoop in slowly, silently. Dropping their bombs, dealing death from above. Unexpected. Undetected. Stealth perfected." 2:41 legitimately gives me goose bumps, connecting that to the songs' lyrics is just so cool.
@gabrielsistonamoca69634 жыл бұрын
Rudel mentioned this squadron in his book, it says they usually turn off their engine when approaching their target then they can only hear the whistle of the falling bombs. although their not that destructive but they are very annoying since they usually target airfields.
@evilbabai70834 жыл бұрын
Well, being at the frontline and knowing a bomb can suddenly drop out of nowhere while you're sleeping is little bit more than just annoying, no matter what chances are (especially if you hear them exploding around you every night) - after a few days of such nightly entertainment, you would wish one of this bombs got you already (if you manage to not to get killed because of being exhausted during the day)...
