Wolves and bison

Two wolves of the Junction Butte pack in Yellowstone National Park approach a bison that is standing over a dead newborn calf, trying to get some bites. The bison defends fiercely. Heat waves all over the video, unfortunately.

Seriously sad. Less than 24 hours after my son was born we had to return to the hospital to have him get shots and they kept him because of his billies count. I felt the same way as the Buffalo. I knew in my head he would be ok. But I had been on a three day high having him after being married for eleven years, and my heart would not allow for the separation. After another 8 gruesome hours at the hospital the nurses convinced me to go home and get some rest...I knew they were right. I had been sleeping in the chair next to his little crib on and off....I knew I desperately needed sleep. But I know the feeling...sad this Mother Buffalo did not have the time to say goodbye and was put in that position of immediate defensive behavior.

That bison is either small as hell or they’re some big ass wolves. Either way, awesome footage where you gotta feel bad for the mother.

interesting how bison protect even a dead calf, so wolves so not get used to any bison being an easy meal. with the mechanism for this behaviour being maternal grieving.

Yes, the bison calf was already dead. Wolves tried to get it away from the cow, but she defended it fiercely.
