As a future guest, I'd like to see an interview with KZbinr and published author, Japanese North Korean defector Kim Joosung 金柱聖 who was born in Japan and defected to North Korea then defected to South Korea where he resides. He has lived in Japan for 14 years, North Korea for 32 years, and now in South Korea for 14 years. The interview would probably have to be in Korean with subtitles but his perspective is fascinating and so different from Yeonmi. Striking was his identity as a Zainichi Korean whether he's in Japan or North Korea or South Korea.

I understand that she doesn't agree with woke culture, but that doesn't mean the people on the far right she has aligned herself with are her friends either. Some of them will use people like her as a shield for their own agendas. Just like people on the left push their views, individuals on the right also push their traditional and religious opinions and ostracize people who dont agree. I have also noticed that she has this attitude that Americans don't have much to complain about. Ive seen her complain about groups such as blm over their protests. Just because another country has more problems by comparison, it doesn't mean there isn't anything legitimate to be concerned about here. We will never get anything solved, with the 'shut up, people have it worse' argument.

As much as I appreciate you bringing attention to the plight of the North Koreans Asian Boss, Yeonmi's probably not the best person to go to. Her stories have had many discrepancies pointed out by other North Korean defectors and analysts on North Korea. This leads her to be an untrustworthy narrator at best and an active liar at worst. No doubt that trauma from escaping the country could cloud one's memory or give them a hazy recollection of events, but I think you should be a bit more cautious about who you have on and make sure other defectors and organizations support the person involved. I really recommend reaching out to Liberty in North Korea or The Citizens' Alliance for North Korean Human Rights for speakers; I'm sure they'd love to talk to you! They're both non-profits so I feel like they would be a much better outlet on info about North Korea and its defectors.

Her story is just as valid as anyone else’s. If her memory is clouded from trauma, that means every defector’s memory is clouded, therefore putting them in the same circumstances, thus not invalidating her story at all.

I second this. Yeonmi Park came from a wealthy family and did not go through the hardships that many impoverished defectors have to face. Her stories were fabricated for attention, and she's even admitted to this fact before. Disappointing from Asian Boss.
@GenesisJames
@GenesisJames Жыл бұрын
@@ceeIoc The thing about personal anecdotes and testimonials is that you need evidence to support them, either physically or by way of other people being able to back up your story. I don't doubt that there is SOME truth to Yeonmi's words, but when other North Koreans and North Korean analysts call you out, that leaves you with no one to back up your anecdote. 38North has an article called "When North Koreans Go South, Some Go Professional" if you want to look into it further, with sources at the bottom. I only say all this because false anecdotes actually hurt the reputations of defectors who are telling the truth. It's impossible to actually verify the validity of anything in North Korea until human rights groups are allowed into the country, but until then, the common consensus of defectors and analysts hold more weight than one individual like Yeonmi.

Yeonmi is a celebrity NK defector who has told her story many many times and they're readily available to watch on KZbin. Is it her celebrity/influencer status that she is on AB's new podcast? That I can understand. But if its to gain better insight into life in NK, don't have her repeat what she's said elsewhere, or keep it to a minimum. For example, if she left NK at age 13, how much of her knowledge about the regime structure is based on personally witnessed material and how much from her parents or other older defectors? How many 13 year olds are knowledgeable about their own country's political system. Stephen's inability to ask pointed questions is just so frustrating, he's clearly put her on a victimization pedestal where being a victim automatically places you on the moral authority high ground regarding the culture of a totally different nation, the US. Her crusade against US wokeness basically paints a very reductionist, one sided, negative, pessimistic view of US culture in the most broadest brush strokes to a captivated or captured interviewer. The way she says the US as in danger of a NK style socialism in the making dismisses about half the population and the growth of populism in both the right and the left. As an example, her assumption that all young Americans don't see through the hypocrisy of AOC shows just how ignorant she is on current events. Wokeness exists, but there's more to the US then the way Yeonmi describes and if that is what AB wants to cover, she is not the right person for the subject, or you, as the interviewer, just don't have the journalistic skill and confidence to make a good presentation to the world at large on this complex topic. So she went to a very liberal college, well there are more conservative leaning colleges too in the US. It appears like Stephen is trying too hard to protect Yeonmi's feelings because she is thin and fragile-looking and a famous victim who might break. Make no mistake, this woman is as tough as nails and knows how to market herself. Activism and trading on her past is how she makes a good living. "According to Wikipedia, Forbes, IMDb & Various Online resources, at 29 years, Yeonmi Park’s net worth is $1-5 Million." Nothing wrong with that, she does it well, but she is no moral authority figure beyond her own story, don't treat her as if she is.

As an activist, she would have these international resources. I'm sure she would have said who they were but Stephen never asks. It sounds like you're trying to start a strawman argument.

What surprised me the most was Stephen's response to some of her answers. It seemed as if he accepted a lot of her answers as facts vs viewing them through a critical lens. Which some could argue that he may need to check his inherent biases. I agree with Yeonmi Park's general opinions against North Korea and woke culture, but she definitely comes off as dishonest, especially in how she exaggerates her stories. In the past, other North Korean defectors have said that she exaggerates her stories about North Korea. Similarly, as an American, I feel somewhat the same when she discusses woke culture. Woke culture sucks, but she makes it seem like a great cultural threat that can rip apart American society, when it's more like an annoyance in my perspective. It also feels like the issue of woke culture is overrepresented online, and in real life people tend to be more open to each other. Although I think she bases her stories from real negative events, I believe she greatly exaggerates them to keep the attention of an audience to financially support herself. Despite my disliking of this particular video, I've always liked Asian Boss for featuring different people's voices, even if I disagree with them. I hope that Asian Boss can feature lesser known North Korean defectors in the future, to get a more honest lense on issues regarding North Korean and other topics.

