When he hugged them, Natasha pushed him away immediately but Yelena stayed hugging him until she said to let go because he smelled bad, not because she actually hates him. He loves his girls, especially Yelena who still thought like him enough because she was still in that environment. For him and the way he was raised, sending his daughters to the red room was the way to make them successful. He did it out of love and was so proud of them for being top of their fields. We think murder is bad like Natasha does now and is offended by him being good with it, so he is a bad dad for putting them through that, but to him that was good to make them strong and successful. Yelena was top of her game and Natasha became an Avenger because of his decision, whether the road there was terrible or not. He didn’t ask about them because he was clearly keeping an eye on them all those years to know everything they had done, proud. Also, when he said the mission of them as a family in America was boring, he didn’t mean them being his daughters was boring or bad, he meant that being a super-soldier doing mundane and menial tasks at his job there was boring. He missed being Red Guardian because he felt useful then, but it had nothing to do with his love for his daughters. He still remembered Yelena’s favorite song from then and all their good father-daughter times. His story to Yelena was him trying to comment with her as his daughter by telling her about his father saving and protecting him, like he felt he did for them. In the end, he even went against orders and gave up everything to save them.

In my marvel universe series Red Guardian and the winter guard realize what kind of false heroes they are. They stop working for the government and all decide to be like the avengers. During that journey they all go through different character arcs. Two examples from the team are for example: Crimson Dynamo, that more or less wants to burry the battle axe with Iron Man. Ursa Major, that realizes how other mutants suffer and how little he cared in the past. Red Guardian’s arc would make us see him striving to become an symbol of his country just like Captain America. The only problem for the winter guard is that few heroes actually likes them. For good reason of course. The only heroes that doesn’t hate them are few of the young avengers . Barely. Sadly many of the young avengers knew about the winter guard in different ways. - Patriot, Hawkeye (Kate Bishop), Falcon (Joaquin Torres) knew thanks to their respective mentors. - Wiccan, Speed, Stature, Wasp (Nadia Van Dyne) knew thanks to their parents. - Ms. Marvel and America Chavez had read about one or three about the winter guard’s battles with the Avengers. … the guard is just lucky they haven’t fought any of these kids. …. And there where also many other specific heroes that hated them more than others. Those being. - Winter Soldier, as he had done a mission with them back when he was brainwashed and that mission…. Was nasty. - Black Panther, as the guard had tried to steal vibranium once. - U.S. Agent, it’s mostly John’s own “self loathing” since Alexei reminds him to much about himself back when. - She Hulk, as it’s revealed that the Russian government had tried to brainwash her once to destroy a village and make the Winter Guard look good. So… yeah.
