I remember Blue from Overly Sarcastic Productions gushing about how historically accurate Assassin's Creed 2 was. But I don't think he's amongst the majority. The man loves history, so it was natural that he would compliment that game specifically for what it did. To me, the series exists as a way to explore different settings and timeperiods, but I feel setting it in Japan would only go to show how much better other developers have interpreted the setting. Ghost of Tsushima is one of the most beloved games in Japan and they love how they depicted it. And Sekiro's one of my all-time fave games. Ghost's depiction is a realistic but romanticised view of old Japan's enviroment. Sekiro's leans on the fantastical elements, alongside depiction of Buddhism mythos and themes. Both games do it so well I don't feel Ubisoft could offer much new.

Not that it really matters, but just to clarify I was referring to Hideyoshi's failed invasions of Korea with that chat message not the WW2 one as it would fit in the time period of the game. Honestly there is one thing i hope this game does well, and that's utilize the way the the templars spread with religion. Christian spread into feudal japan with trade at the time was a big deal, that's why the 2 Shogunates after Oda's pretty harshly persecuted it, but Nobunaga set himself apart by tolerating it as a way to encourage foreign trade in his regions, bringing more guns to fuel his conquest. Templars being, symbolically, very heavily tied to Christianity would make this interesting, as Yasuke would have to deal with his own Daimiyo's actions being why the Templars have so much sway where they do, meanwhile the other clans' resistance would make influencing them more difficult.
@fluidthought427 ай бұрын
That'd be strange framing since Yasuke arrived in Japan as a bodyguard to a priest so that would make Yasuke, knowingly or not, Templar affiliated. Plus that would "justify" the brutal repression of Christians under later rulers so that would be extra fucked.

I think everyone butthurt about this are just people that have always overestimated the extent at which AC is historically accurate. It shouldn’t matter what the real Yasuke was like. We are reliving our ancestors memories using a computer chair so we can find magical artifacts from dead gods. Black man is the least of our worries. The mirage protag is literally a Norse god

Everyone's mad about Yasuke when they should be mad about another fucking Sengoku period story. This shit's been done to death. Ghost of Tsushima was about something the average videogamer knew nothing about, so it was interesting off the bat. Rise of the Ronin takes place during the Bakumatsu, which most westerners only know the barebones of. But at this point if you have a minor interest in japanese games or anime, you probably know a lot about the fucking Sengoku period. Why not do something about the rise of the Kamakura and the implementation of the shogunate? Or the Asuka period and the struggles of integrating Buddhism and Shintoism? AssCreed is a known brand, if you just say "Assassins Creed Japan" you could do anything you want, you don't have to rely on the goddamned Sengoku again.

I mean, the difference is every other AC protag was a fictional character. This is the first time they’re using a historical figure as a protag. So ya it’s kind of disappointing that we finally get AC set in japan, and the first AC to use a real person as the protag, and they choose some guy that barely has any written history about him who it’s debatable that he was even actually a samurai instead of any number of other well known japanese historical figures that have way more relevance and importance to the setting.

@omegaxtrigun Counterpoint: did people expect any Ass Creed game to have playable real historical figures? They used fictional characters because it allows them to do whatever they want narratively speaking. So picking a real guy who isn't as well documented would work just fine for that. Still will suck and Yasuke definitely was picked for Diversity Points, but the argument that Ubisoft should've chosen an important historical character is weird because they never did that before ever, nor were people asking for it because the in game justification is "well the Templar write the history books so they hide the _real_ cool and super awesome Assassins out of history" (hence why Ezio and Edward aren't known as well as the Borgias and Blackbeard).
@yarution3677 ай бұрын

I think there's a lot of potential for a game revolving around this period of time; largely because you could have two wildly different interpretations of Nobunaga that can meet in the middle but I don't trust Ubisoft to execute it well, if at all. The only game that even sort of nailed it was Samurai Warriors 5 since you got to see Nobunaga's rise from being just the Fool of Owari to the Demon King of the Sixth Heaven and to his ultimate betrayal and death by Mitsuhide.

The issue with Yasuke shouldn't be that he's black, it should be that he's a playable character. Why are we playing as a historical character in an Assassin Creed? Never before has this happened. Yasuke shoulda been the Da Vinci of Shadows, a major ally who can get you in contact with Nobunaga or something. That's always been the point of the Assassins, rubbing shoulders with legendary figures of history and taking part in major events but in a way where it's explainable why they "never appeared" in actual historical tellings of those events. Black Flag will likely always be the best example of this cuz there were so many pirates running around back then, of course Edward would get lost in the mix.

The problem is that it's obvious why they're doing it. Hardly a coincidence that they break the mold of OCs being the MC of their games, while the "real" people are relegated to NPC quest givers. Or that it's already been proven that there was originally a different character that they replaced with Yasuke. Sure, they're trying to pull a Blizzard and using the pandering to hide their nonsense, but just as many people are pointing out the nonsense price tag as they are the push of "woke" elements. Trying to wave it off as "weirdos being weirdos" just detracts from the fact that this is still a big issue with the industry. Hardly anyone would've cared if Yasuke was an NPC that interacted with the story even if he wasn't completely "historically accurate". Probably could've done something interesting if they focused on him actually being a glorified mascot. Just as no one cared about him being in Nioh.
