It’s a shame they only ever make CoD games. They’re really good at the mindfuck stuff, but the relatively grounded nature of the franchise limits how batshit they can get with it. Cold War and BO6 were pretty much the limit I’d say, with BO6 pushing it quite a bit. I’d love to see them do a standalone game someday.

Those interactions had these features and you'll be able to move and feel free to look when you're talking to the girl and choosing dialogues. But I think putting it on an open world game with tons of interactions and quests would have been a lot of work for the devs, that's why they don't add these features but I'm not sure about it!!!

It’s not so much that they turn around, but that they turn around naturally in relation to where the player is, instead of snapping the player into position for the scene, or animating the body with just one specific animation blocking while just the head tries to track the player.

@@GorrillaVision the video makes it look a lot smoother than most games I've seen do it. Most games it is a very robotic animation, which is the same no matter what direction you approach them from. Particularly impressive to me is the one where the character hops off her desk; most games will do a canned animation to get her off, then rotate her towards the player (if they don't magnetically pull the player into the optimal conversing position for the conversation.) This video, by contrast, shows the smoothest and most natural I've seen it be done, as if the animation was made bespoke for each approach.

It’s possible these aren’t truly different animations and rather the result of a blended animation system that takes the players position and modifies existing animations based on that. Stuff like this has been done going back to half life 2 but cyberpunk is a game in recent memory that uses this extensively

To be fair this isn't animation - rather inverse kinematics, it just moves the main bones - legs, torso and head to face your character, another use of this technique is when a character is standing on unlevel ground and their feet are both still touching the ground. Animating all of these movements would take ages, this is the simplest way of getting this effect. Hope this clears things up!

Are our expectations really set that low nowadays? Games such as RDR2 has literally been doing this 6 years ago in 2018 for their random NPC interactions.

No rdr2 doesn't have that, it spawns the player in and had a set path, one of the hella big things that bug me about it(still the best game ever tho)

To be fair, this is probably using a tech called "animation blending". They have the body parts isolated and then the head animation blends with the rest of the animation depending on where the player character is standing. It's not likely that "made unique animations" for each possibility. That would be really time prohibitive. Still a nice attention to detail, but this was really popularized years ago with games like Force Unleashed.

they aren't unique animations. They just have animation rigs with look at targets. They can make any skeletal rig look towards whatever target they need to by interpolating an existing animation with aim constraints

Im sorry, is this the new "revolutionary" thing they did for a Call of Duty game? Like what they did before with the fishes moving out of your way when you swim through them, this is not revolutionary. Games have been having NPCs do this for a very long time.
