And the Portuguese also invaded Sultanate of Malacca (current location Malaysia) for 130 years in 1511 -1641. Destroying Malacca and killing thousands of Malay Muslim. Since that day, the Malacca Empire was declining. Then came the Dutch. Then came the British. We gained independence only in 1957.

I understand this period of the 15th century also coincided with the rise of the Ottoman Empire. Therefore they might have been a power in Europe but not in the world as that was the start of the rise of the Ottoman Empire with the capture of Constantinople in 1453 by Mehmet II. It is claimed that Vasco da Gama wanted to go to Mecca through the red sea but was forced to divert to India when he discovered the presence of the Ottoman Turkish Navy plying the red sea.

Dear Sheik. Thanks for another lesson from History. And for mentioning how the earthquake of Lisbon led to the anti religious trend firstly amongst the enlightenments thinkers and then to European society at large. Subuhannal Allah. Today Portugal is not even a G7 country and Angola one of its former colonies is making huge investments their. I read that a lot of the money that fuelled the Portuguese domination was from the Knights Templars. To make our history more concrete we should bring it to the big screen. A movie on the "Battle of Socartra" would be nice. Where are the new Musthapha Akkads? 😢

With all the respect and love and sympathy, I benefited a lot from the khatira, didn't know about the earthquake, but the anti-colonial narrative is pretty naive. It's not like the colonisers were bad and violent and the colonised were all peaceful, smiling, heaven-like societies. World was and is absolutely filled with violence. Arab bedouins on the desert used to rob, steal, attack, and often kill Hajj pilgrims. Countries and tribes in muslim lands used to fight, slaughter and anihilate each other all the time just like people did and do in any other part of the world. Colonisers did a lot of bad stuff but the process of colonisation in itself was historically unavoidable once Europe gained such a gigantic technological and scientific advantage over the rest of the globe. If not for colonisation big chunks of Africa would now look like Papua New Guinea. Same goes for south America.