Most college campuses have always been 'woke' even before the term was popular. They kind of have to be this way. Because once graduates enter the workforce and become part of capitalism machinery, most people change. Once people cross a threshold of tax bracket, wealth, and class, they switch sides: they no longer care about the values they hold dear back in college, they no longer care about reducing poverty, equality, access to housing, etc, some will even become part of the system that creates more inequality.

having just seen the "Woke culture at elite US universities" part, I have to say Yeonmi's take does not make sense to me. Introducing yourself with your pronouns is a minor change that can help a lot of trans people. Even as a nonbinary person who is in queer and trans spaces often, I have only encountered two sets of pronouns different from he, she, they. This "thousands of pronouns" things is overdramatic and contributes to viewing nonbinary people as somehow a problem for just existing. Also, as a math Ph.D. student, "math is racist" is definitely an oversimplification, but math is definitely taught in a way that emphasizes the work of white men, ignoring the history of mathematical and scientific developments across the world. And math has been used as a tool in pseudoscientific endeavors to "prove" racist and eugenicist ideas. Being aware of these things when learning a subject is useful, I think, so one can understand the context of things. Also, I cannot imagine she had a class full of genderfluid people, even my LGBTQ studies class had only a handful. Her complaint about white privilege is based on a very shallow understanding - it's not about feeling guilty for what your ancestors did, it's about acknowledging how the history affects the opportunity and resources available to people of different races.

Do you know how racist you sound? Just because there were famous white mathematicians does not make math racist, you're also implying that white people are somehow evil, and the things that they contribute to are bad. Please give me some examples where math was used to prove racist ideas. "ignoring the history of mathematical and scientific developments across the world" can you give me an example where a non-white mathematician's contributions were ignored or disregarded? Growing up I was never taught that math was related or credited to any race, anyone can learn/contribute to math and can benefit from it. Its often the racists who like to talk about race all the time.

It's normal not to care about pronouns just so 0.3%(trans people) of the US would feel good about themselves. I think another solution is just to toughen up and don't let someone mispronuning you affect that much. With that being said I will call you with whatever pronoun you ask me to. I just want to make one thing clear. You guys from the US think that you are center of the world and everye holds the same beliefs as you do. No we don't. To a tons of people all these focus on pronuns is weird. All these multilined description of yourself on twitter is also weird. For Yeonmi she knows her stories can sell so she is doing it for the money ... but for N Korea they do not want to destroy their country. She must expect Black people to roll over and play dead because white men are so good. She is greatful to white men, one gave her a baby!! Don't you just love how pro white Asians compare their lives to the terrorism Blacks have endured in the USA. She sounds like the spokes person for FOX news!!!

@@Vieen1810 All of this here! Is she correct that there are a lot of opportunities that exist in America? Yes. What she fails to acknowledge is that the history of this country does make it harder for certain groups of Americans to access those opportunities equally for a multitude of reasons. That doesn’t mean there are none, just that the journey is more difficult. She couldn’t have ever read uncensored detailed accounts of atrocities committed against black people during and after slavery. She’s also completely ignoring atrocities committed against other groups INCLUDING ASIANS! There are lasting consequences to how people were treated here that we are still trying to correct. The best people can do is to fight for equitable treatment were necessary while simultaneously taking hold of the opportunities that they have access to so that they can improve the lives of their families and their communities.

@@traetrae11 The state of Mississippi lynched an average of 4 Black people a day from 1884-1967. The statistic gathering persons down play the murders of blacks because they are bias white racist. The FBI and USA didn't think it was important to get more information because they have to cover for white men. The system is fixed for whites, and Asians didn't get to be the model minority until the 1960s. Native Americans and African Americans have been dealing with white supremacy longer than Asian Americans. Chinese Americans kept their heads down like most Asian and benefited from the civil rights Blacks died for!!!

@@Vieen1810 Exactly! All facts! It’s shameful how many of our ancestors died many times in brutal ways and many fighting for the rights that benefit so many other groups. The same rights that she benefits from today. And they just…glossed over…all of it. Purely shameful! Again, I question, is this what they begged for money for? This is the direction he wants to go? 🥴🥴🙅🏾‍♀️

Sorry your channel has been dying for so long to the point where you had to bring a grifter to try and get views. Hey, maybe the Daily Wire will hire you if you beg enough. Hope that works out!

What do half of these topics have to do with anything this channel is about? Why does she spend half of her time talking about ideological issues happening in the United States when no one is here to hear about these things? What was the point of this interview? You’d be better off having Jordan Peterson on here lmfao did she pay y’all to be on here? This is incredibly disappointing grifter content.

15:55 does she say her mom was sold for 65 dollars and she was sold for 20 and that she's sold for more because she's more valuable as a younger virgin? I only ask because it doesn't make sense because 65 is more than 20. Lol

Big fan of Asian Boss. Usually the videos are a great watch while having a good meal, but I could tell even before clicking that the comment section will satisfy a whole week's worth of dinners, haha.
