I’m a serious knitter, so this is something I’ve come across many times using Lily Sugar n’ Cream Cotton. I recently decided to learn to crochet to expand my skill set and it seems like the splitting problem occurs more when crocheting. I found this video after google searching, “How to fix cotton yarn that splits easily”. Your article explains the reasoning behind this issue very well. I clicked on the link to watch your video, and was VERY excited when I noticed how you hold the working yarn! You’re the only other person I’ve seen using your middle finger, sort of like a lever, and I’ve watched hundreds of video tutorials teaching myself! Thank you for this excellent video and information 😊

I've been using this crochet "counter-clockwise" yarn over for 9 days now and the results are amazing. Not all my yarn overs are counter-clockwise - only about 65% to 70% of my yarn overs are bc I need more time to practice - but this method is absolutely keeping my yarn from untwisting and separating. I'm a new crocheter and do a lot of frogging so lots of my yarn becomes unusable bc of the untwisting and splitting. Once it untwists its really hard to get it back to a normal twist. Thanks so much to this channel for teaching us how to stop the dreaded untwisted yarn split!!!👏👏👌👌

Omg you just fix my problem. Working with bamboo that has so many plys! And a 2.5 crochet hook.

Another tip: inline hooks. Good ol' Susan Bates-style! I tried it tonight with a splitty yarn and the inline hook really grabs onto those strands. I tried it with YarnBee's (Hobby Lobby) Bambootiful, which is 50% Cotton & 50% Viscose. Yarn Weight: 3. Combined with this counterclockwise method, it may act like a normal yarn. Knife hold fares better than pencil hold as well (I am forcing myself to learn knife hold due to arthritis - it's gentler).

I've just come back to crochet after many years and I'm starting to regret it. I have used pure cotton in the past and splitting was a problem then. It's no better now. Can you do that reverse wind while doing a starting chain? I've tried and I can't make it work... it just makes the chain crooked and ugly. I'm having great difficulty getting started, so some advice or a video of you chaining using this technique would help. Please 🙏 I even bought some 50/50 cotton/acrylic yarn... I hate acrylic and it hasn't even helped. I even bought a tensioning ring, to take me a step further out of the equation... that's no better either. I know it's the yarn, not me... but I can't seem to overcome it when creating a starting chain. It's getting very frustrating!

Can you do the same thing with a double crochet to make the post? The y/o before inserting the hook?

Yes, it works just the same. It just takes a bit of getting used to maneuvering the crochet hook!

@@YarnSub Thanks! I will try it.

This is actually how I crochet and I still have a problem with it. I have to add twist to the yarn by rolling it. I've used other methods to add twist as well, but it's all time consuming.

Does it make a difference whether you start with a loosely-plied yarn in the first place Fuzzybudget?
@Fuzzybudget7 жыл бұрын
Probably...some definitely has a nicer twist while others are much looser, but I've had all kinds of yarn get really stringy on me.

Doing 100% of crochet yarn overs counter-clockwise can be difficult for some, myself included. However I've found if I can just do at least 65% of my yarn overs counter-clockwise it still will stop the untwisting and splitting. This method is going to save me lots of yarn that would otherwise be unusable.

Omg.....its gonna be hard to learn how to keep the correct crochet tension with this stitch, never mind just learning how to do it! Its so totally opposite. But thats the point, isnt it? I simply hate how my yarn untwists & splits when I crochet so it looks like I have no choice but to learn the new counter-clockwise "yarn-over." Yikes.
